Kendell Marvel

American singer-songwriter

musical artist

Kendell Marvel is an American country music singer and songwriter. In October 2017 he released his debut solo album Lowdown & Lonesome.[1]

Early life[edit]

Kendell Marvel was born and raised in Southern Illinois.[2] He quickly discovered his talent as a musician when his father took him to play honky tonks from the age of 10.[3] Raised between Galatia and Thompsonville, Illinois, he spent much of his youth traveling and playing shows in the area.[4] Marvel decided to relocate to Cheatham County, Tennessee in 1998 to pursue his songwriting career in Nashville, Tennessee.[5]

Career [edit]

On his first day in Nashville, Kendell wrote the song “Right Where I Need to Be,” which was edited by Gary Allen and reached #5 on the Billboard Country chart.[2] This initial success really kickstarted Kendell’s writing career and allowed him to work with a variety of artists, including Jake Owen, George Strait, and many more.[2] As his career progressed, he returned to his roots and found that a more traditional sound suited his songwriting and musical style better. In 2008 he wrote the title track for Jamey Johnson’s Grammy-nominated album That Lonesome Song, which was given the same name as the song.[6] Kendell has also written over 60 songs with country music star Chris Stapleton, including his Grammy-winning track “Either Way”.[5][7] In 2017, Marvel began a residency at Nashville’s Exit/In, performing monthly shows tagged “Kendell Marvel’s Honky Tonk Experience,” each month playing original songs and classic country hits with a different set of special guests.[ 8][9] Guests who have accompanied him on this stage include Cody Jinks, Brothers Osborne, Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson, Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett, Randy Houser, Ashley McBryde and many more.[8][9][10] [11][12]

In 2017, Marvel released his debut solo album Lowdown and Lonesome, a 10-track concept album telling tales of heartbreak and vice, produced by Keith Gattis, with songs co-written by acts such as Chris Stapleton and Randy Houser.[1] [12]

Marvel will release its second studio album, Solid Gold Sounds, co-produced by Dan Auerbach and David R. Ferguson, on October 11, 2019.[13]

CONCORD MUSIC PUBLISHING SIGNS COUNTRY SONGWRITER AND NASHVILLE STAPLE KENDELL MARVEL

Concord Music Publishing announced a new worldwide publishing agreement with award-winning singer-songwriter Kendell Marvel. As of now, it covers future work in development.

He started playing country cover shows in bars at age 10, and as the gigs continued, Marvel relocated to Nashville to pursue a career in songwriting. Shortly after arriving in Nashville, he wrote Gary Allan’s first Top 5 hit, “Right Where I Need to Be.”

Marvel has had its songs recorded by country music’s finest artists including Chris Stapleton, Blake Shelton, Brothers Osborne, Jake Owen, George Strait, Jamey Johnson, Lee Ann Womack, Aaron Watson and more. As his songwriting success grew, Marvel never lost sight of his dream of a solo career. He performed monthly shows titled “Kendell Marvel’s Honky Tonk Experience” at Nashville’s Exit/In, where he performed a mix of original songs and classic country hits and was joined by several notable guests including Cody Jinks, Brothers Osborne, Alison Krauss, Foo Fighters, Randy Houser and Ashley McBryde.

In 2017 Marvel released his debut solo album Lowdown & Lonesome and in October 2019 followed his second album Solid Gold Sounds, which he wrote and recorded in just a few days. The album was co-produced by GRAMMY winners Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and David R. Ferguson. Marvel and Auerbach co-wrote nine of the album’s ten songs, which reflect his life as an accomplished songwriter, singer, father and husband. Other collaborators include John Anderson, “Big” Al Anderson, Ronnie Bowman, Pat McLaughlin, Paul Overstreet and Bobby Wood.

“As a songwriter and as an artist, Kendell represents the core of country music. His way of writing about the raw truths of life, heartbreak and pain, life, love and having a hell of a good time is what it’s about,” said Brad Kennard, SVP A&R at Concord Music Publishing in Nashville. “Having admired his work for years, I am thrilled that we are getting the chance to work with him.”

“I am thrilled to join the diverse roster of writers and artists that make up the Concord family. I’ve known Brad Kennard for almost 15 years and look forward to working with him and his crew,” Kendell told Marvel.

Throughout the pandemic, Marvel has continued to entertain and connect with audiences

through streamed performances, including his acoustic series Alive at the Bluebird, hosted by the legendary Bluebird Cafe. Featuring performances by Kendell Marvel himself, along with Shane McAnally and others, this weekly livestream event supports fundraising for the nonprofit Alive Hospice in Middle Tennessee.
