Kelly Willis Career
Kelly became interested in music after being heavily influenced by her mother, who used to sing in local musicals. One day while visiting a high school at the beach, she walked into a nearby pay recording booth and sang her own version of Elvis Presley’s “Teddy Bear.”
With the demo in hand, Willis impressed her then-boyfriend, drummer Mas Palermo, and joined his rockabilly band at the age of 16. The band hired her as lead singer and soon renamed the band Kelly Willis & the Fireballs. After graduating high school, the band deced to relocate to Austin, Texas to participate in Austin’s vibrant music scene. However, the band later broke up.
Willis and Palermo formed a new band called Radio Ranch. In Austin, Willis attracted the attention of several influential Texas singer-songwriters, including Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Griffith introduced Willis to MCA producer Tony Brown. Brown was very impressed with Willis’s vocal abilities and signed her to the MCA label in 1989.
MCA launched a major advertising campaign to promote Willis after recording their first collection on the market, the 1990 collection Well Traveled Love. MCA guaranteed Willis was hit by some national magazines, including bizarre scenes like Vogue and Mademoiselle. Her voice appeared in the 1991 film Thelma and Louise, supplied by Rley Scott, singing “Minimal Honey”.
She also had a small role in Tim Robbins’ 1992 film Bob Roberts. She was also voted Top New Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1993 ACM Awards alongse Faith Hill and Lari White (Hill eventually won the award).
Despite all the attention and positive reviews from most commentators, Well Traveled Love and Willis’ subsequent collections for MCA (Bang 1991 and Kelly Willis 1993) sold modestly and received almost no radio play. During this time, Willis became uncomfortable with the way she was being presented by MCA. In 1994, MCA released Willis from their agreement.
In 1995, Willis collaborated with Jay Farrar on the tune “Rex’s Blues” which appeared on the AIDS benefits pack Red Hot + Bothered, supplied by the Red Hot Organization.
After leaving MCA, she continued to pursue her music career. In 1996 she recorded an EP for A&M Records entitled Fading Fast. However, her relationship with A&M was short-lived; after working with two big labels
Willis deced to record her next album alone. Her efforts resulted in the 1999 album What I Deserve, which she sold to Rykodisc after the album was completed. What I Deserve received quite a bit of press upon its release. Wely regarded as her answer to her history with MCA, it received unanimous praise from critics, becoming a hit with Willis.

Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis and Their Favorite Love Songs
BRUCE ROBISON, “WRAPPED”
Robison: It’s cheesy to pick your own song, but I wrote “Wrapped” about Kelly. And every time I sing this song, I think of it as the happiest thing that’s ever happened to me. But it came back from a really sad time. We were dissolved. And now I’ve played it at 50 weddings, which is bizarre.
Willis: Yes, but to me the chorus is a love song; “I thought I was fine / I wanted to get you out of my mind / I see your face and then / I’m wrapped around your pretty little finger again.” It’s about being selflessly in love.
Robison: It’s a breakup song that turned into a love song. The song means something completely different to me now than when I wrote it.
WINGS, “Maybe I’m amazed”
Robison: We had a big argument about that.
Willis: Bruce said he couldn’t relate to songs that were so loving and loving and he couldn’t understand how anyone could write one. I was incredibly offended.
Robison: It was always difficult for me. I see myself more in the tradition of super sad country songs. There are love songs that I really like, but in most of them someone suffers or dies. I think for practical reasons, outwardly loving and affectionate love songs are really difficult to sit down and write.
Willis: And I think it should be very, very easy to write a song about how much you love me.
