Administration contacted her mother eight months after her death and asked how she would handle having Olivia’s name called upon graduation – but she didn’t have an easy answer.
Olivia’s life was anything but still, so Alison knew Olivia would probably squirm in her seat as she watched the stalls full of people who sat in silence and honored her.
To her friends and her mother, Olivia was the kind of person who always rolled down her car windows when it was over 60 degrees Fahrenheit, always turned down a serious conversation when given the choice to laugh instead, and a never-no- Attitude everywhere she went. She found it hard to let anyone show that side of her, but according to East alum and Olivia’s close friend Katie Overstreet, it was a pleasure when she did.
Her fiery red hair and the way everything she owned was red were two main hallmarks of her boldness when around the people she felt comfortable with. A lifelong friend of Olivia and senior Jane Thiede says Olivia had guts and style and she wasn’t willing to let anything change that — whether it was a casual comment down the hall or someone who started a fight.
Olivia was the kind of person who knew what she wanted. She spent countless hours secretly admiring her red hair in the mirror, ordering her plain McChickens with cheese and honey mustard, and heavily layering all of her gold jewelry. She laced up her Jordans every day, critiqued her modeling photos for the deal she just signed with a California agency, dreamed of her future home in Santa Barbara, California, where she would move after graduation, idolized Kylie Jenner, and adored all things red .
“She liked what she liked and you wouldn’t change it,” Jane said. “She was just very Olivia the whole time.”

Olivia was the kind of friend who always bounced off walls, but she also spread that magnetic energy that made her friends want to bounce off walls, too. When Jane lay on her bed lounging and watching a movie, Olivia would sit on her until she was ready to get up and try something new. Her adventures were as limitless as Olivia. They visited an alpaca farm, drove 30 minutes for edible cookie dough, dressed up for Justin Bieber’s “Believe” tour in a full mix match, and took too many austerity trips to count.

She would be friends with anyone willing to take care of her two dogs Binka and Apple with her. She hung the top half of her body out of friend and senior Haley Smith’s passenger window so she could feel the wind and belted out Fifth Harmony’s “That’s My Girl.” But she wasn’t just the spontaneous girlfriend to cruise downtown Kansas City with. Her goal was to make her friends feel like time never passed.
“With friends, they often fight and they come and go with the seasons, but she was someone you could always count on,” Katie said. “It wasn’t noticeable when you first met her, [but] as soon as you met her, you knew she was always there — always 100% for everyone else.”
Since her death, each of her close friends has dedicated her last year to a lifetime of laughter, caring for her loved ones and taking every opportunity — just like Olivia — in her memory.
For Katie, this meant staying close to Alison to make sure she was doing as well as possible. Alison says Katie was one of the greatest blessings she’s had as a single mother who just lost her only child.
Katie went with Alison to get her triple ear piercings together, something Alison and Olivia wanted to do together. It wasn’t meant to replace Olivia. It should help Alison fulfill what she intended Olivia to do for Olivia now.

Jane and senior Lucy Humphrey also got tattoos to commemorate Olivia. Lucy’s sits on her wrist and reads “Love, Olivia,” copied from another card she signed in her handwriting as a child. Jane’s is also on her wrist with three stacked on top of each other to symbolize her favorite numbers and as a reminder that Olivia is watching over her.
Seven days after her death, Olivia’s close friends organized her candlelit vigil at the soccer field together, where they gave speeches filled with memories of Olivia. They got together and erected a memorial to her, using red SOLO mugs to spell her name, flowers and photos on the East fence across from 75th Street.
Their goal in all of this – and in everything they’ve done – is to remember Olivia. With East, in the community and in their hearts.
“The way I’ve dealt with it is I still tell myself she’s here one way or another,” Katie said. “I told her mom that, but I feel like [Olivia] messes with me sometimes.”

Haley breathes a sigh of relief when she sees the Instagram photos of girls hanging out of a car window in the wind – Olivia. Lucy grins as she drives down Main Street, memories of the time they ate sushi before they went to the homecoming reunion together sophomores – Olivia.
Olivia’s former East Educational mentor, Tammy Fryer, said Olivia was one of the most expressive students she has ever worked with. Referred to as her “school mom” by Olivia, Tammy became very close over the three years they worked together – she was one of the first people to reach out to Olivia about her fears and problems at school.
Olivia adored and cherished Tammy immensely, Alison said. Olivia gave Easter and Christmas gifts annually, complete with lettered cards, candles and gift cards – anything she could find to show her love.
“She was very quiet in class and seemed very shy, but when they pulled her out of class,” Tammy said. “She really had a bubbly personality, she was really expressive [and] making her opinions known.”
Olivia’s loved ones have all heartily mourned the loss of their friend throughout the year and encouraged all of East to remember her and to remember that sometimes death comes unexpectedly and no teenager is ever ready for that shock. Alison still isn’t sure what the best way to honor Olivia is, but her close friends are hoping the Class of 2022 will pass with thoughts and prayers on her. They’ll all be scattered across the field thinking of one thing on graduation day – Olivia. About how she taught Isabella openness and freedom and Jane patience and relaxation. How she taught Katie to laugh in every situation, Haley to stand up for what she believes in, and Lucy the confidence and sociability that even she struggled with. And of course when she thinks of her fiery auburn hair walking that stage and taking her next steps to Santa Barbara.
But most importantly, Alison and Olivia’s friends want to live life just as lovingly and carefree as Olivia. They want people to live in memory of who she was and hope seniors will remember to appreciate their “lasts” – something Olivia didn’t have.
“If you’re thinking of reaching out to an old friend, current friend or whatever, just do it,” Jane said. “Don’t look at someone and think, ‘Oh, I like their shoes,’ but compliment them. At best, you’ll rekindle an old friendship and meet up with someone you’ve missed. You don’t lose someone who feels like you should have said something.”
