Faryal was born in Syria on November 3, 1945.[1] She is an actress and dancer of mixed Indian and Arabic descent who works in Hindi films. She was a popular Bollywood cabaret dancer and actress in the 1960s and 1970s.[2]
Early life and background[ edit ]
Faryal was born in the Damascus area of Syria to an Indian father and a Syrian mother.[2] She completed her education at Loretto Convent, Simla, Cathedral High School and St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. Faryal worked for Air India as a stewardess for a time before getting into films. She is a product of the FilmaIaya School of Acting.[2]

Faryal entered Bollywood in the 1965 black and white film Zindagi Aur Maut, starring alongside Pradeep Kumar. This film contained the famous song “Dil Laga kar hum ye samjhe” sung solo by Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor; Both songs are available on YouTube. Faryal was liked by people and led to her getting the lead role in the film Biradari alongside Shashi Kapoor. The film was a total flop. She was known for her role as a cabaret dancer in the film Jewel Thief which was released in 1967. After the film’s release, offers started pouring in. In an interview in 1973, Faryal explained: “Ever since Goldie cast me in the role of that glamorous dancer in Jewel Thief, the filmmakers have called me an ‘excellent cabaret performer’: ‘Actually, I never learned to dance.’ ‘I don’t even dance gladly; I rather hate it.” She was also noted for her roles in Sachcha Jhootha, starring Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz, and Man Ki Aankhen, starring Dharmendra-Waheeda Rehman. At first, Faryal was afraid of being typecast and was reluctant to accept the numerous offers she received shortly after Jewel Thief’s release. But gradually she realized that if she turned down the roles, ten others were willing to replace her. “And now the bathtub scene in Aradh, released in 1972, had given me an even worse image,” she quipped. [2] Faryal retired from the film in 1984 after appearing as Jeetendra’s girlfriend in Gold Medal.
