Radio station in Detroit, Michigan

WJR (760 AM) is a commercial radio station based in Detroit, Michigan, owned by Cumulus Media, with a news/talk format. Most of WJR’s broadcast studios, along with its newsroom and offices, are located in the Fisher Building in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood. A tower atop the Fisher Building relays WJR’s audio to the transmitter site, and WJR-FM (currently WDVD) also once used this tower. Another satellite studio is located in the conservatory of the GM Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit.

WJR is a Class A Clear Channel station operating at 50,000 watts, the maximum power for AM stations in the United States, and is Michigan’s primary entry station for the Emergency Alert System. It can be heard at night over much of eastern North America. WJR’s 1934 transmitter building – which has been called “one of the finest Art Deco transmitter buildings of all time”[1] – and transmitter tower are located on Sibley Road in Riverview, Michigan.[2]

WJR programming is streamed over the Internet and simulcast on WDVD’s 96.3 FM HD2 subchannel.[3] WJR is also licensed to broadcast a hybrid digital (HD) signal.[4]

Programming [edit]

WJR airs a mix of local and nationally syndicated talk shows and local sporting events. Featured on weekdays are WJR morning personality Paul W. Smith, afternoon personality Mitch Albom, and late morning presenters Kevin Dietz and Tom Jordan. It is the Detroit outlet for Westwood One syndicated talk shows Dan Bongino, Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro and Red Eye Radio. WJR is the flagship station of the Michigan State Spartans.[5] Late nights and weekends, global and national news starts every hour on Fox News Radio.

In 2006, WJR recorded the nationally syndicated Handyman Show starring Glenn Haege, a Detroit native that previously aired on WXYT and WDFN. The Handyman Show is a nationally syndicated show originating from WJR’s own studios, as are several other weekend shows such as The C.A.R. the case is. Show and The Real Estate Insiders. Music programming on WJR has been almost completely phased out over the past two decades. As of June 2014, the only music-oriented show on the station was the Renfro Valley Gatherin’, which aired early Sunday mornings.

history [edit]

WCX [ edit ]

WJR traces its history back to May 4, 1922. Effective December 1, 1921, the United States government passed regulations formally defining “broadcast stations” for the first time. The wavelength of 360 meters (833 kHz) was intended for entertainment broadcasts, while 485 meters (619 kHz) was reserved for broadcasting official weather reports and other government reports.[6] On May 4, 1922, the Detroit Free Press newspaper was licensed using WCX’s randomly assigned callsigns to operate on both broadcast wavelengths.[7]

WCX made its debut, broadcasting from the Free Press Building the same day it was licensed. The opening broadcast included an address by Michigan Governor Alex J. Groesbeck.[8] In 1922 the number of transmitting stations increased rapidly, most sharing the single entertainment wavelength of 360 metres, necessitating increasingly complicated time-sharing schedules between stations in the same region. The Detroit News, which ran WWJ, was reluctant to suffer the “handicap” of having to give up some airtime for WCX, which the News said had decided to “break in.”[9]

In late September 1922, a second entertainment wavelength of 400 meters (750 kHz) was made available for “Class B” transmitters, which had higher powers and better equipment and programming. Both WCX and WWJ qualified to use this new wavelength on a timeshare basis, and WCX ended use of the 485 meter wavelength “Market and Weather”.[10] In early 1923, the United States continued to expand transmitter frequencies to a band of 550 to 1350 kHz. The Class B frequency of 580 kHz was designated for use by qualified stations in the “Detroit/Dearborn” area,[11] and both WCX and WWJ were assigned to that frequency.[12]

On December 8, 1924, WCX Studios opened on the new Book-Cadillac Hotel in downtown Detroit with rooftop broadcast facilities. The local poet Edgar A. Guest and the orchestra Jean Goldkette took part in the program. In January 1925, WWJ’s reallocation to 850 kHz [13] left WCX as the only station on 580 kHz.

On August 20, 1925, the Jewett Radio & Phonograph Company received a license for a new station, WJR. The company also acquired WCX and consolidated operations in Pontiac, Michigan as WJR-WCX on 580 kHz.

Goodwill station ownership[ edit ]

[16] 1927 saw the adoption of the slogan “The Goodwill Station” plus NBC Blue Network programs beginning May 9th.

On January 1, 1927, the station was acquired by George A. Richards, a local Oakland-Pontiac car dealer. Richards later also took control of WGAR in Cleveland and KMPC in Los Angeles.[18] Adopting the slogan “The Goodwill Station”, WJR began broadcasting programming on May 9, 1927 from the recently formed NBC Blue network.

In mid-1927 the common stations switched to 680 kHz.[19] On November 11, 1928, under the terms of its General Order 40, the Federal Radio Commission conducted a major AM band reorganization. This reassignment divided broadcasters into three classes, which became known as “Clear”, “Regional” and “Local”. WJR-WCX was the only North American occupant assigned to the clear channel frequency of 750 kHz.

On December 16, 1928, the station moved from the newspaper’s offices to its current location in the Fisher Building in Uptown Detroit and began identifying itself as “WJR Detroit, from the Golden Tower of the Fisher Building”. In 1929 the license was transferred to “WJR, Goodwill Station, Inc.” transmitted, and on April 22, 1929, “WCX” was officially dropped from the double call sign, with the station becoming just WJR. In 1931, WJR increased its power to 10,000 watts. The station switched network affiliations from NBC Blue to CBS on September 29, 1935, and at the same time station officials officially dedicated WJR’s new 50,000-watt station. On March 29, 1941, the station switched from 750 to 760 kHz, in accordance with the frequency reallocations of the North American Regional Broadcasting Convention.[23]

Although station owner George A. Richards bought the Detroit Lions professional football team in 1934, WJR did not begin broadcasting their games until the 1938 season.

WJR signed on to a VHF outlet at 96.3 MHz in 1948. This station was known as WJR-FM until 1982 when it became WHYT. The station is now WDVD.

Property of Capitals[ edit ]

[25] In 1939, the coverage of WJR and co-owners of WGAR in Cleveland, “The Great Stations of the Great Lakes,” was promoted to give advertisers a chance to get a “Golden Horseshoe” from listeners in the Midwest.

Richards died in May 1951 and in 1964 Goodwill Stations was sold to Capital Cities Communications, which later merged with ABC and even later with The Walt Disney Company. After the sale, WJR’s slogan became “The Great Voice of the Great Lakes”. Also in 1964, WJR acquired full rights to the Detroit Tigers baseball games with announcers Ernie Harwell and George Kell, which had begun broadcasting Tiger games in 1960. Previously, WJR had only broadcast night games with daytime games on WKMH and WJBK. The station became the flagship of the Tiger Baseball Network. In the late 1960s, WJR also became the flagship station for Detroit Red Wings hockey and Detroit Pistons basketball.

The station’s advertising campaigns and jingles included “WJR…Radio 76…Cares About Detroit”[26] and “This is America’s Finest – AM Stereo 76”. JP McCarthy regularly casually declared, “This is the biggest radio station in the world, WJR Detroit,” in a way that made it seem like the most obvious of facts.

WJR was broadcast in C-Quam AM stereo from 1982 to 2006 and received in stereo over long distances at night. WJR’s Detroit Tigers home games were broadcast in stereo, as were the Thanksgiving Day Parades.

For much of its history, WJR has served as a powerhouse in Michigan sports radio. However, in 2001, the station lost its longtime flagship rights to the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, both of which moved to CBS-owned WXYT and WXYT-FM. Then, in 2005, the station relinquished its status as the Michigan Wolverines’ flagship football and basketball station in favor of a flagship rights deal with the Michigan State Spartans. WJR had served as the flagship for the state of Michigan prior to 1976.[5]

Owned by Cumulus Media[ edit ]

WJR was sold to Citadel Broadcasting along with other ABC radio stations in January 2006. Citadel merged with Cumulus Media on September 16, 2011.[27]

WJR broadcast an HD radio signal (also on WDRQ’s HD2 digital subchannel) for about two years (2006–2008), eventually eliminating nighttime use of HD radio, and then moving it to both WJR and WDRQ-HD2 entirely one and returned to just his signal.

On November 20, 2015, WJR announced that it would take over the Detroit Lions’ flagship station in 2016, with the team switching from WXYT-FM. The live sporting events meant that regular programming might have been preempted. (During portions of the season when both Michigan football and Tiger baseball were running, Tiger baseball took precedence, and if a Michigan football game was just starting or was doing really well when Tiger baseball started, an announcement would come when the football Game faded out stating the need to make a move due to contractual obligations, otherwise the announcement would simply state that the broadcaster is leaving the Michigan game for the Tigers In any case, listeners were directed to CKLW 800 AM in the nearby for the conclusion Windsor, Ontario, referenced of the game.)

On December 18, 2020, the Detroit Lions announced that Audacy had signed WXYT-FM to become the flagship broadcaster for the 2021 NFL season after a five-year partnership.

For many years, WJR Rush Limbaugh aired in the early afternoon.

Father Coughlin broadcasts[ edit ]

Father Charles Coughlin was a local Roman Catholic priest whose controversial weekly radio sermons came largely from WJR. At the height of his popularity, Coughlin reported receiving thousands of letters a day.[31] He was also extremely polarizing, being described by one biographer as “a man of kindness and beautiful understanding”,[32] while another called him the “father of hate radio”.[33]

Father Coughlin made his radio debut on October 17, 1926, speaking on WJR through a microphone installed by the station at the altar of the Little Flower Shrine.[34] Initially addressing perceived social ills, his comments opposed prohibition, divorce, and birth control as harmful to American society. During the global economic crisis, he moved strongly in political issues. On October 5, 1930, he began a weekly program broadcast over the CBS network, broadcast by that network’s Detroit affiliate, WXYZ.[35] But a year later, CBS dumped him for being too divisive by instituting a ban on commercially sponsored religious programming. With the support of WJR station director Leo Fitzpatrick, Father Coughlin responded by starting his own network, with WJR as a key station.[36] The broadcast of “The Golden Hour” began on October 4, 1931, initially on about 20 stations. By October 16 of the next year, this had expanded to 26 stations in what was then described as “the largest independent network ever”,[37] and by early 1938 the network had grown to 58 stations.[38]

Coughlin’s fervent anti-Communism led to the perception that he supported the rise of fascism in Europe, and he was accused of being anti-Jewish.[39] Although initially supported by the local church hierarchy, his personal attacks on political figures eventually led to official restrictions and reprimands.[40][41] In 1939, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) passed a code of conduct containing restrictions on controversial commercial broadcasting,[42] which was seen as directed primarily against Coughlin, and WJR Vice President John F. Pratt argued that “the provision on controversial issues appears to be the first shackle of free speech on radio for many of us.”[43] The NAB code resulted in a loss of participating stations,[44] and this, coupled with the subject restrictions imposed by his church leaders, resulted in Coughlin ended his radio broadcasts.

WJR personalities [ edit ]

Former WJR figures included J.P. McCarthy, Jimmy Launce, Warren Pierce, Mike Whorf, Murray Gula, Joel Alexander, Jay Roberts, Charles Coughlin and many others. WJR program directors during the Capital Cities era included Joe Bacarella, Curt Hahn, and AC radio consultant Gary Berkowitz.

Rhonda Walker Surgery

Wow, as I sit here the day before returning to the job I love after a two month hiatus, I am filled with a multitude of emotions ranging from joy and excitement to a bit of fear and apprehension. Fearless is part of the motto of my charity for teenage girls, the Rhonda Walker Foundation – the F also stands for Fearless so I’m hesitant to share that. But the truth is, when you stop doing something for so long, coming back to it comes with a bit of self-doubt. Especially when you come back and do it live on TV in front of thousands of people who expect you to be exactly the same as you were two months ago. Oops!

At the same time, I’m incredibly excited to return to the career I’ve had for the last 20 years in the city I love! And let’s talk about love because I got so much of it from you all while I was on medical leave. Wow, I’m so grateful. It’s really overwhelming to know that many people, many I’ve never met in person, care about me, I mean genuinely care about my well-being enough to call and email WDIV literally daily, letters, cards, flowers , books, meals, emails, social media messages, texts, home visits and prayers for my full recovery. THANK YOU ALL!!! I love you back, I really do and if our paths ever cross I have a hug of gratitude for you – and yes I am a hugger 🙂

I still have a little more healing to do over the next few months but I’m thankful that the hard part is behind me and I am with a few exceptions such as heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. Which I’m not exactly complaining about (wink). So for my next Fitness Friday segments, I’m going to ask you to do the heavy lifting for me for a while. We’re looking to shoot some new segments, so please comment with suggestions for new gym concepts and unique approaches to training for us to check out and showcase around town.

Speaking of exercise, you know that health and fitness is a big part of my life and I’m hosting my 9th Annual Give and Get Fit Health and Fitness Event on Sunday, July 28th at 8am at the Detroit Riverfront. Please sign up for our 5k run/walk, 10k or free fitness classes and take advantage of free health screenings and great health, fitness and wellness exhibitors. It’s a family-friendly, all-ages event that benefits the kids of Detroit, and we have race medals for all ages from 1-100 and beyond. I’ll be there to give you a high five and tie it around your neck!

Finally, I am blessed to have an amazing work family that I missed like crazy every day. I can’t wait to reunite with them and get back in the saddle and delivering your morning news where I belong!

Rhonda Walker Foundation

Rhonda Walker Charity

Rhonda is also a motivational speaker and has volunteered to help with various community projects. Without hesitation, she is always available to support local charities and also spent most of her time on social causes. As the founder of the Walker Foundation, she has used her wealth for social causes.
