Annie Lennox was born on Christmas Day 1954 in Aberdeen, Scotland. She is the daughter of Dorothy Farquharson (née Ferguson; 1930–2003) and Thomas Allison Lennox (1925–1986).[16][17]
In the 1970s, Lennox won a place at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied flute, piano and harpsichord for three years. She lived on a scholarship and worked part-time jobs for extra money. In 1976, Lennox was a flute player with a band called Dragon’s Playground, which he left before they appeared on ITV’s New Faces talent show. From 1977 to 1980 she was the lead singer of the Tourists, a British pop band and her first collaboration with Dave Stewart.[23]
Lennox and Stewart’s second collaboration, the 1980s synth-pop duo Eurythmics, led to her most notable fame as the lead singer of the alto/soul duo. Lennox began collaborating with Stephen Lipson, a former protégé of Trevor Horn, beginning with her 1992 debut solo album Diva. It was a commercial and critical success, peaking at #1 in the UK, #7 in Australia, #6 in Germany and #6 23 in the US, where it was certified double platinum. The album debuted at number 1 in the UK Albums Chart and has since sold over 1.2 million copies in the UK alone and has been certified quadruple platinum.[38] It was also a hit in the US, where it was a Top 30 hit and has sold more than 2,700,000 copies.[33] In 1993, the album was included in Q magazine’s list of the “50 Best Albums of 1992”. Although Lennox’s profile dwindled for a period due to her desire to raise her two children away from media attention, she continued to record. Their second album, Medusa, was released in March 1995. It consisted entirely of cover songs, all originally recorded by male artists such as Bob Marley, The Clash and Neil Young. It debuted at number 1 on the UK Albums Chart, reached number 5 in Australia and number 11 in the US, spent 60 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold over 2,000,000 copies in the US to date. It has achieved double platinum status in both the UK and US.[38][40] The album spawned four UK singles: “No More ‘I Love You’s'” (which debuted at #2 in the UK Singles Chart, Lennox’s highest-ever solo peak), [31] “A Whiter Shade of Pale” , “Waiting in Vain”. ‘ and ‘Something so right’. The album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 1996 Grammy Awards, but lost to Joni Mitchell’s Turbulent Indigo, but Lennox won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the single “No More ‘I Love You’s'”. [42] Although Lennox declined to tour for the album, she did give a major one-off concert in New York’s Central Park which was filmed and later released on home video.Lennox provided an extensive 1995 solo vocal performance (without lyrics) for the Apollo 13 film soundtrack score. The album reached #3 in the UK, #10 in Australia and #4 in the US – her highest charting album in the US to date.[49] She embarked on her first tour as a solo artist to promote the album. Simply titled Solo Tour, the tour toured ahead of the album’s release, visiting both the US and Europe, with only two nights in the UK at Saddler’s Wells Theater in London. The album went gold in both the UK and US and was nominated for Best Pop Album at the 46th Grammy Awards. The album was released with a DVD containing interviews and acoustic versions of songs by Lennox.
In 2004, Lennox won the Academy Award for Best Song for “Into the West” from the film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,[52] which she co-wrote with screenwriter Fran Walsh and composer Howard Shore. Lennox performed the song live at the 76th Academy Awards. The song also won a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Lennox’s fourth solo album, Songs of Mass Destruction, ended her long association with Stephen Lipson and was recorded in Los Angeles with veteran producer Glen Ballard (known for producing Alanis Morissette’s album Jagged Little Pill). Released on October 1, 2007, it was the final studio album of Lennox’s contract with BMG. It reached #7 in the UK and #9 in the US.[30][31] Lennox stated that she believes the album consists of “twelve strong, powerful, really emotional songs that people can connect to”. If she can do that, she says, “I’ll be proud of it, whether it sells 10 million copies or 50 million.”[56] Lennox described it as “a dark album, but the world is a dark place. It’s tense, it’s turbulent. Most people’s lives are punctuated by drama of all kinds: there are highs, there are lows – the flickering candle.”[57] She added: “Half the people drink or take drugs to numb it. Many people are in pain.”[57]
The album’s first single was “Dark Road”, released September 24, 2007. Another song on the album, “Sing”, is a collaboration between Lennox and 23 prominent female artists: Anastacia, Isobel Campbell, Dido, Celine Dion, Melissa Etheridge, Fergie, Beth Gibbons, Faith Hill, Angelique Kidjo, Beverly Knight, Gladys Knight, k.d. Lang, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Beth Orton, Pink, Kelis, Bonnie Raitt, Shakira, Shingai Shoniwa, Joss Stone, Sugababes, KT Tunstall, and Martha Wainwright. The song was recorded to raise money and awareness for the HIV/AIDS organization’s Treatment Action Campaign.[58] The group of singers includes the TAC activist members’ own singing group known as The Generics, whose music CD inspired Lennox to make “Sing”. To promote Songs of Mass Destruction, Lennox embarked on a primarily North American tour called Annie Lennox Sings, which lasted throughout October and November 2007.

The compilation was eventually released on February 17, 2009 in the US and March 9, 2009 in the UK and Europe. The track listing includes songs from her four solo albums, one from Bram Stoker’s Dracula soundtrack, and two new songs. One of them is a cover of Ash’s single “Shining Light”. The other is a cover of a song by English band Keane, originally the B-side of their first single from 2000. Lennox renamed the song from its original title “Closer Now” to “Pattern of My Life”. A limited 3-disc edition of the album contained a DVD compilation of most of Lennox’s solo videos since 1992, as well as a second CD of rarer songs, including a version of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” starring Alicia Keys and Lennox’s Oscar-winning “Into the West” from the third “Lord of the Rings” film. The album entered the UK Albums Chart at number 2 and stayed in the top 10 for seven weeks.[61]
Lennox’s record deal with Sony BMG ended with the release of Songs of Mass Destruction and subsequent retrospective album The Collection, and in late 2007/early 2008 there was much press coverage of the apparent animosity between Lennox and the record company. Lennox has stated that during a trip to South Africa in December 2007 to perform at the 46664 campaign in Johannesburg, the label’s regional corporate office went three weeks unanswered to calls and emails she had directed to them and was a total failure had to promote the Sing project as planned. In August 2010, Lennox signed a new deal with Island Records in the UK and Decca Records in the US (both part of Universal Music Group).[63] Their first release was a Christmas album entitled A Christmas Cornucopia, released November 15, 2010. The album is a collection of Lennox’s renditions of traditional holiday songs such as “Silent Night” and “The First Noel”, along with a new composition, “Universal Child”, which was released on October 13, 2010 as a download-only single. Lennox performed on stage at Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday concert in 1988 and thereafter began activist work with the Sing Foundation.[77] In 1990, Lennox recorded a version of Cole Porter’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” for the Cole Porter tribute album Red Hot + Blue, a benefit to AIDS awareness.
