About Our Founder – Robert W. Plaster

Robert W. Plaster was born during the Great Depression and grew up in the small town of Neosho in southwest Missouri. Times were tough and he started working as a young boy to support the family. He worked at a local grocery store and ran a paper route at Camp Crowder and established a strong work ethic. From a young age, his mother instilled in him the importance of positive thinking. She taught him that “can’t never could,” a philosophy he carried and applied throughout his life.

After high school, Mr. Plaster attended Joplin Junior College to earn a degree in accounting. After three semesters, he could no longer afford the tuition fees and instead went to work full-time. Among other jobs, he worked for the US Treasury Department and then for a liquid propane company before founding his own liquid gas company, Empire Gas Corporation, in 1963. Empire Gas quickly became one of the largest liquefied petroleum gas retailers in the United States and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Following the sale of Empire Gas in 1996, Mr. Plaster formed Evergreen Investments, LLC, which invests in numerous companies. To this end, in 1983 he founded the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, dedicated to supporting students by funding projects for colleges and universities.
