Mac (rapper)
American rapper and songwriter from Louisiana
Music artist
McKinley Phipps, Jr. (born July 30, 1977), [1] better known as Mac, is an American rapper and songwriter from the 3rd Ward of New Orleans. Mac began rap as a child, releasing his debut album The Lyrical Midget at the age of 13 in 1990, under the stage name Lil Mac. Mac eventually signed to Master P’s No Limit Records and would become one of the most critically recognized artists on the label, both as a solo rapper and as a member of the super group 504 Boyz. Mac released 2 solo albums and 1 album as part of 504 Boyz on No Limit, including 1998’s Shell Shocked, which topped #11 on the US Billboard 200.
In 2001, Mac was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 30 years in prison at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Louisiana, and released on parole on June 22, 2021 after serving 20 years of his sentence. Phipps maintained his innocence throughout, and his parents campaigned to reopen the investigation into his case. [2]
Career [edit]
Mac was born McKinley Phipps, Jr. to Sheila Phipps and McKinley Phipps, Sr. in New Orleans, Louisiana, the oldest of their six children. [3] He began his music career in 1990, and by the time he was 13 years old, under the name “Lil Mac”, he had released his debut album, The Lyrical Midget. The album was one of the first commercial hip-hop albums to come out in New Orleans, and featured production from New Orleans producer Mannie Fresh.
Late 1990s: No Limit Records, Shell Shocked, and World War III [edit]
Lil Mac joined Psychoward, a New Orleans -based group consisting of 28 rappers, and the group released their debut album, *100001 *, in 1997. After rejecting an offer to move to New York and sign with Def Jam Records , Lil Mac changed his name to simple Mac and was signed by Master P’s No Limit Records. [4] He has toured without Limits throughout the U.S. and Europe, and made guest appearances on many other albums of the artist before releasing himself. She was featured in Master P’s Ghetto D, Mystikal’s Unpredictable, and Mia X’s Unlady Like, among others. The following year in 1998, Mac released his second solo album and first No Limit, Shell Shocked. The album is the most commercially successful Mac to date, reaching #11 on the Billboard 200. [5] The Mac was featured again in several other No Limit artist releases that year. In 1999, he released his second album on the label, World War III. While it’s still on the label, this release is different from the usual No Limit releases because it wasn’t exclusively produced by the Beats by the Pound production team, and only featured three guest appearances from No Limit’s main names Master P , C-Murder, and Silkk the Shocker. [6] The album didn’t go as commercially as his first No Limit release, which reached #44 on the Billboard 200. Mac’s musical style is different from many other Southern hip hop artists of this era, and he often shows of the level of lyrical complexity that has been attributed to East Coast hip hop. [7]
504 Boyz and later released [edit]
World War III will be Mac’s last album released on No Limit and his last solo album to date, as he will be sentenced to 30-years in prison for murder after 19-year-old Barron C died. Victor, Jr. at a Louisiana nightclub in 2001. In 2000, he joined the group 504 Boyz, whose name is a reference to area code 504. The group is a collective of other No Limit rappers such as Master P, Silkk the Shocker, and C – Murder. Mac joined the group for an album, Goodfellas in 2000, which went gold and reached #2 on the Billboard 200. He was featured on the group’s hit single “Wobble Wobble”, which rapped the first verse and of the choir. The song reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2007, while Mac was still serving his term in prison, No Limit released the album The Lost Tapes, which consisted of unreleased material recorded by Mac with the label.
On May 31, 2012, DJ 5150 released the Uptown Veterans ’mixtape which is a compilation of Mac’s best hits.
Legal issues [edit]On Feb. 21, 2000, Phipps was scheduled to perform at Slidell, Louisiana nightclub Club Mercedes, but a fight broke out before the show that resulted in a gunshot that hit and killed 19-year-old Barron C Victor, Jr. . to break the battle. Phipps was arrested and charged with second-degree murder of Victor. [8] He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to thirty years in prison on September 21, 2001. [9] He will serve his sentence at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Louisiana. Days into the police investigation, Thomas Williams, a man working in security that night at the club, admitted to shooting Victor after he was charged by another bottle patron of beer. Despite this, the police pursued the cases against Phipps. [10]
In December 2014, Northwestern University’s Medill Justice Project (MJP), in partnership with The Lens, published the results of a three -month investigation into Phipps ’conviction, revealing that a key witness at his trial gave his private investigator affidavit in 2013 said he was forced to identify Phipps as the shooter because of threats by investigators to charge him. [11] Following Medill’s investigation, David Lohr of The Huffington Post published the results of a four -month review of Phipps’ conviction, [12] further revealing that four other witnesses to the shooting told the publication that they too had been threatened, intimidated. or explicitly ignored by investigators. Phipps’ family has already obtained affidavits from many of the individuals in an effort to get him a new trial. [13]
On March 25, 2015, rapper Killer Mike told students at Dillard University in New Orleans that it was unacceptable for authorities to use rap lyrics in the prosecution of Phipps: “If allowed let’s say, what you see is that tool. will be used to wipe out an entire potential generation of [artists] from our community. “[14]
Phipps applied for Louisiana governor clemency in 2016, requesting that he be released from prison for time to serve. In the petition sent to the Louisiana Board of Pardons and Parole, he sought commutation for a “false conviction and excessive sentence”, as “evidence developed over the past two years” which includes, among other things, findings from the MJP investigation. [15]
On February 22, 2021, the Louisiana Board of Pardons and Parole voted for Phipps’s immediate eligibility for parole. [16] On April 8, 2021, the Louisiana governor granted Phipps clemency. According to Louisiana law, Phipps had another hearing before he was released. [17]
On June 22, 2021, Phipps was released from prison after serving twenty years. [18]
