Poncho and Imanol Quezada initially worked together as a duet. They had been making music since they were children, but Poncho, who was six years older, quickly established himself as a ten-string guitarist and vocalist in a number of other local bands. To form their own group, he recruited his younger brother, who plays the accordion, as a songwriter and harmony singer.
The pair honed their skills by performing at neighboring truck plazas in Torreon and posting footage on social media. After receiving good feedback, they decided to expand on the traditional Norteo by adding a rhythm component. They performed at small venues and street festivals before being chosen as the opening act for La Trakalosa de Monterrey in 2017. They acquired an agent and began opening up to tour in Coahuila since it worked so well.

The album’s theme tune featured a collaboration with Luciano Diaz, a well-known Uruguayan composer. El Fantasma was impressed with the album (Mexican regional singer-songwriter Alexander Garcia).
He wrote them an Instagram message that he wanted to re-record their corrido “El Envidioso” with them. He also promoted the band to his record company, Afinarte Music. They signed the foursome based on his word, their music, and their rising popularity in video and streaming. The label took the band on tour for En Vivo Desde Las Caas after they released the live En Vivo with Banda y Norteno to close the year. In early 2019, it drew a lot of attention on social media.
Los Dos Carnales returned to the studio a few months later and recorded the EP Dio Vuelta la Monedat. As a thank you to their champion, it included the tribute song “El Corrido de El Fantasma”. Since then, Los Dos Carnales has recorded and performed on several of its tracks alongside El Fantasma.
Afinarte Music pushed the band back into the studio while their videos continued to garner millions of views. The eight-song Somos Arrieros was released in late 2019 to critical acclaim. Brothers Poncho Jr. and Imanol Quezada have been performing for more than 10 years, playing on buses and at markets and local parties in their hometown of Coahuila, Mexico. But it was only last year that Los Dos Carnales made their big breakthrough.
The Norteño group, made up of the Quezada brothers on lead vocals Kevin Marquez and Armando Hernandez, were signed to regional Mexican label AfinArte last year after being “discovered” by El Fantasma (also signed to AfinArte), which contacted them in 2018 to work together.

“[El Fantasma] was sent as a message on Instagram, but we thought it was a fake account or something,” Poncho tells Billboard. “We replied and didn’t hear from him for a while and I was like, ‘Well, that doesn’t happen anymore.'” Then he wrote back and said he wanted to record our corrido ‘El Fue Arturo’ with us. ”
It was then that El Fantasma introduced AfinArte to the music of Los Dos Carnales and subsequently the label signed the group.
“It was a very special moment in our career. When we heard that AfinArte wanted to sign us, I started browsing their social media and realized that’s where we belong,” says Poncho. “We’re similar – because, like us, they want to keep traditional regional Mexican sounds alive. We won’t let AfinArte down. We work hard.”
The hard work has paid off. Los Dos Carnales achieved their first top 10 on the regional Mexican airplay chart (as of July 11) with “El Envidioso”. It also became the Mexican group’s first Top 10 in a Billboard airplay. “It’s huge! We honestly couldn’t believe it,” says Poncho. “We never thought something like this could happen to us. People accept our very humble music.”
It’s her core Norteño sound – enabled by an accordion, four-string bass guitar, bajo sexto (sext bass) and drums – that sets her apart in a crowded field of regional Mexican sounds. “We want people to know that música norteña is still relevant today. There are many different styles now and we respect them, but we want to make sure we stand for what we are known for and will always defend: Norteño.”
On July 10th Los Dos Carnales released their new album Al Estilo Rancheron, a 14-track set containing corridos, romantic melodies and covers. “It was made with a lot of love and we hope people enjoy it,” says Imanol.
