FOOTBALL N.F.L. TRAINING CAMP ROUNDUP; Redskins Sign Gardner To a Five-Year Contract

Washington Redskins first-round draft pick Rod Gardner yesterday agreed to a five-year, $7.7 million contract. Gardner, a former Clemson receiver who was the 15th overall pick in the draft, was due to arrive at training camp in Carlisle, Pa. last night to sign the deal before reporting for practice today, ending a four-day holdout.

The deal reportedly includes a $5.1 million signing bonus and up to $3 million in escalators and incentives, which could bring the total value to about $10.7 million. The Redskins would have an option on the fifth year of the deal.

The basic structure of the contract had been in place for days, but the Redskins and Gardner haggled over the incentive package until yesterday’s face-to-face negotiations.
