Peter Colbert has been drawing and painting all his life. He won various awards as a child in Toronto and later several in the fields of graphic design, illustration and fine arts. His work is internationally known and sold worldwide.
Colbert is a graduate of Humber College and received a scholarship to the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada. After learning the basics of excellent drafting and spending years in graphic design and illustration to hone his skills, he devoted himself to making his art his own.
In each of his paintings he sees an opportunity to create something he is passionate about using his skills with concepts, composition, color and craftsmanship. While many of his paintings are representational, others are abstract, where he allows his subconscious to take over as he uses various implements to apply paint to the canvas, using layers or glazes to maximum effect.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My personal journey with art has been very rewarding; Looking back at what I did 30 years ago, I’ve taken my innate ability to draw, embellished it, but hopefully kept the freshness and spontaneity I’ve always treasured. Mixing paint, applying paint and how these relate to each other is at the core of what I have been working on and learning about over the past decade. Reducing things to their simplest form is a difficult thing – depicting the heart, the energy of a subject – but it’s something I focus on.
My art is my passion – and an endless journey.
THE ARTIST
Originally from Vancouver, BC, Peter Colbert has lived most of his life in Toronto. He received his Diploma in Graphic Design from Humber College and won a scholarship to OCAD in Toronto, where he studied Art and Illustration for a further 2 years. His career as a commercial artist consisted of developing concepts, designing, rendering with pens and markers, and illustrating with ink, watercolors, and acrylics. At this stage in his life, Peter recognized the value of presenting unique and compelling ideas that were brought to life with passion and flair.
Peter transitioned to a full-time career in the visual arts in 2006. His work has evolved over time but has always involved a significant amount of experimentation with tools, techniques and mediums. He likes to think of himself as obsessed with the use of color. Regarding his studies of the human figure, he has attended and taught a variety of life drawing courses for many years.
Peter has received awards as a designer, illustrator and visual artist. His work is available in galleries in Canada and the United States and is collected worldwide. He is the president of his local Toastmasters International chapter and lives in Ottawa with his family.
