Shane Ragland Assassinates Football Star After Getting Blacklisted From Fraternity

When Trent DiGiuro and Shane Ragland enrolled at the University of Kentucky, they were full of high hopes and ambitions.

Murders A-Z is a true crime story collection that examines in depth both little known and famous murders throughout history.

When Trent DiGiuro and Shane Ragland enrolled at the University of Kentucky, they were full of high hopes and ambitions. But when Trent was mysteriously gunned down at a house party, his murder revealed an unfathomable tale of rejection and revenge.

Oxygen’s new series Dying to Belong, which airs Sundays at 7/6c, follows Trent’s tragic murder and how the promising futures of two young men have been irreparably altered.

Growing up, Trent was obsessed with football since he was in elementary school and dreamed of playing for the University of Kentucky. He worked incredibly hard to secure his position as a top player, even making the team his freshman year. Trent a was a big guy but was known to stick up for his friends and people thought he was a big teddy bear.

One of his friends told Dying to Belong: “Trent was like the great protector of our group. Maybe because he was the biggest, maybe because he was the strongest.”

Another friend said, “If something happened and a fight broke out, he’d step in and ‘No more,’ you know — he’d end it.”

Although Trent was popular on campus and had been recruited by all fraternities, he chose not to commit himself to any particular fraternity. He just wanted to be friends with the many members of different houses. In his senior year, Trent had a starting berth on the University of Kentucky offensive line. He made the academic honors list and rented a house off campus with two friends from Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a respected fraternity with many successful alumni.

On Trent’s 21st birthday, July 17, 1994, he threw a small party at his home.

A retired detective told Dying to Belong: “It wasn’t a big wild party by any means, I mean that was 30 to 40 of his friends that got together. They drunk. That’s it already. It was his 21st birthday party. If you put it in context of what you might expect – that was pretty tame.

At the end of the evening, Trent was sitting in an easy chair on his porch with some friends, talking. Suddenly there was a loud bang and people thought it was a car backfiring. One of Trent’s friends turned to ask if he heard, but Trent was slumped in his chair and blood was spurting from his ear.

His friends called 911 and a few hours later Trent was pronounced dead. The police questioned everyone at the scene. No one saw a gun, but everyone heard the shot. Earlier, a pickup truck with children drove past the party and called some women. They were turned away, but could they have come back with a gun. The police tried to find out who the boys had been and sent out a media blitz to find them. But four unidentified men in an unidentified pickup truck weren’t a strong lead.

A reporter told Dying to Belong, “Based on where Trent was sitting, the early theory was that the shooter went around the corner of the porch, fired the gun, and then ran around the back.”

That assumed it was a pistol, but ballistics experts showed the bullet came from a rifle. The crime scene then grew dramatically to hundreds of yards from the victim. A block from the house, detectives found a small mound with two divits that could have been from a bipod, which is a small support for a rifle. The killer could have fired from there and escaped with ease.

However it happened, it appeared that Trent had been the target of an assassination attempt. After extensive interviews with classmates and friends from high school and college, police could not find any enemies with a motive for the crime.

A friend of Trent said: “We had no idea why someone could kill such a good man. And he made such an impact on all of us that it was just shocking.”

Two years later, the case had no suspect. The idea that it could have been the Katzenrufer had been dropped and the investigation had no leads. Then, in the spring of 1996, the police received a strange call from a man named David Canty. David seemed to know a lot about the case, so the police came to meet him. When they arrived, they discovered that he was obsessed with Trent’s murder.

One journalist said: “He had scribbled notes about the case on dozens of paper plates.”

David had also done his own trajectory calculations for the shot. Apparently he even had a sign saying he and Trent were twins. And that wasn’t the most suspicious part — David owned a hunting rifle of the same caliber as the bullet that killed Trent.

A retired detective said, “A .243 is not a typical hunting caliber rifle. It’s out there, but it’s not standard, and, you know, this guy had a .243. So we thought that might be a connection.”

But after taking the gun and testing it for ballistics, police determined it was a mismatch. They soon discovered that David had no relation to the victim and was oddly obsessed with the case. He was disfellowshipped, and three more years passed without a break in the case.

In June 1999, a local television station re-examined the case for a program and received a spate of calls and tips. A clue stuck. A call from a local attorney who would just give a name, nothing more.

He said, “Shane Ragland.”

Shane Ragland grew up in an extremely elite family in Kentucky. His father, Jerry Ragland, was a well-known and powerful businessman. He owned a large amount of property and leased much of it to the state government for office space. Shane had high expectations, but he was considered a bit spoiled.

Shane began school at the University of Kentucky in 1991 and his time there overlapped with Trent. Shane wanted to join the most elite sorority that was possible.

A retired detective said: “Getting into any fraternity is a competition. I mean look at so many things. There’s the GPA, of course, they look at your social status. And the fact that you get accepted will greatly improve your social standing on campus.”

But being placed in a well-connected fraternity can also be a cornerstone for a strong career. Shane set his targets on the prestigious Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Because of his father’s notoriety, Shane didn’t have to worry too much about acceptance in the fraternity and instead focused on enjoying the rush parties at SAE.

The police realized that Shane and Trent both had a connection through SAE, so they went to the fraternity and pulled out their records.

A retired detective said: “We found a list that had several promises made and Shane Ragland’s name was actually crossed out.”

Next, they spoke to a close friend of Trent’s named Matt, who joined SAE at the same time as Shane. Matt remembered Trent and Shane meeting one night in Trent’s dorm. Shane had seen a photo of a girl on the wall that was part of the fraternity girls’ calendar. Shane pointed at her and said, “I know the girl,” and then he told the room he’d slept with her.

Unfortunately for Shane, the girl in the picture happened to be the SAE President’s girlfriend. Word reached the President of the Brotherhood, and Shane was quickly removed from the liaison. Shane was angry. He certainly wasn’t used to saying no and the connection was incredibly important to him. He considered it his ticket to success. He quickly accused Matt of telling the President and threatened him.

But Trent’s stand-up personality intervened, and he told Shane, “Hey, if you want to blame someone or piss someone off, come vote for me.”

This story was far from a smoking gun, but at least it was a lead. Investigators contacted the attorney who provided the name. The name came from a woman named Aimee who was Shane’s ex-girlfriend. They had a fight one night and told each other the worst thing they had ever done. Shane had confessed to killing Trent and had gone so far as to show her the gun.

This weighed on Aimee’s conscience after they broke up, and she kept the secret for five years. But after seeing Trent’s parents on TV, she got in touch through the attorney. When the police confronted Aimee, she agreed to work with them to get Shane.

They set up a sting where Aimee would reach out to Shane and tell him she was traveling through town. Then she would wear a wire and the undercover police would be there. She needed him to confess to her again.

A retired detective said: “The bartender, you know, the waiters were actually cops. We, we made sure we have officers stationed in different locations so we can intervene if anything goes wrong. She got off her plane, he met her at the gate, um, they hugged and went on to the restaurant for a drink and for him it was just saying hello to an old friend.”

After some catching up, Aimee got on with it. Here is the transcript:

Aimee Lloyd: Something was bothering me, something you told me a long time ago, I wish you never had. And I need to know how you feel about this now.

Shane Ragland: I regret it.

Aimee Lloyd: Will you ever do anything about it? Do you want to just leave it like that? can you live with you

Shane Ragland: I don’t have a choice, do I?

Shane Ragland: Let me ask you a question, you’re not kidding me are you?

Aimee Lloyd: I’ve never told anyone.

Shane Ragland: I get this weird vibe.

Aimee Lloyd: I never told anyone.

Shane Ragland: Swear to me you won’t set me up.

Aimee quickly changed the subject. The police picked up Shane the next day. He denied knowing Trent and, while admitting to meeting Amy, denied speaking about the murder. When investigators asked him if he owned a gun, he said no. When they claimed they searched his house and found the gun, he said, “I forgot, sir.”

The gun matched the caliber of the bullet that killed Trent. He claimed he told Aimee about the murder to scare her, adding, “I’ve done a lot of drugs in my life, guys, you know, I’ve done a lot of stupid things.”

It wasn’t a confession, but it was enough to charge Shane with murder. They were arrested six years after the murder. His bail was set at $1 million, and his father immediately posted bail and hired the most expensive law firm in Kentucky.

Police hoped ballistics experts could easily match the gun to the bullet that was removed from Trent’s head. However, the ballistics expert compared six shots from the gun and could not find a match with the gun. The defense argued that the bullet that killed Trent was in too many fragments to compare to anything.

So the whole case boiled down to Aimee’s testimony about Shane’s confession.

Aimee told the courtroom, “He told me that he shot him, that he was the one who killed him, and he started telling me how he did it.”

She continued, “He’d take his gun and put it in a holdall and got on his mountain bike and he’d been riding it down the street and around and anything about walking through someone’s backyard.”

Shane’s senior attorneys wouldn’t just let a witness rule their case. They went on a mission to destroy Aimee’s credibility in any way they could. Shane’s lawyers got their hands on Aimee’s journal from her college days and portrayed her as an unsavory girl.

At trial, the defense attorney, reading her diary, said: “You were too sore for sex, so we messed around and did titfucks. Brilliant.'”

The lawyer also quoted: “Made love in the afternoon. Beautiful day. My first orgasm in solo sex.”

It was incredibly tough.

A retired detective said: “She bravely faced it and fought back. It was tremendous.”

Everyone was worried that Shane’s father would acquit him. But Shane was convicted of murder and sentenced to 30 years. However, the case was quickly appealed. Shane’s attorneys argued that prosecutors used an unreliable witness, an FBI agent who testified in another case with unreliable evidence. The case was then vacated by the Kentucky Supreme Court in 2005.

Now the public prosecutor’s office had to consider a retrial. But during the first trial, Aimee had been placed under witness protection, and she now had a new identity. She had basically given up her life to judge Shane. The case wasn’t nearly as strong without Aimee’s testimony, so prosecutors struck a plea deal with Shane’s attorneys. According to The Courier Journal, he pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to served time.

A radio host told Dying to Belong: “Manslaughter in the second degree was the deal both sides agreed to. And because Ragland had already been in prison for eight years, he was sentenced to life in prison. He ran. He got away with murder.”

Aimee, fearing for her life, went into complete hiding. Trent’s family, devastated by Shane’s reduced sentence, filed a civil lawsuit. Shane has had a few DUIs since then, and then he was paralyzed from the waist down in a 2014 car accident involving a single vehicle.

According to WKLY, Shane also recently faced court charges of domestic violence against his girlfriend and her children. He was tried by the father of the girlfriend’s children. A judge issued a domestic violence order barring Shane from being with the children for a year.
