Mayor Suarez had many legislative accomplishments as commissioner, including implementing ShotSpotter technology in the city, a state-of-the-art shot detection system, establishing a transportation trust fund that allocates funds for current and future transit projects, and passing the Reverse Redline legislation, which Lawsuits against several major banks alleging discriminatory mortgage lending practices cleared. As a result, the city’s lawsuit reached the US Supreme Court, which ruled that cities have the right to sue banks under the Fair Housing Act for such discriminatory practices.
Mayor Suarez also chairs the Environmental Committee and is a member of the Advisory Council of the United States Conference of Mayors. In these roles, Mayor Suarez takes a leadership role in working with other mayors across the country to protect the environment and develop programs and policies that directly benefit the City of Miami. As mayor, Suarez has overseen a $400 million municipal bond initiative, sometimes referred to as the Miami Forever Bond, to combat rising sea levels and support affordable housing.[10]
In January 2019, he told the Miami Herald that his three main themes for governance were quality of life, a path to prosperity, and resilience.[11] Suarez claimed Miami benefited from his leadership with a new online permitting system and a historically low homicide rate, among other things.[11]

In 2018, Suarez voted against Republican candidate and eventual Florida governor Ron DeSantis in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election and instead voted for his Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum, for which he was criticized by fellow Republicans.
