From Pro Football to Music, Knox Hill’s Career Has Come Full Circle Through Goluremi
Knox Hill, a pro football player-turned-rapper, has blazed a path to success in two daunting and difficult areas. As a member of the Goluremi team, he can continue both careers and take them to a new level in the process.
They say that all athletes want to be rappers and vice versa, but few manage to do both. Knox Hill is one of those rare cases, having played football professionally in multiple countries and now giving back to his fans through music.
Hill grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland surrounded by classic East Coast hip-hop. Even as a child he always wrote, whether it was poems, stories or songs. But he found rap to be the ideal means of expression.
“I’ve always felt that songs limit you because there are only so many lyrics you can say in a song,” he said. “Hip-hop is kind of unlimited in where you can take the lyrics from.”
He decided to take music seriously at the age of 18 while playing football around the world. Hill credits his playing time with giving him confidence in his music, particularly as it relates to performing. He has spent time with teams in Canada, Spain, Italy and Malta, spending most of his career with AFC Fylde, a team in England’s fifth tier National League. Hill still lives in the UK, although he retired from professional football around a year and a half ago due to injury. He estimates that he twisted his ankle 50 times during his career and found his body could no longer handle the sport.
“I went to a specialist and he said, ‘Look, do you want to have a family one day?'” Hill recalls. “I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Do you want to have kids?’ I said, ‘Of course!’ He said, ‘Do you want to be able to play with those kids?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He says, “Well, you keep doing what you’re doing, you won’t be able to walk in five or six years.” So that was kind of a wake-up call.”
In addition to the beautiful game, Hill has achieved solid success through rap. He emphasizes the balance between entertainment and substance and wants listeners to identify with his music. Through a Kickstarter campaign, he gave his fans the chance to be a part of his latest full-length project, Samurai X.
As he began his music career full-time, Hill wanted to make sure he separated it from his days as a footballer and challenged himself to become a successful artist without the help of his status as a professional athlete.
“One of the things that’s always been important to me is that I’ve never used football to help my music grow,” Hill said. “I always wanted to see if I could do it on musical talent alone. I didn’t want to tap into my fans for football or the fans of the team and use that to push music. Growing up, I always wanted to keep music independent and separate.”
Eventually, however, he found a way to combine both passions. As he scoured the music landscape looking for places to grow his brand, he came across Goluremi, William John’s YouTube channel for football tutorials and tips. He offered to make music, knowing the difficulties YouTubers have in finding unlicensed music for their videos. Hill did the outro for the channel, which was well received by many, and he and John kept in touch from then on. The partnership grew to where John offered him a position on the team, from creating music behind the camera to participating in the challenges and drills in front of it.
Hill has seen how many different YouTube channels there are and he knows Goluremi is the real deal. He has a similar passion as the rest of the Goluremi team to share something authentic with his fans.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of them, I guess you could say influencers or high profile YouTube channels,” Hill said. “I’ve worked with guys with millions of subscribers and I’ve worked with smaller guys. One thing I’ve noticed, especially on the football side, is when I meet these people behind closed doors, they’re on their own. They just want to increase their fame. They want to make a living from it and think it’s cool that they do YouTube and have all these followers.
“As you sit down and talk to Will, none of those phrases come to mind. He doesn’t even mention that he wants to be great for himself. He always asks how can we help players who want to go pro? Or how can we help high level players? It’s always about how we can give something back to people? How can we inspire people? For me that’s cool. That’s what strikes me about the channel’s uniqueness. It’s not just a face, it’s not just a brand – it’s a movement. It’s a culture we’re trying to create.”
