Vicente Fernández Gómez (February 17, 1940 – December 12, 2021) was a Mexican singer, actor and film producer. Nicknames “Chente” (short for Vicente), “El Charro de Huentitán” (The Charro from Huentitán),[1] “El Ídolo de México” (The Idol of Mexico)[2] and “El Rey de la Música Ranchera” . ” (The King of Ranchera Music)[3] Fernández began his career as a busker and later became a cultural icon after recording more than 50 albums and contributing to more than 30 films. His repertoire consisted of rancheras and other Mexican classics .

Vicente Fernández was born on February 17, 1940[2] in the village of Huentitán El Alto, Jalisco, the son of a rancher and a housewife.[7] When he was between 6 and 7 years old he went with his mother to see the films with Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete and, as he himself once recalled, he said to his mother: “When I grow up I will be like they”.[8] After that he found a liking for music and at the age of 8 he was given a guitar which he learned to play while at the same time beginning to study folk music.[9]
The Fernández family found it difficult to make a living from selling the milk from the cows on their ranch. After Fernández finished elementary school, he and his family moved to Tijuana. As a teenager, Fernández began working in a variety of jobs, including bricklaying, painting, and carpentry. He sang during his working day, so that many construction companies asked him to work as a laborer. After these jobs, he was hired as a cashier at his uncle’s restaurant.[10] At the age of 14 he began singing in restaurants and at weddings and joined several mariachi groups such as mariachi Amanecer de Pepe Mendoza and mariachi de José Luis Aguilar. It was then that he took part in the radio show Amanecer Tapatío in Jalisco and was beginning to gain local recognition.[9] At the age of 21 he appeared in the television show La calandria musical. It was his first paid show.[11]
On December 27, 1963, he married Maria del Refugio Abarca Villaseñor,[11] with whom he had his first son Vicente, who was born prematurely and had to be incubated at home because Fernández could not pay for the hospital.[10] That year his 47-year-old mother died of cancer.[12]
In 1965 he moved to Mexico City to seek a future in the music world. His first attempts at the record companies were unsuccessful because it was the time of fame for the singer Javier Solís. There he arranged to sing on a program on what was then the country’s main radio station, XEX-AM. A few days after Solís’ early death in April 1966, Fernández received his first offers for albums.[8] His first contract was with CBS México, the record label in the Mexican division of CBS Records International, for which he recorded albums such as Soy de Abajo, Ni en Defensa Propia and Palabra de Rey. Some of Fernández’ songs like Tu Camino y El Mío and Perdóname were very successful.[9][7]

1970s and 1980s: Volver volver and the success of Fernández

Fernández had to wait a decade to solidify his career. With the death in 1973 of José Alfredo Jiménez, one of the great icons of rancheras, Fernández became a point of reference in the music industry.[13] His next album was La voz que estabas esperando and subsequent albums entitled El rey, El hijo del pueblo and Para recordar sold millions.[12]
In 1976, his fame was catapulted with the 1972 song Volver Volver, written by Fernando Z. Maldonado, due to the sales of that recording across the country and the Americas. This song has been covered by more than twenty singers including Chavela Vargas, Ry Cooder and Nana Mouskouri.[14]
In the 1980s, the style of Fernández’s songs changed from bolero ranchero to ranchera focused on migration. In fact, the song “Los Mandados” was a nod to those Mexicans migrating to the United States, and reproduced macho and patriotic stereotypes.[13] These were the years when he built his ranch Los 3 Potrillos, which would eventually become his music production center.[12] In 1983 he released his album 15 Grandes con el Numero Uno, which was the first to sell a million copies.[15] In 1984 he gave a concert in the Plaza de Toros México, which was attended by 54,000 people.[15]
In 1987 he embarked on his first tour outside of the United States and Mexico, traveling to Bolivia and Colombia.[16]

The US press spoke of Fernández as the “Mexican Sinatra” as early as 1991 and he published ranchera classics such as Las clásicas de José Alfredo Jiménez (1990), Lástima que seas ajena (1993), Aunque me duela el alma (1995), Mujeres divinas, Acá entre nos, Me voy a quitar de en medio (1998) and La mentira (1998), all of which became classics.[12]
In 1998, his older son, Vicente Jr., was kidnapped by the “Mocho Dedos” who demanded a ransom of $5 million. After Fernández Sr. paid $3.2 million to be released, Vicente Jr. was abandoned outside the family ranch 121 days later, with two fingers amputated. Fernández did all this without going to the police; Both he and his other son, Alejandro, continued to perform to maintain a semblance of normalcy in the public eye. In 2008, the kidnappers were sentenced to 50 years in prison.[17][18][19]

In 2001 he started the Lazos Invincibles Tour with his son Alejandro.[15] In 2006, Vicente Fernandez released the album La tragedia del vaquero, which went platinum in the US.[15]
In 2008, he again won a Latin Grammy with the album Para Siempre, released in 2007. In 2008, he released Prime Fila, which went double platinum in Mexico, platinum in Central America, platinum in Colombia, and double platinum plus gold in the United States. The album stayed at number one on the Billboard chart for seven consecutive weeks and resulted in him winning another Latin Grammy for Best Ranchero Album.
The concert he performed at the Zócalo in Mexico City on February 14, 2009 broke attendance records, with nearly 220,000 people gathering to hear him.[15] That same year he released the album Necesito de ti, which won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy the following year.[15] Vicente’s self-produced album El Hombre Que Más Te Amó was released in September 2010, for which he again won a Latin Grammy. In November 2011 he released Otra vez, which he also produced.[15]
After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Fernández was one of 50 Latin American singers who participated in the charity song “Somos El Mundo 25 Por Haiti,” a cover of “We Are the World.”[21]
Fernández opened the opening ceremony of the 2011 Pan American Games hosted by Guadalajara singing “México Lindo y Querido” and “Guadalajara”; later in the ceremony he sang the Mexican national anthem before the parade of athletes’ delegations.[22] In October 2011, taking advantage of his US tour, he signed a second three-year deal with Budweiser to sponsor scholarships for Hispanic American students through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.[23]

On February 8, 2012, in a press conference, he surprisingly announced his intention to retire from the stage, but indicated that he would continue recording albums and that it was not for health reasons, but because it was time to enjoy his work. That same year he recorded Return to Me with Tony Bennett at his Guadalajara ranch for Bennett’s album Viva Duets, on which Fernández sang in Spanish. In a later interview, Bennett said Fernández was “his favorite.”[26] He also released the album Hoy in 2012 and again won a Latin Grammy Award in the 2013 edition. This was followed in 2014 by the albums Mano a mano, tangos a la manera de Vicente Fernández (for which he won his second Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Album and was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Ranchera Album)[27] and “Muriendo de amor”, 2015.[20]
On November 28, 2013, Fernández presented his book entitled Pero sigo siendo el rey, in which he collects anecdotes and more than two hundred unpublished photographs about his professional career.[28]
The farewell concert entitled “Un azteca en el Azteca” (An Aztec within the Aztec) took place on April 16, 2016 at the Estadio Azteca in front of more than 80,000 people; entry was free. He sang more than 40 songs for more than four hours, the longest concert of his professional career. Fernandez made his film debut in 1971 with the film Tacos al carbón.[34] He starred in his first film in 1976 in La ley del monte.[9] In the 20 years he devoted to acting, he starred in 30 films, 18 of them directed by Rafael Villaseñor Kuri, and shared the stage with nationally known actors such as Blanca Guerra, Sara García, Fernando Soto, Resortes and Lucía Mendez .[34][35] He featured his music in films such as Port tu maldito amor, La ley del monte, El hijo del pueblo and Mi querido viejo, so the title of the film reflected the title of the song featured. Fernández stated that he had been interned at a hospital in Houston, USA, to undergo liver surgery, but he decided to turn down a transplant because he “didn’t want to sleep with [his] wife while he was having a liver.” another man who might have been a homosexual or a drug user.”[36]

Fernandez suffered from cancer twice: in 2002 he overcame prostate cancer and in 2012 he had a tumor removed from his liver. In 2013, he suffered a thrombosis that caused him to temporarily lose his voice, and in 2015 he underwent surgery to remove an abdominal hernia. He decided in 2012 to turn down a liver transplant.[45] In 2021, he was hospitalized for two days to be treated for a urinary tract infection and was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome.[46]

Fernández was long associated with the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), which ruled Mexico from 1929 to 2000 and again between 2012 and 2018. Fernández was one of the many performers who took part in the “Solidaridad” campaign during the tenure of Carlos Salinas de Gortari in the 1980s[12][47] and also appeared at PRI rallies, attended PRI events or met with politicians of this party; he once performed the song “Estos celos” for then-President Enrique Peña Nieto (a PRI member) during an official ceremony.[48][49][50]
He was born on the U.S. Invited to the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia to sing the famous Cielito Lindo, he ended up singing Los Mandados, considered an anthem for Mexican immigrants, and was met with criticism from those in attendance.

Fernández was hospitalized in serious condition after falling at his ranch in Guadalajara on August 6, 2021.[53] He had injured his cervical spine and was put on a ventilator under the intensive care unit.[54] Two weeks later, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome and began treatment on August 13. His son Vicente confirmed to the press that the disease was unrelated to the fall he suffered.[46] On October 26, 2021, he left the intensive care unit after improving his clinical condition.[55] On November 30, 2021, he was again admitted to the intensive care unit after a health complication caused by pneumonia. On December 11, his son again reported in an interview that his father had been sedated because his condition had deteriorated.[56]
Fernández died on December 12, 2021 at the age of 81 as a result of his injuries.[57][58][59] Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador mourned his death with a tweet recognizing Fernández as the “symbol of the ranchera song of our time, known and recognized in Mexico and abroad.” Colombian President Iván Duque said “his departure hurts us and his legacy will live forever”, US President Joe Biden said “the world of music has lost an icon”. Also on Twitter, leaders such as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe and Bolivia Evo Morales, as well as numerous Mexican and Latin American entertainment figures expressed their condolences out. [60] Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recognized Fernandez as “a musical icon and a good man”.[61] He died on the day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, to whom Fernández had a great devotion.[62]
Fernández’s body was transferred by the undertaker to the Arena VFG, which the artist had donated to his city of Guadalajara, where his family and at least six thousand fans were already waiting for him. Songs like “El Rey” and “Acá Entre Nos” were performed by his Mariachi Azteca.[63] There the coffin with his remains was placed in the center of the stage, which was transformed into an altar with a large crucifix dominating the scene and on one side an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe accompanied the coffin. His favorite sombrero rested on the coffin surrounded by a sea of white flowers.[63]
The Catholic funeral took place the following day in the same arena. The ceremony was alternated with songs from his most famous rancheras and ended with “Volver volver” as he wished, live. Afterwards his body was taken to his ranch where it was buried in a mausoleum.[64]

In 1990, Fernández released the album Vicente Fernandez y las clásicas de José Alfredo Jiménez, a tribute to Mexico’s famous Guanajuato songwriter, known as the “god of ranchera music”, José Alfredo Jiménez, who was also his main musical influence. The album earned him the Billboard and Univision Latin Music Award for Mexican Regional Male Artist of the Year, which he won five times from 1989 to 1993.
In 1998, Fernández was inducted into Billboard’s Latin Music Hall of Fame.[65] On November 11, 1998, his star was unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[66]
In 2002, the Latin Recording Academy recognized Fernández as Person of the Year.[67] This year marked his 35th anniversary in the entertainment industry, a career that has seen him sell more than 50 million records and be inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame.
