At the age of 13 he started recording his own music.[4]

NME has described his style as “psychedelic bedroom pop”,[5] while IQ considers it “genre-bending”.[6]

Early life[edit]

Sven Gamsky was born on June 23, 1992 in Oakland, California and grew up in Moraga, California. He is the youngest of three sons of Dr. Tom and Berit (Fuglsang) Gamsky and has two older brothers, Nate and Sam. Sven started playing the guitar in middle school.

All of the Gamsky brothers became Eagle Scouts. Sven was a member of Moraga Boy Scout Troop 212, where his Eagle Scout service project included the transformation of a garden area at Donald L. Rheem Elementary School in Moraga. The East Bay Times reported of his success at Eagle Scout in 2010 that “Sven plans to travel and volunteer after high school and eventually study psychology in college”.

Sven Gamsky attended Campolindo High School in Moraga, California. He graduated in 2010. During his school days he played guitar and bass in the band Shoot for Roots. Early in her senior year, “Shoot for Roots” won a Battle of the Bands competition hosted by the Lamorinda Teen Center. They had originally struck a tie with a band called IceBox Business from rival high school Miramonte High School, but Campolindo High fans broke the tie by cheering Gamsky’s band louder with a 116-decibel recording. [7] After high school, Gamsky made money teaching guitar in the Oakland area and playing with the band Feed Me Jack at jazz clubs, festivals, and orchestra halls. He graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2015 with a music major with a concentration in classical guitar and a minor in electronic music.

In the same interview, Gamsky also goes on to say that the cancellation of his 2020 tour due to Covid-19 was the best thing that could have happened to his debut album, as it allowed him to “really double it down and find out[15]”. .

Still Woozy’s debut album is an alt-pop catharsis

In a recent interview about the release of his latest album, Still Woozy commented: “This album shows me what an album could be. Each song expresses a different part of my palette, something I couldn’t do if I was just putting out single after single.” And find out that he did.

In August, Portland-based musician Still Woozy (born Sven Gamsky) released his debut album, If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is. Still Woozy burst onto the music scene in 2017 with a string of lo-fi alt-pop singles, including his most notable “Goodie Bag.” As his popularity continued to grow, Woozy performed at numerous festivals including Coachella and Lollapalooza. His songs have appeared in the 2018 film The After Party, the FIFA 21 soundtrack.

This first full-length album was “super cathartic” for Woozy as he dealt with the mental health issues of the pandemic. Along with his variety of styles, he decided to make this album stand out with a new cover style in which Woozy is photographed climbing out of a hole in the desert. His previous singles and EPs all had art from his fiancée, and he claimed to “want some kind of distinction between the single art and the (album) cover art”.

The album opens with “Woof,” a song that Woozy described in an interview with Tone Deaf as “the rockiest [he] ever made.” The Strokes-esque song “Reptilia” challenges the listener to experience life in his shoes, claiming that they “wouldn’t last a day in [his] mind”. The music video, released on the same day as the album, embodies the chaotic disorder that Woozy claims fills his spirit.

The next song, released as a single earlier this year, “Rocky” perfectly captures the power of dreams with a more lullaby-like beat. Woozy says, “I always think of you needing me/when I’m dozing off.” He falls asleep to the memories of his relationship reduced to love, wants and needs rather than the complexities of his waking life.

Next is “That’s Life”. The music video for this song, released at the end of June, makes a humorous reference to the difficulties of the past year. Each scene depicts different historical moments across the centuries when Woozy faces immense struggles, reminding the viewer to question the idealism of the past. He says, “I want to go back,” alluding to the emotions many felt as the pandemic raged.

The next few songs embody the ups and downs of a relationship. Another love song from the album, “Woopie”, describes the shock of reciprocated love. The song is filled with questions as the singer wonders why his love keeps coming back to him. Similarly, “Get By” highlights the difficulties of a relationship, which are then soothed by simple expressions of caring, such as making one’s partner laugh. And “Before You Were Mine” captures the transition from a life without one’s partner to a life of love for that individual. Again, as with “Woopie,” there’s a distinct fear of the relationship ending.

Deviating from the upbeat sounds of its predecessors, “Drake” is much more interpersonal and moody. Woozy repeats the lines “All I want is to be happy” and “All I want is to laugh” several times in the song’s opening. It appears to be part of Woozy’s experiences during the pandemic and struggle to keep going.

The earliest single from the 2020 album “Window” shows a relationship full of conflicts. Woozy proclaims, “If I got one thing right, it was you and I/But I’ll go in through the window so no one sees.” While loving this person, he struggles with something not revealed in the song , which keeps him from fully expressing the relationship. Unlike the spontaneous love that Woozy describes in the earlier songs, “Kenny” is a gentler piece that tells of the end of a relationship. He says in a tone closer to a sob, “Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine / I’ll pull myself together this time.” It’s like he’s begging that person not to be the one fixing him. But the next song, “Get Down,” doesn’t seem to have translated those lessons about his relationship: “She’s gonna break me/But I don’t give a dams now.” “All Along” presents itself as a kind of power grab, especially compared to “Get Down”. It’s a liberating song that lets the singer breathe again. Featuring hip-hop beats like “One Dance” inspired by Drake singles, “WTF” tells the story of trying to find simple love. And the album’s final song, “These Days,” is a lot smoother than the earlier songs. It’s hopeful, a reminder that even when things go wrong, “these days/they go on”. Overall, Woozy’s album embodies the possibilities of the young musician’s career. With such a variety of musical styles and creative tracks, Still Woozy seems to have a lot more up his sleeve than the singles we know him as.
