Nick Tennant’s Limitless Curiosity Helped Build the Extraction Sector

Technological innovation has played a major role in almost every sector of the cannabis industry over the last few decades, but it’s hard to imagine any market segment benefitting more than extraction and oil. The appearance of the first vaporizer pens in 2010 changed the game while making cannabis more social and opening up a huge new product category.

A sea change was happening behind the scenes as a new generation of entrepreneurs built high-tech machines that could isolate the chemical components of the plant and refine them into any number of new high-end products. While “honey oil” and other crude versions of extracts have been around for many years – produced in barns and garages with varying results and blasts – the extraction industry took a huge leap forward when turnkey extraction machines started rolling off the shelf.

Nick Tennant, co-founder and chief technology officer at Precision Extraction Solutions, closely watched early efforts in extraction technology and was fascinated by the process. He was sure that oils and extracts would be a big piece of the cannabis pie in the future, so he did what any aspiring entrepreneur would do: he collected a bunch of scientific journals and machine parts and started building an extraction facility at home.

One might expect the CTO for one of the most tech- and science-intensive sectors in the industry to be an engineering or physics guru with a few geeky degrees under his belt. Tennant’s assumption is wrong. He never finished college and studied science only because of his keen interest in cannabis cultivation and extraction technologies.

He now has extensive knowledge and experience in everything from cannabis and hemp extraction to code regulation, laboratory design, extract product and process development and extraction equipment construction. In his no-nonsense, folksy style, he happily explains the concepts behind the magic to a new generation of entrepreneurs who will power the next generation of craft cannabis and industrial hemp companies… and use Precision’s machines to power their dreams.

humble beginnings

Tennant grew up in a working-class family in suburban Detroit, where he attended a private school. Most of the other students were wealthy and privileged offspring, and the dynamic influenced his worldview early on.

“I felt like all these kids were given their all, and it built a little chip on my shoulder,” he said. “Ultimately, I think that means just having this wild, wild urge to be an entrepreneur. And then I think it got even worse when I started my paint restoration and auto detailing business. I was constantly exposed to these people who seemed like they did what they wanted all day and they all drove $100,000 cars. I said, ‘How do these people do it? There has to be some mechanism to make tremendous amounts of money and still have your freedom.” Since then, I’ve learned that money really is the storehouse of your economic value, and it’s like a three-legged stool: your money, your time, and Freedom. You sacrifice one to have the other two.”

Visits to friends and family in California and Colorado introduced a young Tennant to the burgeoning cannabis industry. One semester of college convinced him that higher education wouldn’t help him achieve his goals, but cannabis…that was intriguing. “I just started learning about the culture and where it’s going, the potential and stuff like that,” he said. “When Michigan passed medicine legislation in 2008, I was the forty-fourth person to receive a license.”

I’ve always been the kind of person I can teach myself when it’s technically relevant.

From 2006 to 2010, Tennant familiarized himself with the cannabis industry and became an accomplished breeder, manufacturing edibles, founding dispensaries, consulting with startups and eventually founding his own cannabis school to share his knowledge with other aspiring cannabis entrepreneurs. “Ultimately, through my basic or tribal knowledge of cannabis, I witnessed the birth of extraction,” he said. “Back then, people didn’t even know how to extract properly. They just blew cans of butane through a pipe, and that was really the pinnacle of technology at the time.”

Until 2012, Tennant focused solely on extraction, believing that this sector represented the future of cannabis. Finally, there were parallels in other extraction industries, including botanicals and food flavorings, which have been multibillion-dollar industries for decades.

“I didn’t have any experience with technology, but I’ve always been the kind of person who can teach myself when it’s relevant,” he said. “And I can sit there and concentrate for ten or twelve hours at a time, completely non-stop, and just soak it up like a sponge. But if it’s something that’s not relevant to me and my life, then I don’t have the attention span. I would just rather do something else.”

Tennant said he was determined to design a new generation of extraction machines from scratch, so he holed himself up in his house for about six months and delved into the science and equipment behind the process: pressure vessels, assembly processes, temperature holding times, the molecular structure of cannabis and how solvents interact with the plant. “I learned everything I could about how the extraction of these molecules would take place and then built my first prototype,” he said. “We took it to a client that we were advising at the time and he made oil out of it and he’s like, ‘Holy shit dude. You’re not taking this thing home with you. Here’s 15 Gs [$15,000].’ So he kept [the machine] and I couldn’t get it back.”

After his initial success, Tennant built prototype after prototype until he was satisfied with the industrial design and the quality of the oil the machine was producing. He then reached out to his business partner and Precision co-founder, Marc Beginin, and they officially launched the startup. “We ended up making a million dollars in sales in the first ninety days,” Tennant said. “We really knew then that it was going to be something bigger than we thought. I think we made about $4 million in our first year, which would have been 2015, and we doubled it a year after that. I think we liked 70 percent growth the year after that. And then we achieved growth of 180 percent the following year.”

Precision currently has annual sales of approximately $40 million and is one of the largest and most successful manufacturers of extraction equipment in the world. It’s difficult to estimate the company’s share of the extraction hardware market, but Tennant believes Precision owns between 10 percent and 15 percent.

Throughout his career, Tennant said one of the keys to his success has been his willingness to take risks. He understands the risk-reward factor in a dynamic, fast-moving and competitive industry. He doesn’t shy away from a challenge in his business or personal life, and to underscore this, he gave a hair-raising – and humorous – example.

Like any other self-respecting Detroit native, Tennant is a fan of fine automobiles – particularly those that go exceptionally fast. One of the first exotic cars he bought was a McLaren MP4, which is made out of carbon fiber parts and has a top speed of around 215 mph. In an episode of the Netflix series Fastest Car, Tennant and his McLaren competed in a high-speed deathmatch against other car enthusiasts who own specially charged American vehicles. He said he wasn’t overly concerned about the result (he won) but was concerned one of the other cars might damage his during the spectacle.

When he’s not racing, poking fun at cannabinoid research, or developing a new extraction process, Tennant is enjoying life’s simple pleasures. “I love to travel and explore new places, and I certainly enjoy meeting new people and having intellectually stimulating conversations with people who really understand holistic health,” he said. “I love to visit an organic orchard on a Sunday afternoon and buy organic produce. This is really exciting to me, strange as it may sound. It’s not as exciting as a great trip or anything, but I’m a typical guy, so, you know, cars, airplanes, all those things’ take up the moments when he’s not working.

The bad luck man

Although his official title is CTO, it’s evident that Tennant is involved in much more than just the technical side of the business. He is involved in everything from business development and research to marketing and sales. A natural pitchman, he appears in dozens of videos posted to YouTube, Precision’s homepage, and other media sites. In one of these, he stands in front of a giant industrial extraction machine located outside of a partner facility in Dayton, Ohio. Sounding like a cross between a Ferrari dealership and a John Deere tractor salesman, he matter-of-factly guides his audience through each step of the extraction process.

In another video, entitled “Extraction Explained: How to Make Cannabis Extracts,” Tennant wears a white lab coat and explains complex manufacturing processes and scientific concepts in a way that any layperson can understand. The video, released less than a year ago, has been viewed more than 350,000 times. In a way, he seems just as interested in helping other entrepreneurs break into the cannabis industry as he is in starting his own business. For someone fully immersed in the picks-and-shovels aspects of the industry, this could be a winning strategy.

One of the things that sets Precision apart from its competitors, according to Tennant, is that the company offers end-to-end solutions and services. Whether it’s for a boutique, a craft brand processing five to ten pounds a day, or a large-scale industrial processor processing 500,000 pounds, Precision has the machine for the job.

“Compared to our competition, it’s a tremendous value proposition that you can literally bring us a piece of dirt and we have in-house architects, engineers and designers who can design your entire facility and your entire building,” said Tennant. “We can handle construction management and ensure your project is completed on time and on budget.” After the equipment is commissioned, Precision provides training and support so that “you end up going home with a manufacturing facility that makes a product you can stand behind and you have a fully trained staff. There is no other mining company in the world that can do that.”

In addition to its standard machines, Precision also builds custom solutions that use a variety of solvents – ethanol, hydrocarbons, liquid nitrogen – as well as solvent-free and multi-solvent systems. When the team develops new exhaust system designs, they have the advantage of having easy access to the knowledge, experience, and expertise of the people who built Detroit’s auto industry over the past 100 years.

“If we need to get something done, we can get in the car and drive down the road or drive a few hours and be in front of our production line, so that’s a huge advantage for us,” Tennant said. “Ultimately, it means getting products to market very, very quickly. In a dynamic market that is constantly changing, this is absolutely necessary.”

Describing the growth path and opportunities for his company, Tennant sees a world of opportunity, the first of which is riding the wave of an expanding market in which Precision is currently growing at a 40 percent annual rate. Another concerns mergers and acquisitions, particularly in the wake of a pandemic that has impacted both small and large companies in the industry. And then there’s Europe, where he sees 750 million people and a cannabis industry infrastructure that’s slowly but surely coming together.

“You can imagine all of these things can be done, and it’s about resource and capital constraints,” he said. “We can’t hunt all the rabbits if we don’t have enough hunters and the infrastructure to hunt all the rabbits, so to speak. But we believe that the growth potential for our businesses is really very high. I wouldn’t say limitless, but it’s a very attractive investment profile.”

share the wealth

Scientific research is a critical part of Precision’s growth strategy, and Tennant is passionate about research to better understand the cannabis plant and all of its chemical components and interactions. “Right now we’re working to fully isolate different cannabinoids and compounds and find the best dosage for each,” he explained. “I personally do a lot of research on this topic, and it surrounds Precision’s central theme: how to use plants and the magic of plants to better stabilize humanity and human health in the future.”

One of the most promising new targets for Precision’s machines could well be pharmaceutical companies that have been doing their own research on cannabis in secret and are ready to start manufacturing if and when weed is off the Controlled Substances Act’s Schedule I list is deleted. The company conducts more than 150 clinical studies with different forms of cannabinoids. “The benchmark for pharma compliance is significantly higher than what is currently being standardized in the [cannabis] industry, so we’re actively striving for that,” he said. “It takes some money for that, so it’s just a matter of getting there sooner rather than later.

“You have every single big pharmaceutical company that looks at the industry and the challenges are diverse, but the facility is so diverse,” he added. “They have now identified more than 100 cannabinoids, and truly each of these cannabinoids has a unique effect on the human body and how it binds to the endocannabinoid system; how it interacts with your central nervous system. It ultimately leads to a different result depending on what combinations of cannabinoids you are administering. And with that comes the potential to truly treat, heal and alleviate a vast array of human diseases, disorders, pain and suffering.”

Since the beginning of his cannabis journey, Tennant has been a collaborator, consultant, and teacher, openly sharing his knowledge of planting and extraction techniques with almost anyone who will listen. Tennant says it’s important for entrepreneurs, no matter what business they have their eyes on, to be nimble and committed to education and research.

“Keep learning,” he advised. “Nothing is ever static, and success is often directly related to your ability to adapt and change. Those who don’t adapt will become irrelevant or run over, or someone will just overtake them.”

Although Tennant has built a successful company, he said he made many mistakes along the way. Many of these had to do with hiring and staffing decisions.

“If I had to give one piece of advice, I would say learn how to hire and surround yourself with the brightest and best people who are extremely successful. Whether it’s your marketing team or someone for your operations, business strategy or finances, you absolutely need to have the best people,” he said. “But I think the best people represent one in ten who come in for an interview. So if you want a company that reaches the pinnacle of success, good enough isn’t good enough.

“The other thing I recommend is that you always bring in someone who has experience with what you’re trying to do,” he continued. “Do you have someone who is an experienced consultant, someone who has been doing this for twenty to thirty years. Don’t try to do it alone. Hire someone who really has in-depth expertise.”

When Tennant discusses the future of the extraction sector, he points to the fact that cannabis is expected to be a $130 billion retail market by 2028, and several sectors within the industry are just getting started.

“That’s bloody big, isn’t it?” he said of the projection. “Ultimately, we see a very long trajectory for this business and we have more than a decade before we even begin to think about or consider market saturation.

“I think the future state of cannabis looks like crafting versus large production distillates and large production pen with reconstituted terpenes. Then I see that a whole pharmaceutical niche is emerging and moving very strongly towards GMP [good manufacturing processes]. Even in the medical markets, I see more production regulation, more traceability, more standardization, and more hurdles to overcome in order to come to standardized cannabis extract manufacturing.

“And I think our philosophy surrounds that with our technologies and the types of things that we [research] and develop,” he added. “They all surround these kinds of theses.”
