Peter Gardner[2] Ostrum was born on November 1, 1957 in Dallas[3][4] to Dean Gardner Ostrum (1922–2014) and Sarepta Mabel (née Pierpont;[5] 1922–2021).[6 ] He is the youngest of four children.[5] Ostrum lived in Cleveland—a city where he was described by MSNBC as a native—from the age of twelve,[3] and later attended North Hunterdon Regional High School in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.[7]
Ostrum married Loretta M. Lepkowski in 1987 or 1988. The couple have two children, Helenka and Leif, the latter following his father onto the stage as a leading man in several South Lewis Central School musicals. Ostrum and his wife were still living in Glenfield, New York as of 2021.[6]

Ostrum was in the sixth grade performing at the Cleveland Play House Children’s Theater when he was noticed by talent agents searching nationwide for an actor to play Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The agents took Polaroid photos of Ostrum and taped him reading the original novel, then returned to New York. Two months later, Ostrum was called to New York for a screen test singing “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,”[2] and a month later he was contacted and given ten days to prepare for filming. [9] ] Ostrum left for Munich on August 10, 1970.[5]
Peter was a kid who played – he wasn’t a child actor. He had none of the obvious techniques, tricks or airs that child actors on television had and still have. He was real, and his sincerity as a person shines through in his performance. He was an extremely intelligent boy who was both confident and adept at what he did. In 2000, Ostrum recalled that filming Willy Wonka in Munich was “like being an exchange student for five months”. Fond memories of his five months in West Germany included watching the construction of the Olympic Park for the 1972 Summer Olympics and working with Gene Wilder and Jack Albertson. As Ostrum had never worked in film before, Wilder took it upon himself to introduce the young actor to the business. Ostrum later described Wilder as a quirky but gentle gentleman who “treated people with respect and dignity”. Such was the bond that developed between the two actors that, although they never saw each other again after filming Wonka, Ostrum described Wilder’s death in 2016 as “like the loss of a parent.”[10]
Ostrum was tutored on set for three hours a day, but sometimes only for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Although he had been assured at his audition that his singing would likely be cut and dubbed, it was Ostrum’s own singing voice that made it to the screen – albeit significantly abridged.[1] In a 2011 interview, Ostrum told the story of how director Mel Stuart gifted him a flap from the film, and later asked him how he got it because he forgot he had it; it is Ostrum’s only souvenir from the set.[11]
After completing filming on Willy Wonka, the then 13-year-old Ostrum[9] turned down David L. Wolper’s offer for a three-film contract. The teenager confided in Frawley Becker, his Willy Wonka dialogue coach, that he turned down the contract to “retain the freedom to choose what he acts out and in what picture”. (Ostrum and Becker remained friends until at least 1996.)[5] In January 2018, Ostrum said he sometimes misses acting — if not its hurried-and-waiting nature — but feels he’s sidestepped the transition from childhood . to the adult actor.[8]

In his final year, Ostrum was in the film class and turned back to theater and acting at the interest of one of his teachers. After auditioning for several roles but not landing[12] (including Alan Strang[5] in Equus on Broadway), Ostrum decided not to pursue it further.[12] After leaving his short film career behind, Ostrum turned down reporters and interviews, preferring not to speak on the subject;[9] “I wanted people to judge me for who I am, not what I’ve done .”[13] For a time, Ostrum even lied, telling people that his brother was in the film and not him.[3] It was years after Ostrum moved to Lowville before he told anyone there of his former glory; even his wife Loretta was unaware of his role until he warned her about it just before she met his mother.[1]
Once a year since 1990, on the last day of school as a treat, Ostrum has spoken to students at Lowville Academy about his experiences with Willy Wonka and his work in veterinary medicine.[3] The students mostly ask about the film’s special effects, and Ostrum describes to them “what happened to Veruca, how Violet exploded like a blueberry, how Charlie flew with Grandpa Joe, all those kinds of questions.”[1] Ostrum does too accepted an invitation to perform at the 2018 Snowtown Film Festival in Watertown, New York and answer questions from the audience after a screening of the film; “It’s in my backyard — it’s become a popular January event and I love supporting local events.” Ostrum said of the 2018 event that he enjoyed rewatching the film and that people gave him ” great questions.”[8] Ostrum has been called “the most famous man in Lowville,” where the local video store has twice published his VHS copy of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.[3]
Leading up to the 2005 release of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ostrum garnered a flurry of attention, including seeing the film in New York City with NPR and being named to VH1’s list of “100 Greatest Child Stars” ( on 78.) .[3] In the new film, Ostrum quoted Wonka actress Julie Dawn Cole as saying, “It’s like going back to a house that you once lived in and it’s been redecorated.” Ultimately, it was the media attention so ubiquitous that Ostrum stopped answering the phone and begged, “No more interviews, please.”[1]
