Eleni Zaude Gabre-Madhin (born July 12, 1964)[1] is an Ethiopian-born Swiss economist and former Chief Executive Officer of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX). She has many years of experience working in agricultural markets – particularly in sub-Saharan Africa – and has held senior positions at the World Bank, the International Food Policy Research Institute (Washington) and the United Nations (Geneva).

She is fluent in Swahili, English, Amharic and French. She graduated from the Rift Valley Academy in Kenya with the highest distinction. Career [edit]

Eleni talks to Helen Clark, head of UNDP, about Ethiopia’s commodity exchange

She was the driving force behind the development of the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX). For many years, while working as a researcher for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), she studied agricultural markets and found, like many others, that some years or regions experienced severe shortages or droughts, while others experienced surpluses or Records gave harvests. In particular, in her 2002 survey of grain traders, she found that a key factor was the lack of effective infrastructure and services needed for grain markets to function properly. Traders often did not have access to sufficient credit, market information, transportation, and other vital resources, and compliance with contracts was difficult to enforce. In 2004, she moved home from the US to lead an IFPRI program to improve Ethiopia’s agricultural policies and markets. In particular, she took on the important role of coordinating the advisory board developing the ECX. She became CEO of the new exchange in 2008, arguing that “(if) farmers can sell their crops on the open market and get a fair price, they have a much greater incentive to be productive and Ethiopia will be much less vulnerable to it Food Crises”…. and that the “ECX will enable farmers and traders to connect to the global economy, propelling Ethiopian agriculture to a whole new level.”[2]

In February 2013 she became a director of Syngenta.[3][4]

In 2013, Eleni founded Eleni LLC, a company that aims to build and invest in commodity exchanges in markets in developing countries, including Africa.

In November 2021, Canadian writer Jeff Pearce leaked a video showing Eleni attending a virtual meeting discussion with Professor Ephraim Isaac and several Western diplomats that mentioned an interim government during the Tigray War. Shortly thereafter, she was stripped of her membership of the Independent Economic Council formed to support Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic transition. On November 25, Eleni released a statement denying the allegation as “intentionally misrepresented”. Two days before the leaked video was unveiled, police forces searched her home and remained secret over alleged foul play. The incident sparked public outrage in Ethiopia and its diaspora, condemning her as a traitor.[7] The University of Gondar also withdrew her honorary doctorate.[8]

Awards[edit]

In 2010, Eleni was named Ethiopian Person of the Year for the Ethiopian Year 2002.[9] Eleni was listed as one of the 50 Women Shaping Africa in 2011.[10]

In 2012, Eleni was awarded the Yara Laurate Prize by Norwegian fertilizer company Yara International for her outstanding contributions to sustainable food production and distribution with socio-economic impact.[11] Past recipients of the award include former Prime Minister of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi. That same year, she was named one of New African Magazine’s 100 Most Influential African Women, won the African Banker Icon Award, and was invited to the G8 Summit at Camp David.[10]

In 2016 she received the Power with Purpose Award from Devex and McKinnsey.[12]

Previously, Eleni Gabre-Madhin received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gondar in Ethiopia in 2013. However, later in November 2021, Gondar University revoked Eleni Gabre-Madhin’s honorary doctorate in connection with her involved secret video meeting aimed at overthrowing Ethiopia’s democratically elected government.[13][14]

Farewell dearest Gashe Terefe, my beloved father-in-law for life, I will miss you. I have loved you as a father and grandfather to my sons for the 32 years that you have been in my life and I have been blessed with your love and loyalty all these years from Geneva to Addis Ababa. Your achievements as a brilliant telecommunications engineer and international professional are too many to list here, but since I have known you, what I have most admired about you has been your sharp intellect and your ability to reason logically, creatively and so independently . And above all, your incredible and passionate devotion to family and country. What a father, husband and grandfather you were, Abiye, how you led, taught and showed by example with humor and that special grin. Your sudden death, as healthy and alive as you were until your last evening, has shocked and saddened so many of us. It’s hard to believe it’s true. But what a way you left in style, with a peaceful smile as you turned to the next chapter, and a blessed and extraordinary farewell to three churches, including your beloved Ankober, the one of a loving community of family and friends was laid to rest. May you rest in loving peace until we meet again. @Terefe Ras work
