Garrett McNamara

American big wave surfer

Garrett ‘GMAC’ McNamara (born August 10, 1967) is an American professional big wave surfer and extreme waterman known for breaking the world record for the largest wave ever surfed in Nazaré, Portugal overcoming a monstrous barrel at Jaws and riding a tsunami on calving glaciers in Alaska.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

McNamara was born on August 10, 1967 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and spent much of his childhood in Berkeley, California. McNamara has Irish ancestry. At Berkeley, McNamara and his younger brother Liam were known among friends for being fairly fearless and shaking off the pains of childhood rough play, suggesting his later ability to face dangers while surfing.[2] In his early childhood, his mother took the family to Central America, where she became a victim of domestic violence and occasionally abandoned him and his brother; A Guatemalan farmer once tried to adopt him, but his mother returned and took the family back to America.[3] He then returned to Berkeley, where his mother left him with his biological father; McNamara lived with him for several years until his mother returned with a new partner, who moved the family to the North Shore of Hawaii in 1978.[3] At age 11, McNamara followed in his younger brother’s footsteps and began surfing Sunset, Waimea and the Outer Reefs in search of huge waves. At seventeen he entered and placed in the prestigious Hawaiian Triple Crown Series and began attracting major sponsorships from major Japanese brands. Over the next ten years, both brothers joined the competitive circuit, traveled, and became fluent in Japanese.

Tow surfing caught on in the surfing community in the early 1990s and McNamara was one of the first to join the movement. Boats and personal watercraft enabled surfers to chase and catch huge waves thought impossible, beyond the limits of bare-handed surfers. McNamara welcomed and craved the challenge of finding the world’s biggest waves, which would immediately become his dream and life’s work.

Career [edit]

After a year of training, McNamara and his tow-in partner Rodrigo Resende won the $70,000 prize pool at the 2002 Tow Surfing World Cup in Maui at Jaws. Later that year he posed for the covers of major surf magazines around the world after being photographed in a dramatic barrel shot off the coast of Teahupo’o in Tahiti. In 2003 he rode one of his most famous waves. McNamara was in Jaws again, catching a wave with a 20 ft (6.1 m) run that bystanders thought he had been crushed by the lip of the wave. The wave spat and he escaped death, reappearing to the surprise and amazement of all onlookers, including himself.

The frontiers of big wave surfing were pushed again in the summer of 2007 by McNamara and his partner Keali’i Mamala when they searched for a tsunami formed by 300-foot (91 m) calving glaciers in south-central Alaska. A feature film was made documenting their experiences.[5]

In January 2016, McNamara suffered a severe wipeout on a 50-foot wave at Mavericks in California, causing him to bounce out of the water three times before being swallowed by the monster-sized wave. Rescuers on jet skis eventually got McNamara to safety, and he suffered a dislocated shoulder and a fractured upper arm that required surgery.[6] Video of McNamara’s obliteration went viral, with local surfers saying it was one of the worst obliterations on video.[7]

world record[edit]

In November 2011, storm chasing and wave chasing paid dividends for McNamara when he was inducted into the Guinness World Records. He caught a 24m wave in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal after being towed into the wave by a jet ski on a 6’0 Dick Brewer tow board. His record beat the previous world record by over a foot,[8] but the premature announcement (by others, not McNamara) proved a source of controversy in the surfing world.[9] Meanwhile, McNamara continued to search for an even bigger wave.

In January 2013, McNamara broke his own world record by surfing an estimated 100-foot wave. He also did this off the coast of Nazaré.[11]

Beyond Surfing[edit]

McNamara became interested in Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and gave it his own twist, designing and manufacturing SUP boards for a more extreme experience and venturing to big wave venues like Waimea, Puerto Escondido and Mavericks. He was invited by the International Surfing Association in June 2009 to compete in the World Stand Up Paddle Surfing Championship, to which only 32 elite surfers were invited.

Personal life[edit]

McNamara is married to Nicole McNamara (née Macias), an environmental science teacher. The couple married in November 2012 in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal. They have three children, Barrel (2015), Theia Love Nazaré Celeste Rose (2018), and Fe do Mar Strawberry Lucy (2021). He has three children from his previous marriage to Konnie Pascual McNamara, including Ariana Kaimana McNamara (1995), Titus Waimea McNamara (1997), and Tiari McNamara.[15]
