Brenton Goodwin is a Charlotte, NC firefighter and the husband of the late CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin. He works with the Charlotte Fire Department.
His wife was killed on duty after being hit by a truck on Interstate 85 early in the morning of December 22. She had returned to work shortly after completing her maternity leave.
He shared three children with his wife. She left him a 3 year old child, a 1 year old child and a 4 month old baby.
Goodwin and her colleagues Jackson Buffington, Sean Husk and Shannon Foster assisted the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in closing a section of the freeway in northeast Charlotte near West WT Harris Boulevard.
These police officers had taken the place of previous officers who stopped the route when a vehicle carrying grain spilled a sticky substance on it at 10:30 p.m.
Chief Jennings sa the roadway had been cleaned sufficiently to restore a southbound lane around 1 a.m. Later, at 3:40 a.m., two trucks traveling south colled. These vehicles then colled with the CMPD cops.
Mia Goodwin Left Her Family Behind
The crash on Interstate 85 killed Mia Goodwin and left her family behind. Goodwin died at the scene from their injuries, while Buffington, Husk, and Foster were taken to the hospital by Medic for treatment. All three were released from the hospital later Wednesday morning.
She was mother and wife. She had three children to look after while her fireman husband had a job where the hours were just as grueling as hers.
Although she knew her job was tough, she worked diligently for the department for the past six years. Chief Jennings sa he knew she dn’t just see it as a job, she wanted to make it her career.
Mia Goodwin Will Be Honored With A Funeral On Wednesday
Mia Goodwin will be honored during a funeral Wednesday, Dec. 29 at First Baptist Church in uptown Charlotte at 301 S. Davson St. Visitation, the Charlotte Observer reported. It will start at noon.
Hundreds of CMPD officers and staff attended the funeral and mourned her death. People who lived near the church also visited her for the last time.

She died in a crash involving a tractor and trailer in North Charlotte on Wednesday morning. This is according to CMPD chief Johny Jennings.
The collision that resulted in the death of Mia Goodwin occurred at around 3:40 a.m. According to reports, two tractor-trailers and four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department vehicles collided.
It happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the W.T. Harris Blvd.
Mia Goodwin, 33, was part of CMPD’s university division. According to reports, at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Highway Patrol officers and police were called to an accident involving a semi-trailer truck.
Officer Goodwin has her colleagues work a 5-hour shift. So they came five hours later to relieve the officers on duty for the night. Another accident happened there, in which Mia Goodwin and her colleagues were hit by a tractor-trailer and the cam of a collided tractor-trailer.
Goodwin died on the spot.

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced Monday that they have paid off the mortgage on the home of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin in full.
Officer Goodwin was killed on duty on December 22, 2021 while working at an accident site.
According to a press release, she was hired by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 2015 and has served with the University City Division throughout her career. The 33-year-old mother of three had returned from maternity leave just days before her death.
Officer Goodwin’s husband, Brenton Goodwin, serves as a firefighter in Charlotte.
“This is a family of first responders, a husband and wife dedicated to serving and protecting their community. Now it’s our turn to stand up and do the same for them. It was an honor to let Brenton know that without the financial burden of a mortgage, he can stay in the home her family shares forever,” said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

And I had to stop and realized that there are no magic words that will take away this kind of pain. Nor should there be, because that is part of the process. That’s part of what we’re going through. When we lose a loved one and help us heal them, the support has been so overwhelming since last week that I’m looking back across the country, at the emails, the letters, the phone calls, the text messages, to fund it all is remarkable. And I’m sitting at a Charlotte Hornets game Monday night and there’s a moment of silence in honor of Mia. I’m going to look at the scoreboard in her picture, which is for all to see at this moment of silence. In an arena packed with thousands of people, you could hear a pin drop. After the moment of silence, the applause was loud. People stood up and applauded me. And then as I was driving to work this morning our beautiful skyline lit up blue in honor of Mia and I pulled up at a stop sign and I looked to the left and there was a cat city bus with the digital signage on the side that said rest be good in peace. So I think everyone really, really loved Mia. Not because they knew her personally, but because she represented what she was. A wife, a mother, a sister, a daughter. And yes, a hero. So Brenton to you. I know when we met yesterday there was a debate about the kids, who they look more like you or me is nothing personal. But that’s why I’m on Team Mia. I didn’t want to tell you personally, but you have the most precious little babies on earth. And I will tell you from our conversation that I know my life and legacy will live on through her because of you, that you will make sure these beautiful children know who their mother was, what she stood for. And it makes me happy to know that in my heart and I know when your daughter is going out with her in 30 years or so so you can make a call and you have plenty of armed security to escort her. So to the CMP di family and to all of us who wear this badge. Just know that right now we are challenged to continue Mia’s legacy to continue what she started. Often we get caught up in the little things in life that really don’t make a difference. Mmmmm And we worry about things we shouldn’t worry about. And when you get caught up in that trouble and when you get into that situation where you just don’t know if you can pull yourself through, think about Mia, think about what she did for this job, the sacrifices, the she brought , I often hear about words Mia wore and was compassionate and radiant when she stepped into her role on the third shift and I had a few words on that. It’s brave, resilient, heroic. And these are not just words to say that we strive for this, but this is what we are as a profession, this is what we do every day. That Mia made that ultimate sacrifice by doing something she loves and that is being a police officer and we should all applaud her for having the privilege of serving with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Okay, hello to those who don’t know me. My name is Catherine Hernandez, or officially known as Officer Acosta. First I want to thank you for everyone who is here to help me celebrate life as family and friends. I met Mia and have known her for about four years through see MPD, we worked together in the University City Department and the first time we met wasn’t good according to her. Although I never remembered our first meeting. I like to remind myself of it every day. I started the PTO phase and had trouble opening the gun safe in the room. Mia came in because she was on light duty. I realized I was having problems so she helped me. Apparently I never thanked her or even looked at her and every day since then she reminded me that we had met for the first time and that she already didn’t like me. But I still don’t think it went on like this. Everyone on the shift called her name like she was someone famous, and I still had no idea who she was. A few co-workers sometimes called me little Mia because I guess I reminded them that she reminded them of them. One evening a colleague told me when Mia comes back to work. I think you guys will become best friends and this person was right. I can’t tell you what day or what time we became friends. But we had a conversation together and clicked immediately. And since then, every call we’ve had, we’ve always walked together because of me as a bubbly personality. She immediately introduced me to the people I’m standing here with Kirsty and Antley. Mhm thanks to Mia I had the amazing experience working with all three that we were family. We leaned on each other through the hard times and laughed at the good times. Mia Kirstie and I created a group chat and called each other de tres Leches. For those who don’t know. Three Snitches is a Latin dessert made with three different types of milk. We chose it because each of us expresses diversity and uniqueness and we all love cake. So it works, as time goes by, changes happen. Mia told me she was pregnant with her second child and that I was going to a different department. Although we didn’t work together after that. Our friendship never ended later. Mia told me the news about her third child. Although she didn’t even have to tell me because I already knew it from the look on her face. I was so looking forward to her that I accompanied her throughout the pregnancy. We texted every day and spent so much time together that when we went out people thought we were sisters. I remember all the times I and I worked at the L.E.C. And she came down and we talked for hours about literally anything and everything. Her husband would meet her at exactly eight o’clock every night. And they held the phone in my face and his response was always oh that’s why you didn’t answer my texts because he knew them and I talked so much we forgot we even had husbands. Mmmmm Mia was so funny. Her laughter was contagious. Her smile was contagious. Everything about her personality was so loving and strong. She was the strongest, bravest person I have ever met. She was so respected. I adored her character. And sometimes it was even a little scared of her. But I never let her know that she devoted 110% of her time to her family because that’s what she valued the most. Not only does she have time for three children and a husband, but she has also made time for her friends. And for her work. We also recently decided to go back to school together and have started training together despite not being blood. She was my older sister. And sometimes even my mom because she took care of me when I needed her the most and she was great for that. I don’t like remembering the day we lost her because I know she wouldn’t want us to get upset. Instead, I’m talking about her amazing life because I know she hasn’t had any regrets with the Figueroa family. Mia loved you all so much. Whenever she spoke about you, I felt the connection through her words. But by the time she was done, I already knew everything about you without even having met you. She wanted you to know that she would have done anything for you and I want you to know that she was never alone and always took care of her husband and children. We only talked about you because she just had to brag to her family and rightly so for raising three wonderful children who I have come to love as much as her as Mia’s favorite phrase to say when she’s finished speaking , I say all this to thank you for giving me the floor. I know that’s how Mia would have wanted it with the people I stand by. I love you Mia, thank you for being my best friend, my rock, my sister, my mom all rolled into one. I will forever cherish our friendship and promised to fulfill all our plans we started together for you. Thanks for letting me be part of the family. And now it is time for you in heaven to rest and smile and know that your children and family will be taken care of from now on. We love you. Mia. Good evening everyone. Mia was she was my big sister. And the day I got the call, the morning I got the call, all I could do throughout the day was scream. I couldn’t do anything but think of her smile and the laughter we share, the conversations we share, and so I choose to remind her of her laughter within her smile. I want to tell a quick story and I can’t believe I’m doing this because I’m looking halfway down my chain of command in front of Lord, I hope I don’t get a negative P.R.D. But before I thank you in front of her and I bought our houses, the house she texted me during her stay and said ‘hey are you coming in? I said yes, that’s me. She was so good because I found all these houses on Zillow that I want to see. Okay, somewhere in our department and some weren’t. I said okay, let’s go. So I knew nothing about buying a house. She taught me everything and shared some information with me and my wife before we bought our house and got to work. We immediately I can’t remember who our sergeant was but we immediately ran to the sergeant and said sergeant can we ride to the man? he said yes I said fine. she said fine. We answered a few calls to pretend we were working. Thanks, hop in the car. And indeed we looked at all these houses. The biggest problem was that we were looking at a house that wasn’t in our division, which was in the North Division. We had no business in the North Division. We didn’t answer a call. There. There was no response outside of the team. There was nothing. We went straight to the North Division. It had to be 2am. I got out of the car. You know, she asked me to look at the house. I think she was just tired or exhausted. Climbed out of the car and walked to the house. There were no cars in the driveway. I took out my flashlight. I started shining my light through the window. Unbeknownst to me, I didn’t know. People posted their houses on Zillow and still lived in their houses. So I look around and see furniture TVs. I swing my flashlight to the left. I see a beautiful kitchen island decorated with food. And I said, oh Lord, someone lives in this house, and I saw a light come on upstairs and I ran. Mind you, I’m in full uniform, I hopped in the passenger seat of the squad car and said go go go go go. And she took off, we laughed all the way back to the university and I was in the Checked queue to see if there are 88 calls. Thank goodness there wasn’t, because I swear I told headquarters. We will take care of it. I know the suspect. I have a lot to do with him. So yes, mmm. Rather than thinking about her final moments on this earth, I prefer to think about the moments I had with her. The Bible says 1 Thessalonians 5 and 18 and all things give thanks. This is a bitter pill because I lost my big sister. But I put my full trust and I encourage you all to put your full trust and God I don’t care how dark the night is. At some point the sun will rise. Put your full trust in God for whatever you need. Hello, I’m Darrel Antley. I am in retirement. But I had to spend my final years with these two heroes and the University City Division on the third shift. Usually the third shift is pulled over by the newest, youngest officers, and I know it’s hard to tell, but that’s an average of 30 years older than most of these kids. I’ve taken it upon myself to make sure they have the mental and physical abilities to do this job, which is very intense and dangerous, and with that it’s like starting to take them in as your own children. I mean I know we’re not but you love him so much and you just take care of him and then just watching them grow and develop is amazing. And most of the time records would come with questions about what is absolutely expected. But I was the first and only newbie that came to me with the answers and just needed a reassurance and um it was right every time and that was the first thing I noticed about her besides that million dollar smile and personality was a sun ball and they also taught me their millennial methods because when I got into high tech there was a pager and people sent you a number and you had to drive to a payphone to call them back. But I had this little computer wrist, I think it was Apple, Apple Watch. And yes, it was like Star Trek. She sits there and gets information like breath text messages and checks on her children right there. And I mean, it just blew my mind and her language word extra. I didn’t realize that was a separate word like you’re extra. So just things like that in 30 years that I’ve just absorbed and embraced, wow, right. um, just after I actually retired, Cat and I ended up in a tough house call where they literally saved the woman’s life. And for that, unfortunately, another life had to be ended. But that was mine, the ultimate, all those heroes in this room can tell you that’s the one thing they never want to do. So I called him and checked him out just to see where their heads were and to make sure they were okay. And after that moment, I knew they would be fine out here. But for the first time I’ve been here, spouses and family members talk about it when their spouses go on patrol, how they worry about that call and they’re out there at night, and I never really embraced that until December 22nd I woke up at 8:50 am. And the first thing that got something, the message was this picture and um, I love God would never question his plan. goodbye Uh, that was like calculus. I can’t understand it. But um I’ll take it and mm hmm. She and I met and spoke on a number of occasions to discuss her ambitions and she was always so effusive when we spoke about the possibilities and the fact that she could do and be anything she wanted in this area. I could see the ambition and sheer desire in her heart to surpass herself. But she was adamant that she wanted to earn whatever position or award she received. And while she saw me as someone who gave her guidance and direction, I see her as the role model for the next generation of police officers, an officer who bravely faces the challenges of anti-police settlements with professionalism and a relentless roster to treating everyone with dignity and respect even when disrespected, an officer who remains enthusiastic and committed to the profession even as people leave to process this profession, a woman who chooses a job that few Women vote, and does so exceptionally as an officer as a wife and as a mother an officer who doesn’t take herself or the job too seriously but can find humor or just be silly long enough to put a smile on her partner’s face to get through these long hours and the many deployments and the hardships of this job Mia was that officer. She held it all together gracefully, confidently and proudly. She was a beautiful person inside and out. A true hero, as many said, upholding the nobility of our great profession.
