Ex-Wolverine LaMarr Woodley, not retired, has no plans for NFL return

By Chris Nelson

Specially for the Detroit Free Press

LaMarr Woodley has no plans for an NFL return.

The former Michigan star and Super Bowl-winning linebacker is enjoying life too much.

Woodley, an NFL free agent, never submitted his retirement papers to the league but last played with Arizona in 2015.

The Saginaw native and former College All-America has quashed talk of a comeback.

“If you’re a year out, I guess you’re retired,” Woodley joked at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday. “I’m not trying to go back. I enjoy myself, enjoy family life, do great things in the community. I hadn’t even thought of that.”

Woodley, along with other local celebrities, played at the 15th annual Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan Foundation wheelchair basketball game before the Oakland men faced Youngstown State in the Horizon League tournament.

Saturday’s event, which was attended by local athletes as well as radio and television personalities, raised money for RIM’s wheelchair sports program. Members of the award-winning Detroit Diehards wheelchair basketball team played with the celebrities.

Woodley scored nine points and earned MVP by helping the Motor City Rollers beat the Detroit Jam 23-10. Former University of Detroit and Pistons standout John Long coached the winning team, and former UDM and NBA player Earl Cureton coached the jam.

“This is my first time standing on a basketball court since college,” Woodley said. “My teammates saw me openly, threw the ball to me and I just let it go. I was like Steph Curry out there.”

Events like the wheelchair game make it difficult for Woodley to contemplate the grueling task of an NFL return. He’s preparing to begin the second season of his TV show — “Tackle my Ride” on the NFL Network — and he’s doing a local radio show on 910 (AM) every Tuesday from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

“I’m still learning about Detroit because I’m from Saginaw,” said Woodley, who now resides in Novi. “I’m down here trying to learn more about Detroit and do more things in the community. From what I’ve seen, great things have come back to Detroit.”

Woodley won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009 and secured a Pro Bowl berth the next season. He ended his nine-year professional career with 314 tackles, 58 sacks and five interceptions.

“The NFL experience is what you make of it,” he said. “Fortunately, I was on a good team with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was a family atmosphere, a family organization. When you play for a great city like Pittsburgh, you have no choice but to enjoy it.”

Devin Gardner, a former Inkster High School and Michigan quarterback, and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester Adams), a former Michigan and Olympian swimmer, were among the other celebrities who attended the wheelchair event.

“It’s always great to help out in any way you can, especially in the heart of the city you grew up in,” said Gardner, who now lives in Southfield and is training for a possible NFL comeback. “It was a great cause and I’m looking forward to taking part even if we lost.”

With two sacks in both the Divisional Round and the Conference Championship, Woodley became the first player in NFL history to record three consecutive multi-sack playoff games leading up to the Steelers’ 31-29 loss to Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild card round of the playoffs regressed in 2008. In Super Bowl XLIII, Woodley extended that streak to four games when he sacked Kurt Warner twice and sacked Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner with 5 seconds left in the game to fumble at the end of the game forced to ensure victory.

Philanthropy[ edit ]

Since the beginning of his NFL career, Woodley has provided significant amounts of free supplies to students in his hometown of Saginaw.[18] In January 2012, he donated 100 hooded sweatshirts to the Saginaw High Band before their Sugar Bowl halftime performance between Michigan and Virginia Tech.[19] Later that year he established a foundation to coordinate his charitable activities.[18] Shortly after the foundation was established, Woodley found that budget cuts in the 2012-13 school year required the Saginaw City School District to implement a $75 per student high school athletics entry fee. Through his endowment, he donated $60,000 to cover tuition for all the athletes in the county – at Saginaw High, Arthur Hill High School, and the city’s junior high and middle schools.[18] In 2018, Woodley opened Woodley Leadership Academy, a tuition-free K-8 charter school in Saginaw.

Building leaders motivation behind LaMarr Woodley’s new school

Saginaw — Former Michigan All-American defensive end and NFL linebacker LaMarr Woodley made a career out of bringing ball carriers to school with punishing tackles.

So maybe opening a charter school doesn’t seem so far-fetched.

On Thursday, the stone-carved, 6-foot-2, 265-pound schoolmaster received members of the media, surrounded by his mother Janice Staples and father Terry Woodley, in the gymnasium of Woodley Leadership Academy’s future home, the former St. Stephen Catholic School, Malzahnstr . 1300. The rectory closed in 2014 after merging with St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Woodley Leadership Academy will open in the fall for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The tuition-free charter school is accredited by Eastern Michigan University for grades through 8th, but Woodley plans to start K-5 and add a grade level each year.

The move to create a tuition-free charter academy fits the profile of an athlete who has never left his hometown in the rearview mirror.

Woodley, who retired in 2015 after a nine-year, 110-game Pro Bowl career, 94 of them with the Steelers, has frequently answered calls to Saginaw’s schoolchildren.

In 2012, he received a $60,000 bill through his foundation for district student attendance fees. Other philanthropic endeavors have included donating sweatshirts to members of the Saginaw High Band for the 2012 Sugar Bowl involving his alma mater Michigan and Virginia Tech, giving out backpacks, free lunches and haircuts.

“When I was younger, I always wished that people would come back and give back to the community,” said Woodley, who was a member of Saginaw High’s Division 2 football team in 2000, along with former standout Charles Rogers Michigan State and wide receiver for the Lions. “I wish we had seen some of the successful people come back.

“I said if I ever had a chance I would come back.”

Education has always been at the heart of this community effort.

Woodley connected with Bruce Henson, Charter Manager of ACCEL Schools, whom he heard about after Henson tried unsuccessfully to buy the closed Saginaw Buena Vista High to start a professional school.

ACCEL Schools, a subsidiary of Pansophic Learning, operates more than 40 charter academies, most of which are located in Ohio. The nonprofit Charter School Management Outfit operates Inkster Preparatory Academy and Global Preparatory Academy in Roseville.

Henson was carried away by Woodley’s enthusiasm.

“He’s community-oriented and really cares about the kids,” said Henson, ACCEL’s national director of school partnerships. “He wants this child to have the best possible chance of an education.

“LaMarr doesn’t make any money from it. He will commit. He will be at school. He will be involved in some of the after school programs.

“It’s going to be a little bit different than the average, ‘I want my name out there…’ He’s not that type of person.”

As the name suggests, Woodley Leadership Academy will focus on developing these qualities of direction in students. Students are required to wear uniforms and suits on certain days of the week.

Before and after school programs cover reading, financial literacy/banking, foreign languages, nutrition, drama and entrepreneurship.

The hallway will be adorned with mirrors in which students can reflect themselves while absorbing inspirational messages.

“I feel like kids sometimes don’t believe they’re leaders,” Woodley said. “We want to create more leaders and let everyone know they are leaders. The more people are leaders, the more confidence they will have. They will believe you are the leader. You will start leading. Everyone will start following.”

During a tour of the immaculately maintained building, Woodley announced that St. Stephen’s green and gold colors and titanic mascot will remain. The academy will lease the school from the Saginaw Catholic Diocese.

Woodley plans to hold his 11th annual soccer camp at the school.

“There’s a lot of people who went to this school,” Woodley said. “Why erase their history and tradition?”
