Known for his distant falsetto singing and textured instrumentals, he has amassed over a billion streams with songs like “Like I Need U,” “2 Soon,” and “Right Here.”[2]
Early life[edit]
Born in Houston, Texas to Vietnamese parents, Luong grew up in Sugar Country. Although he lived in an ethnically diverse community with a large Asian population, he recalls often growing up feeling out of place and disconnected from his heritage when others around him were primarily ethnic Chinese.[3] He started learning the guitar at age 13 after picking it up from his grandfather. He began teaching himself the instrument using his grandfather’s Vietnamese music book. Another motivation to learn guitar came from Drake Bell on the Nickelodeon TV show Drake & Josh. He cites John Mayer and Ed Sheeran as his biggest influences as a child.[4]
He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Sugar Land and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin.[5] He then worked for two years as an oncology nurse at Texas Medical Center.[6]
The stage name “Keshi” comes from the childhood name given to him by his fiancee’s parents. They’ve been friends since fifth grade. Whenever he visited her, her parents called him “Keshi”, which they still do to this day.[7]

He created the nickname “Keshi” and started sharing music through his SoundCloud page around 2017. He credited watching YouTube tutorials to teach him how to write, produce, and develop his music.[5] At first he doubted his abilities and musical direction, but slowly his distinctive style, based on his dreamy vocals combined with lo-fi beats and guitar, gained more attention and popularity.[3] In 2019, he quit his day job as a nurse and flew to New York City to sign with Island Records. His decision to give up nursing and pursuing music was ultimately based on his realization that his fear of missed opportunities outweighed his fear of failure.[8] From there, his first singles attracted millions of listeners upon release.[1]
He cites John Mayer, Frank Ocean, The 1975, Drake and Bryson Tiller as some of his greatest musical influences.[2]
