Fashion Designer Peter Hidalgo Dies at 53

Fashion designer Peter Hidalgo, 53, died in Manhattan on January 17.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, according to publicist Marion Greenberg.

At the time of his death, Hidalgo was in a homeless shelter where he had been temporarily living in hopes of qualifying for subsidized housing, according to his friend and former employer, Miguel Adrover.

Asif Zaidi, who worked with Hidalgo a few years ago, said his decision to live at the shelter was a sign of his kindness as he doesn’t want to impose himself on his friends.

A spokesman for the New York City Medical Examiner said Tuesday that Hidalgo’s case is still under investigation.

A co-winner of Fashion Group International’s 2010 Rising Star award for womenswear, Hidalgo has worked primarily with a few private clients over the past few years, including Nicki Minaj. He had given up his studio.

A private memorial service is planned for this spring.

Adrover met Hidalgo in 1994 at The Sound Factory club. “Peter was in drag. He was that night creature. He was really famous for being fashionable in all the houses [of the ballroom]. He dressed up and worked in clubs as a dancer,” Adrover said.

Hidalgo began the New York chapter of his fashion life by working as an in-house designer, designing the windows of a West Village boutique. “There were five people who worked there. They were cheeky club kids. He made these amazing windows with the mannequins. Everyone used to go to see his windows and everyone talked about it,” Adrover said. “We were friends the whole time I was in New York. We were friends before we worked on fashion together. All these years we were like brothers.”

After the 2001 terrorist attacks, Hidalgo arrived at Adrover’s downtown studio. When Adrover’s right-hand man Sebastian Pons left, Hidalgo took his place. “Peter was one of the best illustrators of all time. I have many illustrations of him from all the looks in the collections. He personalized the faces and the bodies of the models,” Adrover said. “I remember spending many, many nights drawing and drawing late into the night. He was sometimes a little unreliable. But he was really creative and he had a lot of energy.”

Raised in a creative family, Hidalgo’s father was a professional musician. Hidalgo’s interest in illustration and fashion began at school in his native Santo Domingo. Hidalgo was selected by the highly respected fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez to enroll in a special course at the Altos de Chavon School of Design, a subsidiary of the Parsons School of Design. There, Hidalgo honed his illustration and design skills.

In 1987, Hidalgo was named “Best Designer of the Year” by his school. (Lopez died that same year.) Coverage of Hidalgo’s victory in local newspapers helped the designer land his first job designing clothes for local fashion boutiques in the Dominican Republic. At the same time he created unique pieces for private customers. Hidalgo’s success in the fashion industry enabled him to do styling, make-up, art direction and set design for television and theater production companies in the Dominican Republic. Some of his private clients also commissioned him to decorate their homes.

Hidalgo began traveling to New York City in 1990 to source fabrics for his fashion creations, moved to Manhattan in 1994, and joined Adrover seven years later.

“I didn’t have any money then. I had this big studio on Chrystie Street. I had about five people living with me, sleeping under the tables and all. Peter built this small room like a bunker out of wood. He used to live in the corner,” Adrover said. “There was a lot of energy back then. You didn’t need money to work. It was about the energy you had inside you. We didn’t have a business plan or anything like that. That’s unimaginable at the moment, I think.”

Adrover’s first collection with Hidalgo on board was called Citizens of the World and the pair combined men’s and women’s collections with The Surreal Real World, The Americans and others.

“He was a real fashion designer. He really loved being in fashion,” Adrover said.

Zaidi also met Hidalgo at The Sound Factory and recalled noticing the vintage Yves Saint Laurent burgundy velvet jacket he was wearing. About 20 years later, Zaidi took care of beautifying Hidalgo’s designs for celebrity clients. “He was just a genius with patterns and drapes, mixing his innovative ideas with classic ones. He had a very different way of looking at fashion that was very modern for the time. But at the same time he loved very classic silhouettes like Dior,” said Zaidi. “His fit was everything.”

Hidalgo also contributed to collaborative costume design for a special project with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and for a “Dancers Responding to AIDS” benefit with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

After Adrover closed his company and moved back to Mallorca, Hidalgo later traveled there to help him set up his studio. Hidalgo went on to launch his own label and made his New York Fashion Week debut in February 2006 with Rita Hayworth-inspired silhouettes updated with a fresh, modern twist.

After last speaking to Hidalgo three weeks ago, Adrover said he has become increasingly difficult to reach. “I know he wasn’t well. He was really difficult to connect with,” Adrover said. “I kept telling him, ‘Peter, dear, you should move back to Santo Domingo because you have your family.’ Besides, you know what New York is like. If you don’t have money, it’s really a difficult city to survive. He wasn’t young either. I was devastated.”

Hidalgo shared the 2010 Rising Star award for womenswear with Joseph Altuzarra. Hidalgo’s supporters included the late FGI boss Margaret Hayes, fashion writer Marylou Luther, fashion editor Rushka Bergman and retailer Linda Dresner. The FGI award motivated Hidalgo to put together a runway presentation in just two weeks. The ultra-sophisticated minimalist designs are inspired by the concept of love. One of the winning looks on his runway was the Black Angel dress, which featured scratched pleats at the back that resembled wings.

Like many young designers trying to break into Manhattan, Hidalgo found that breaking into major retailers and securing substantial funding was not a given. But he continued to make seasonal collections until 2013. During this time he also dressed celebrities including Kanye West and Usher, who wore Hidalgo suits to the 2011 MTV Music Video Awards and Grammy Awards respectively. Until 2014, Hidalgo mainly worked with private clients and celebrity clients. Nicki Minaj wore a Hidalgo dress to the opening performance of the MTV Europe Music Awards, which she also hosted.

In 2019 he collaborated with artist David Salle and As If magazine for the project The Collaboratory, designing cocktail dresses with screen prints of Salle’s art. Avengers: Endgame actress Scarlett Johansson modeled the clothes on three different as-if covers.

As Tatijana Shoan of If said after Hidalgo was featured in the opening issue, he continued to contribute in every way he could – renting dresses for last minute photo shoots and creating bespoke dresses for celebrity portraits. He even surprised her by designing a three-piece suit for her engagement party, as well as an “exquisite” wedding dress.

“I will always appreciate Peter’s commitment to excellence, excellent taste, unmatched loyalty, kindness, laughter, the sparkle in his eyes and tremendous talent,” Shoan said.

When Adrover’s repurposed Burberry raincoat was featured in a Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Adrover told Hildago that they needed to update it. Hidalgo then posted a picture of a curvaceous black woman wearing it. “He was a real New Yorker. He built New York’s nightlife. He was part of the energy in the city in the ’90s,” Adrover said.

Hidalgo is survived by his mother and a few siblings whose names could not be immediately ascertained.
