Early life and career[edit]
Kerslake was born in Winton, Bournemouth, Hampshire (now Dorset), England. He started playing drums at the age of 11 and got his first professional gig with The Gods in 1969, with whom he recorded three albums. He later played with Toe Fat and the National Head Band before teaming up with Uriah Heep in November 1971. [1]
Uriah Heep[edit]
Kerslake first appeared with Uriah Heep on her 1972 album Demons and Wizards and recorded nine studio albums and one live album with the band before departing in 1978 after the Fallen Angels tour. During this time he also played on the solo albums of David Byron and Ken Hensley. On the Firefly album, he was credited as Lee “The Bear” Kerslake, the nickname being a reference to his growing beard and overall solid physical build.
After achieving extreme commercial success with Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s, Kerslake rejoined Uriah Heep in time for their Abominog album, considered by many critics to be a comeback album for the band. He would remain with the band through January 2007, appearing on a further six studio albums and bringing his total contribution to Uriah Heep’s output to 17 studio albums along with several live albums.
Ozzy Osbourne[edit]
In 1980, Kerslake ran into ex-Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne in an elevator at the King’s Cross Hotel in Australia. “He was in one corner with his bodyguard and his manager and I was in the other corner with mine. Pretty funny.”[2] They would soon form the band Blizzard of Ozz with bassist Bob Daisley and guitarist Randy Rhoads, although due to a management decision the band would soon become an Ozzy Osbourne solo project. Kerslake’s work can be heard on Osbourne’s first two solo albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, as well as the 1980 live EP and parts of the 1987 live album Tribute.
Kerslake left Osbourne’s band in early 1981 to take care of his ailing mother.[3] The Notes of a Madman’s Diary did not credit Kerslake and bassist Bob Daisley, instead giving credit to drummer Tommy Aldridge and bassist Rudy Sarzo. Aldridge said of the Diary of a Madman album, “I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s not my drumming on this album. I never gave credit to that recording and whenever Lee Kerslake was asked or interviewed I gave him the credit he rightly deserved.”[4]
Later career[edit]
In 1998, Kerslake and Daisley filed a joint lawsuit against Osbourne and his wife/manager Sharon, seeking royalties and songwriting credits for their contributions to the Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman albums. The Osbourne camp responded by removing Kerslake and Daisley’s performances from the 2002 reissues of both albums and having them re-recorded by bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Mike Bordin. Due to fan objections, the original bass and drum tracks were restored when the albums were re-issued in 2011.
Kerslake wasn’t sure why the Osbourne camp had treated him so negatively: “The only thing I ever remembered was that Ozzy once asked me to speak to her (Sharon) on his behalf about the two shows in Speaking New York in one night, as Ozzy said “I can’t do two shows in one night – not with my voice!” He told me to tell her. I did what he said. I would have died for Ozzy because we were a band and I loved him as such. Because I broke the news to her, she hated my gut,” he recalled in 2011. [5] Entertainment attorney Steven Machat, who was involved in the deal Osbourne signed with Jet Records, said in his 2011 book Gods, Gangsters and Honour : A Rock ‘n’ Roll Odyssey that Sharon was not happy with the level of creative input from Daisley and Kerslake had in the band and wanted Ozzy to be in full control, he suspects this led to the breakup and anything Resentment she’s harbored toward the drummer ever since.[6] The album’s producer, Max Norman, who produced both albums, agrees that Daisley and Kerslake made significant songwriting contributions during their time in the band, but also notes suggests that the Osbourne camp “may wish to dispute that now”.[7]
In 2003, Kerslake became part of the “supergroup” Living Loud, a hard rock project featuring bassist Bob Daisley, guitarist Steve Morse and vocalist Jimmy Barnes. Keyboardist Don Airey made a cameo appearance. The group released a self-titled debut CD featuring covers of several Daisley/Kerslake-written Ozzy Osbourne tracks.
In 2003, Kerslake and Daisley’s lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court in Los Angeles. This dismissal was upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.[8] Kerslake has performed with his own band, the Lee Kerslake Band, made guest appearances with various bands, and appeared regularly with ex-Heep members Ken Hensley and Paul Newton on Uriah Heep Legends.
In early 2007, it was announced on the Uriah Heep website that Kerslake had left the band “due to ongoing health issues”. Kerslake was semi-retired due to illness.
In 2015, Lee began recording his first solo album, Eleventeen, which stemmed from his childhood and couldn’t understand why there weren’t eleven.
In 2016, Lee teamed up with London Bridge Films’ Tayla Goodman, whom he met while dog walking in Crystal Palace Park, and together with Pyrojunkies’ Shane Cauldwell they produced a music video for his solo album Celia Seanna.
In 2018, Kerslake and Goodman began filming a documentary about Lee’s life and bucket list. Lee insisted he wanted to leave a legacy for his fans and some money for his wife Sue. The documentary will star Deep Purple’s Ian Paice, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Uriah Heep’s Mick Box, Iron Maiden’s Nicko Mcbrain and Kiss’ Gene Simmons. The documentary should be completed by September 2019.
Health problems and death[edit]
In December 2018, Kerslake revealed he was battling prostate cancer, saying that “the doctor gave me about eight months to live.” He further explained that five years ago he was given four years to live. Kerslake’s other health complications include psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and two heart murmurs.[9]
Kerslake announced that his dying wish was to receive the platinum album certifications for the albums Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman he had been working on, and Osbourne granted that wish. Kerslake wrote a letter to Osbourne informing him of his poor health and his desire to preserve the records. Kerslake then received his platinum plaques.[10]
On December 14, 2018, Kerslake performed on stage at Shepherd’s Bush Empire with Uriah Heep and contributed drums and vocals to “Lady in Black”.

[5] Entertainment attorney Steven Machat, who was involved in the deal Osbourne signed with Jet Records, said in his 2011 book Gods, Gangsters and Honour : A Rock ‘n’ Roll Odyssey that Sharon was not happy with the level of creative input from Daisley and Kerslake had in the band and wanted Ozzy to be in full control, he suspects this led to the breakup and anything Resentment she’s harbored toward the drummer ever since.[6] The album’s producer, Max Norman, who produced both albums, agrees that Daisley and Kerslake made significant songwriting contributions during their time in the band, but also notes suggests that the Osbourne camp “may wish to dispute that now”.[7]
In 2003, Kerslake became part of the “supergroup” Living Loud, a hard rock project featuring bassist Bob Daisley, guitarist Steve Morse and vocalist Jimmy Barnes. Keyboardist Don Airey made a cameo appearance. The group released a self-titled debut CD featuring covers of several Daisley/Kerslake-written Ozzy Osbourne tracks.
In 2003, Kerslake and Daisley’s lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court in Los Angeles. This dismissal was upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.[8] Kerslake has performed with his own band, the Lee Kerslake Band, made guest appearances with various bands, and appeared regularly with ex-Heep members Ken Hensley and Paul Newton on Uriah Heep Legends.
In early 2007, it was announced on the Uriah Heep website that Kerslake had left the band “due to ongoing health issues”. Kerslake was semi-retired due to illness.
In 2015, Lee began recording his first solo album, Eleventeen, which stemmed from his childhood and couldn’t understand why there weren’t eleven.
In 2016, Lee teamed up with London Bridge Films’ Tayla Goodman, whom he met while dog walking in Crystal Palace Park, and together with Pyrojunkies’ Shane Cauldwell they produced a music video for his solo album Celia Seanna.
In 2018, Kerslake and Goodman began filming a documentary about Lee’s life and bucket list. Lee insisted he wanted to leave a legacy for his fans and some money for his wife Sue. The documentary will star Deep Purple’s Ian Paice, Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Uriah Heep’s Mick Box, Iron Maiden’s Nicko Mcbrain and Kiss’ Gene Simmons. The documentary should be completed by September 2019.
Health problems and death[edit]
In December 2018, Kerslake revealed he was battling prostate cancer, saying that “the doctor gave me about eight months to live.” He further explained that five years ago he was given four years to live. Kerslake’s other health complications include psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and two heart murmurs.[9]
Kerslake announced that his dying wish was to receive the platinum album certifications for the albums Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman he had been working on, and Osbourne granted that wish. Kerslake wrote a letter to Osbourne informing him of his poor health and his desire to preserve the records. Kerslake then received his platinum plaques.[10]
On December 14, 2018, Kerslake performed on stage at Shepherd’s Bush Empire with Uriah Heep and contributed drums and vocals to “Lady in Black”.
On September 19, 2020, Kerslake died of cancer at the age of 73.[12] Before his death, he had completed recording a solo album titled Eleventeen, which was released posthumously on February 26, 2021.
