GoFundMe to reimburse donors of woman who faked cancer

Crowdfunding site GoFundMe said it will reimburse over 120 people who donated over $10,000 to help a woman falsely claiming she has cancer, it was reported this week.

In May 2014, Jenifer Gaskin, a single mother from Eugene, Oregon, told her close friends that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

“She had a pre-chemo party,” Jill Hanns told KOIN 6.

“Everyone was positive, but there were many tears.”

Soon after, Gaskin, a board-certified nursing assistant, told her friends that the situation was getting worse.

“They found out that it was medullary thyroid cancer and that it was an incurable disease,” said Hanns.

Another friend, Elsa Dobson, tried to comfort Gaskin after she shaved her head.

Crowdfunding site GoFundMe said it will reimburse over 120 people who donated money to help a woman, Jenifer Gaskin (above), who falsely claimed she had cancer

In May 2014, Jenifer Gaskin, a single mother from Eugene, Oregon, told her close friends that she had been diagnosed with cancer. So they got together and held fundraisers. They also opened a page on crowdfunding website GoFundMe to solicit donations

Her friends were under the impression that Gaskin was undergoing chemotherapy.

“It was really heartbreaking,” Dobson said.

“She had this beautiful long blonde hair.

“Her doctor said there was nothing more she could do, and she might as well get off the chemo and live life to the fullest,” Dobson recalled.

So Hanns did what any good friend would do – opened a GoFundMe account to help Gaskin.

Other friends helped out and held fundraisers.

Soon, the GoFundMe page raised over $10,000.

Hanns and Gaskin’s other friends assumed she would use the money to take time off from work to support her family, who were “barely making ends meet.”

That’s when they realized something was wrong.

“Things were vague, contradictory, to the point of getting worse,” Hanns said.

According to Hanns and Dobson, Gaskin used the money to buy her daughter a used car and braces for her son.

“When I started getting contacts through the GoFundMe account since I was the admin, people started asking if she was sick,” Hanns said.

Hanns contacted the police, who began an investigation.

When Gaskin used the money to buy her daughter a used car and braces for her son, her friends became suspicious, according to Hanns and Dobson

When the investigation began, Gaskin remarried and moved away.

She moved to Tualatin, a suburb of Portland, 100 miles from Eugene.

The detective on the case drove to Gaskin’s new home in Tualatin and interviewed her.

She told him she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and “received oral chemotherapy.”

Gaskin also said she was treated at three hospitals for her condition – the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute, Providence Hospital in Portland and Peacehealth’s Hospital in Springfield.

The detective was able to obtain records from each of the hospitals and the state, all of which said they “could not find any records that Gaskin was a patient.”

Dobson and Hanns were heartbroken and shocked at the betrayal.

“She’ll get away with it,” Hanns said.

Any hopes that Gaskin would be prosecuted were dashed when the Lane County District Attorney said it was too expensive to bring in the more than 120 people who donated small amounts of money to GoFundMe.

“There is a constitutional right for a person accused of a crime to face their accusers in a trial,” the detective told KOIN.

“We don’t have the ability to attract people from across the country who have donated $20-$50.”

“We all loved her and cared for her, and we don’t want that to happen to anyone else because she fooled everyone,” Dobson said.

GoFundMe has announced that it will compensate all donors who contributed to Gaskin’s funds.

“We will be personally reaching out to all donors via email,” the website told KOIN.

“If there are donors who would like to contact us in advance, they can do so by submitting a donor application.”

Primary school teacher discovered a malignant lump in her breast hours after running a Breast Cancer race in memory of her friend

The weekend when she crossed the finish line of the Great Pink Run will always be remembered by Sinead Gaskin as the elementary school teacher discovered a lump in her own breast just hours after the performance.

Sinead was 37 when she discovered a suspicious lump in the shower after running the annual race in memory of her father’s partner Elizabeth, who died in 2010 just five weeks after she was diagnosed with the disease.

The Dublin primary school teacher admitted Elizabeth’s death sent a “lightning bolt” through her family and revealed her brief illness encouraged Sinead to be proactive in looking after her own care.

“Elizabeth felt unwell and complained of stomach pains and tiredness. Unfortunately, tests were taken in September 2010 and she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Our family had so little knowledge about cancer, we didn’t have first-hand experience with it until Elizabeth, but we really thought she would be fine.

“However, it had spread all over her body and she never really had a chance. She died five weeks after diagnosis, which was a real lightning bolt through our family.

“My husband David and I decided to hold the Great Pink Run in memory of Elizabeth in 2012 at Docklands. We were thinking of her and just wanted to do something to commemorate her and raise some money for breast cancer research.

“But this weekend will stay in my memory forever. After we got home from the race, I went to take a shower and with a touch of my hand discovered a lump in my chest. I’ve been more aware of my body since Elizabeth’s death, but I wasn’t as alert as I should have been,” she said.

After getting her GP’s opinion, Sinead was sent to St Vincent’s Hospital for further tests. The Wicklow-based teacher was diagnosed with breast cancer days later.

“It was one of those moments when everything falls apart. I only heard the words “You have cancer”.

“Of course I asked, ‘Am I going to die?’

“The hardest part was telling my dad. He lost my mother in 1999 and then Elizabeth’s death blew us all away. However, he was a fantastic support to me throughout the treatment and if he was upset or worried he never showed it to me,” she said.

Because Sinead’s cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, chemotherapy and radiation therapy were the prescribed course of treatment, and doctors advised that a mastectomy was also necessary to fight the disease.

Despite her illness, Sinead was determined to run the Great Pink Run after completing her treatment in April 2013, despite people believing her to be insane.

“I knew I wouldn’t be able to do the 10K, but I knew the 5K was doable. I just wanted to finish the race considering last year, it was the beginning of everything.

“My husband is super fast and did his 10km and when I got to 4km I could feel someone tap me on the back. It was David. It was so emotional to cross the finish line together. I’m so glad he came to find me. Throughout this whole experience I would have been so lost just for him. He accompanied me every step of the way.”

The couple has competed in the race every year since 2012.

The breast cancer survivor urged runners to register for the race, which takes place in September and is sponsored by Avonmore Slimline Milk.

“Had I never competed in the Great Pink Race, I wouldn’t imagine what it would have become,” she said.

Oregon Woman Probably Definitely Faked Cancer and Scammed $10k Off GoFundMe For It

So, I have to preface the following by letting you guys know that I was contacted by a tipster about this case months ago and completely dropped the ball when I reported it. My mistake. I made several attempts to reach the accused cancer faker before telling the story, hoping she would at least tell me to fuck off, but no such luck. So a station in Portland picked me up. So life is. I owe my tipster an apology: I know they have been desperate for someone to publish this story lest more generous people fall for their scam, and I have failed in that duty. I’m sorry tipster. At least it’s out there now.

Okay, with that out of the way, I want to introduce you to Jenifer Jones Gaskin, an accused cancer cheater. Unfortunately, she’s just one in a long line of complete idiots who pretended to have cancer for financial reasons. I’d say I wish them cancer, but you know what, I’m a better person than that, I wouldn’t wish that shit on my worst enemy.

KOIN reports:

Friends of a Tualatin woman who claimed to have cancer said they thought they caught her in a lie and now they feel burned. Jill Hanns and Elsa Dobson said their good friend and single mother Jenifer Gaskin was in a difficult situation while living in Eugene in May 2014. “She had a pre-chemo party,” Hanns said. “Everyone was positive but there were a lot of tears.” In addition to GoFundMe, supporters organized auctions in her favor and a “food train” to do her shopping and cook for her while she was said to be going through chemotherapy.

Gaskin had no shortage of support before the skepticism began. And yes, there was a food train. She even “liked” it.

However, over time, her followers began to doubt her story.

“Things were vague, contradictory, to the point of getting worse…it helped, it didn’t help,” Hanns said. Dobson said Gaskin made it clear that she was barely making ends meet, and that the money from all the fundraisers and GoFundMe would help her family survive. But then Gaskin started using that money for things like a used car for her daughter and braces for her son, Hanns and Dobson said. “When I started getting contacts through the GoFundMe account since I was the admin, people started asking if she was sick,” Hanns said.

At this point, the police got involved, and a thorough investigation by detectives could not find a single piece of evidence proving that Gaskin had ever received any type of cancer treatment. Despite overwhelming evidence that Gaskin faked her cancer diagnosis for financial gain, the Lane County District Attorney said that with so many small donations coming in from across the country, she believed Gaskin would not get her constitutional right to face her accuser in court them to proceed with criminal charges.

In other words, they thought they had to fly donors out to appear in the courtroom for a case against them. And so they declined to press charges, even with extraordinary police work on behalf of the detective in charge of the case.

Back to Gaskin’s alleged illness. Even her own child thought she was sick.

But it gets worse. In a series of text messages to a friend, Gaskin mentions that her children needed counseling to cope with her diagnosis.

The chief detective who investigated Gaskin’s possible fraud after his department received a tip knew that Gaskin would never be prosecuted for her crime if she admitted it herself. He said that she was very persuasive from the start, and in subsequent conversations he had with her, she only spun the situation deeper and deeper. As he followed down the rabbit hole, he realized that she would never be able to make the whole thing.

As previously mentioned, Jenifer Gaskin could not be reached for comment. Her husband Mike Jenkins told KOIN he would ask his wife to speak to them about the allegations, but has since cut off contact with the station.

GoFundMe announced they will refund donors who donated to Gaskin’s campaign.
