The Austrian, 49, grew up in Vienna but tragedy struck his family when his father died of brain cancer at a young age.
Wolf was expelled from school because his family could not afford the fees.
Before amassing a £300million fortune, he sold candles and handed out gold-faced flyers.
Now he is arguably the most powerful man in motorsport.
EARLY LIFE
Contrary to the riches he is awash in today, Wolff did not grow up with money like many others on the F1 circuit.
From the age of eight, he watched his beloved father battle brain tumors. Sadly, when Toto was a teenager, his father died and it was left to his doctor mother to raise him and his sister.
He revealed: “It was a tough upbringing; my father was very ill when he was young and he died when I was a young teenager.
“There wasn’t a lot of financial resources and when you grow up in a city where you can see it in front of you but don’t have it yourself, it’s difficult.”
Things got worse for Toto when she couldn’t afford the tuition and he was removed from private school.
“My mother raised us and she was a doctor in Vienna and there wasn’t really a financial background,” he told Essentially Sports.
“And she still managed to get us to go to a private school in Vienna because languages were important to her.”

“We were taken out of class because the tuition wasn’t paid,” he said.

“So I had to go back to class to get my bags and the humiliation of packing your bag because your tuition wasn’t paid.”
HIS FIRST BUSINESS
Wolff’s entrepreneurial skills were already evident as a young teenager.
In the 1990s he started his first business selling candles at an anti-racism protest event in Austria.
He explained: “It was a silent protest with the theme of lighting a candle and walking to protest racism.
“I figured there will be a few thousand people and they won’t have any lights or candles.”
Therefore, before the rally, Wolff bought a large number of candles to sell to demonstrators.

“The protest was supposed to start at six o’clock and by three o’clock we had only sold a few hundred,” he said. “So it was a terrible deal.”
However, things picked up speed and young Toto turned a profit.
“It has been shown that if you can create demand for your product, it sells.”
THIS WAS NOT HIS WORST JOB…
When Wolff started his own racing career at the age of 19, he had to make ends meet.
Then he took on his most embarrassing role of handing out costumed leaflets.
“The worst (job) was trying to make it as a racing driver in the pre-Christmas period in the busiest area of an Austrian city.
“I had to wear a gold cape, paint my face gold and hand out flyers for the local electronics stores.
“It was so embarrassing because people recognized me. I remember it was really bad but I pushed through, I really needed the money.”
FROM DRIVING TO BUSINESS
In 1992 Wolff took part in the Austrian Formula Ford Championship and drove in 1993 and 1994 in the Austrian and German Formula Ford.
He won the grueling Nürburgring 24 Hours, then moved into the FIA GT Championship, winning one race and the Italian GT Championship, also winning once.
In the mid to late 2000s, he juggled a racing career with a stint as a banker until he made a wise investment.
He bought shares in Williams F1 and became a member of the Board of Directors in 2009. Three years later he was appointed executive director of the design engineer.

“I became a minority shareholder in Williams and got along really well with Frank,” he said, referring to the team’s legendary owner.
“At one point we were doing well in an underfunded Williams and I got a call from a Daimler board member.”
In 2013, impressed by Wolff’s rapid rise, the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team approached him as Managing Director.
He sat down with former Daimler AG boss Wolfgang Bernhard, who asked him why their team wasn’t performing as well as it should.
Wolff joined the company as managing partner and received 30 percent of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd. Another 10 percent were held by Niki Lauda and 60 percent by the parent company.
In 2014, he increased his fortune by selling two-thirds of his stake in Williams to American businessman Brad Hollinger.
Two years later, he completely reduced his investment in Williams and sold his remaining 5 percent.
