Best Reptiles & Frogs For 12x12x18″ Terrariums

Wondering what reptiles and amphibians you can keep in a 12″ x 12″ x 18″ glass terrarium?

Terrariums of this size are ideal for a range of small pet reptiles and amphibians. Measuring 12 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 18 inches high, these terrariums provide compact enclosure space suitable for select species up to 6 inches in overall length. Many small gecko and tree frog species can thrive in 30 x 30 x 45 cm terrariums with proper care.

How many gallons is in a 12″ x 12″ x 18″ terrarium?

A 12 x 12 x 18 inch terrarium is exactly 11.22 US gallons

A terrarium with these dimensions is best suited for tree species (tree or shrub dwellers). “Arboreal” species spend most of their time high above the ground on small branches, leaves, and in tree crevices. Most arboreal species feed or hunt on the forest floor. It is important to note that captive reptiles and amphibians need to be thermoregulated to maintain their body temperature. It is not uncommon to see a tree species on the floor of a terrarium to find a comfortable temperature range.

This is another reason why large species should not be kept in a terrarium this size – it just doesn’t allow them to thermoregulate.

12 x 12 x 18 inch glass terrariums from Exo Terra, Zoo Med and Repti Zoo (the cheapest 12 x 12 x 18 inch tank on the market) all have very similar features including locking front doors, top ventilation and a sealed one Soil that can hold water, perfect for bioactive terrariums with drainage layers. The 12″ x 12″ x 18″ Exo Terra and Zoo Med tanks both feature removable strainer covers that make routine maintenance a breeze.

Some common arboreal reptiles popularly kept in 12x12x18 inch tanks are: crested geckos, gargoyle geckos, small day geckos, and sorrow geckos.

Common amphibian species that do well in 12x12x18 inch terrariums include: red-eyed tree frogs, black-eyed tree frogs, Amazonian milk frogs, and glass tree frogs.

Gecko species for 12 x 12 x 18 inch terrariums

Warning: This terrarium size is not intended for terrestrial reptile species or species that will quickly outgrow a tank of this size. Avoid these small tree tanks for species such as: leopard geckos, bearded dragons, ball pythons, iguanas, corn snakes, etc. of all ages and sizes.

Keep in mind that you should only house 1 gecko in such a small tank, with the exception of sorrowing geckos or breeding pairs of some of the gecko species listed below.

crested geckos

Crested geckos are a prime candidate species for 12″ x 12″ x 18″ enclosures. Young fry from 8 weeks of age to fully grown adults will do extremely well in tanks of this size. Some individual geckos might be noticeably more active than others. If you observe your gecko behaving in a fleeting manner or walking all over its entire enclosure, consider upgrading to a larger enclosure such as an 18″ x 18″ x 24″ Exo Terra glass terrarium to provide more space for where the gecko will reside can find shelter that could potentially improve the fugitive behavior over time.

One benefit of housing an adult crested gecko in a tank this size is that it can improve the feeding response, especially for picky eaters. Offering crested gecko diet in a large terrarium might intimidate some crested geckos, resulting in reduced feeding behavior.

Mourning Geckos

Sorrowing geckos (Lepidodactylus lugubris) are small smooth-scaled geckos that grow to only about 3.5 inches as fully grown adults. This species feeds on very small live insects such as pinhead crickets and fruit flies, but also thrives on easy-to-prepare crested gecko diets. Sorrow geckos are parthenogenic, meaning they are all female and produce fertile eggs themselves without mating males to females. Within a few months, you’ll likely have a growing population of grieving geckos! A colony of around 6-8 adults would be the maximum for the 12x12x18 inch terrarium class.

Gargoyle Geckos

I’m hesitant to include this species as 12″ x 12″ x 18″ is definitely too small for adult gargoyle geckos. This species takes around 3 years, sometimes longer, to reach full maturity, so rearing a gargoyle in this tank until it reaches around 30 grams is perfectly fine. The care requirements are essentially the same as for crested geckos. One thing worth noting is that anyone who has kept both Crested Geckos and Gargoyles can tell you: Gargoyles are a type of slob. They have been known to go through their gecko diet and track them all over their tank. Upgrading to a larger terrarium is a must once your gecko reaches the appropriate size and age. Gargoyles, on the other hand, are generally very docile and take handling very well – in some cases even more than crested!

Chahoua Geckos

Similar to gargoyles, Chahoua geckos take a few years to reach adulthood and should be transferred to a larger habitat once they reach around 30 grams. This species has essentially the same requirements as Crested Geckos and Gargoyle Geckos. Some Chahouas grow slightly longer than their crested cousins. The Pine Island locale can reach an overall length of up to 11 inches. A tank of this size should be suitable for a young Chahoua juvenile to grow in for around 2 years. This gives you plenty of time to prep this 18 x 18 x 24 inch tank!

Eurydactylodes vieillardi & agricolae

Eurydactylodes are native to New Caledonia and have similar requirements to crested, gargoyle, and chahoua geckos. Eurys are slender-bodied arboreal species, reaching about 5 inches as adults. These nocturnal species can be housed as single adults or in breeding pairs in a 12″ x 12″ x 18″ terrarium with thin vines and plenty of leaf cover. This is another simple species of gecko, feeding mainly on gecko diet and small foraging crickets.

Yellow-headed day gecko (Phelsuma klemmeri)

Day geckos, as you might have guessed, are diurnal (active during the day). P. klemmeri is a small, brilliantly colored day gecko that you can see actively feeding and roaming around during the day. 12x12x18″ terrariums are the minimum size for this species. A simple artificial plant setup and a sun lamp that will keep temperatures at the high levels into the mid 80’s is crucial for this species. Avoid live plants with day gecko species in tanks of this size as it could be a real challenge to prune plants without letting your stunning gecko emerge. This species is incredibly fast which makes it more of a show pet.Adults reach 4″ in total length and can be grown singly or in be housed to a breeding pair in a tank of this size Feeding live insects several times a week and feeding crested geckos about 2 times a week is critical to the longevity of P. klemmeri in captivity.

Strophurus geckos

These species are becoming increasingly popular with experienced gecko keepers. Their care requirements are slightly higher than crested geckos and other New Caledonian gecko species, but a 12″ x 12″ x 18″ terrarium is a great starting point for a fully grown adult gecko. These geckos are generally docile but remain strict show animals due to their fragile structure. Strophurus geckos are nocturnal species native to Australia with moderate to high heat requirements that feed on live insects. A 12 x 12 x 18 inch terrarium with thin branches, sparse foliage and a desert scene is drastically different from the previously mentioned species. Definitely a group of species worth considering if you’re looking for a completely different species of gecko to add to your collection.

Tree frogs for 12x12x18″ terrariums

Red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas)

Red-Eye Tree Frogs

Amazon Milk Frogs

Black-eyed Tree Frogs (Morelet’s Tree Frog)

These species are all sociable animals and should be kept in pairs in 30 x 30 x 45 cm terrariums. If there are more than 2 frogs in a tank, it may be too easy for a dominant frog to eat more than the other. Likewise, these species should not be kept together, but in pairs of the same species of similar size.

These tree frogs prefer to sleep on smooth leaves of artificial or live plants during the day. A bromeliad would be a great centerpiece that your frogs are likely to congregate on frequently.

As these are tropical species, using a small heating element such as the Zoo Med Nano Basking Lamp or Zoo Med Nano Ceramic Heat Emitter can easily meet the heating needs in an aquarium of this size. Use lower wattage lamps or ceramic heaters to avoid overheating.

Tip: A thermostat is required for every ceramic radiant heater. This regulates the power and automatically shuts off the heating element when temperatures reach a certain threshold.

Exo Terra glass terrarium 12x12x18

We love this terrarium! The solid glass floor allows you to set up a naturally planted terrarium or install water features. This Exo Terra reptile terrarium is perfect for tropical species that require moderate to high humidity.

The Exo Terra glass terrarium was designed by the geekiest reptile freaks in Europe. One of the best things they came up with is the unique design of the front doors, which are easy to open and facilitate grooming, cleaning and feeding one by one. The doors lock to keep your reptile inside where it’s supposed to be, and there’s an available lock to keep the crooks and unwanted people out. The design of the top of the screen is perfect. It pops out easily if you need access from above and allows for very respectable penetration of UVB rays from your lamps.
