Although de Vegh has never spoken so publicly, their account of their years-long relationship didn’t come entirely out of the blue.
Descriptions of their affair were previously published in Sally Bedell Smith, editor of Vanity Fair, in her 2004 book About the Kennedys, Grace and Power.
At the time, The Texas Observer also took notice of the relationship, with Robert Sherrill writing at the time that one of the paper’s best-known editors, Bill Brammer, was dating de Vegh when he found out about her tryst with Kennedy.

De Vegh’s relationship with the man who would go on to become President was ignited one night in 1958 when Kennedy caught her eye at a political dinner before his re-election to the Senate.
As she described to PEOPLE, Kennedy blinded the room before turning his attention to her. “It was this kind of high-energy sparkle, and then it focused on me,” she says. “I think being vivacious and energetic and charming everyone everywhere is a tremendous trick. And then you make a person feel, oh, very special.”

He invited her to perform again the following week, where she says she was charmed by his humor. Their chance encounter eventually sparked a four-year affair.
Speaking to PEOPLE, de Vegh said she was “completely blown away” by Kennedy.
“I mean he was handsome. He was charming. He tried. He had men around me working for him who said, ‘Isn’t that wonderful?
Speaking to the New York Post, de Vegh said she carried the burden of the relationship like it was “a bag of dead energy” and told some journalists about it unofficially, but only recently came forward publicly.
At least one reason for her outspokenness, she said, is the new public focus on the power dynamics in relationships between older men and younger women, which is often spotlighted in the #MeToo movement.
“I eventually started questioning the culture because the culture was about empowering a great man. I mean, John Kennedy didn’t have his woman’s life all by himself. He had it thanks to many, many, many other men,” she told PEOPLE.

“My thought as I tell it now is a) I’m this old but luckily much wiser and I now have a language for my life, my feelings, my imagination,” de Vegh said in an Air Mail podcast appearance her essay. “Then I had adrenaline and that was it. When this starry person came along and beamed at me, I was like, oh god, that’s wonderful.”
De Vegh’s affair with Kennedy began in 1958 when he was married and twice her age. (What his wife knew about and accepted—or tolerated—of his many reported leaks has long been a matter of debate, but de Vegh says Jackie was never brought up in their conversations with Kennedy.)
It wasn’t a traditional relationship by any means, she admitted. “He never brought me flowers … but I was always treated courteously,” she told PEOPLE.
Still, de Vegh believed it was true love.
“I thought I was madly in love,” she said.
However, Kennedy was “very conscientious. He never said, ‘I love you.’ I thought it was a love affair.”
In the end, their relationship was “not a romantic story,” she wrote in her essay. Instead, it taught her difficult lessons about her worth and identity, and she said it took “years to recover” — “almost as many years” as it took her to tell her story.
Her relationship with Kennedy changed the course of her entire life, de Vegh wrote, and the two became strained as he rose to political influence.
However, she remained in love, eventually dropping out of graduate school and moving to Washington, D.C. after he was elected president in 1960.
There she landed a position as a research associate with the National Security Council—a position she later learned Kennedy had arranged for her.
“I was focused on my affair and on the other hand I had a serious job and I went to glamorous parties and that was very nice,” she told PEOPLE. “I mean, it still seemed like a really good life.”
