Vashti Murphy McKenzie is Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. McKenzie is the first woman elected bishop in the history of the denomination. She is also the national chaplain of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the granddaughter of Delta founder Vashti Turley Murphy.

Vashti Murphy McKenzie (born May 28, 1947) is a retired bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the author of six books. In 2000, McKenzie became the first woman in the history of the denomination to be elected bishop.[1][2][3][4] She later served as President of the Council of Bishops, becoming the first woman to serve as titular superior of the DMD Church.[5]
Early life and education[edit]
Vashti was born on May 28, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the daughter of Samuel Edward Smith and Ida Murphy Smith Peters.[6] She was named for her maternal grandmother, Vashti Turley Murphy,[7] who was one of 22 women who founded the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in 1913 as an undergraduate at Howard University.[8]
McKenzie’s maternal grandfather, Carl J. Murphy, was the publisher and editor-in-chief of the Baltimore Afro-American, a black newspaper founded by his father, John H. Murphy, Sr.[9] The newspaper was a family business, and Murphy’s five daughters were involved as publishers, editors, journalists, and board members. McKenzie began writing for the publication at an early age; She recalls that her first journalistic opportunity was writing obituaries at the age of 16.[10]
McKenzie attended high school at Eastern High School, an all-female public high school in Baltimore City. She was one of only six black students in the school,[6] which was abolished following the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision. McKenzie graduated from Eastern High in 1965.[6]
After graduating high school, McKenzie spent a summer studying at the Blair School of Journalism before enrolling at Morgan State University, where she majored in history. In her junior year, she left school to marry Stan McKenzie, who played for the Baltimore Bullets of the NBA. The couple moved to Arizona when Stan McKenzie was traded to the Phoenix Suns. The McKenzies later moved back to Baltimore. Vashti McKenzie went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Maryland.[11]

After graduating, McKenzie pursued journalism as a career. She worked at WYCB Radio and hosted an R&B show. She was later promoted to station manager, a position few women held at the time. She remained in broadcasting for several years. She also wrote a column for the African-American called “The McKenzie Report”.[6]
However, she felt called to service and began studying at the Howard University School of Divinity, where she received a Masters of Divinity. She was ordained an itinerant deacon in 1981 and a full minister in 1984. She later received her PhD from United Theological Seminary in Ohio.
McKenzie’s first pastorate was at Oak Street AME Church in Baltimore. In 2010, she became the first woman to serve as pastor at Payne Memorial AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland.[12] During the ten years she served in this role, she contributed to the growth of the Church and the expansion of her ministry in the community.[11] In 1996, she offered the closing prayer on the first night of the Democratic National Convention.[11] In 1998, Ebony named McKenzie one of the “15 Greatest Black Woman Preachers” in the United States.[13] She took first place in the voting, along with Rev. Prathia Hall and Rev. Carolyn Knight.
In 2000, McKenzie made the decision to run for election as bishop of her denomination. As a first-time candidate, McKenzie had to explain to church leaders and members why she qualified to be the first bishop. In an interview for a 2019 Christian Post article, she noted that running for bishop meant “helping people take a look at your record of service in your pastorate. The kind of things you’ve done,” she explained, “To be able to spread that message, to be able to show people that I’m not just a woman, that I’ve had experiences, that I am qualified, and to take a look at how God has blessed our ministry as an indication of what we can do for the future.’”[14]
In the election there were 42 candidates for the episcopate, including two women. Running alongside McKenzie was Rev. Carolyn Tyler Guidry, the first woman to serve as presiding elder in the AME. (Guidry was later elected bishop in 2004.) McKenzie received the second highest number of votes when the general council of the DAME church voted at the national convention in Cincinnati in July. In her acceptance speech, she is quoted as saying, “Because of God’s favor the stained-glass ceiling was pierced and broken.”[11] She was ordained the 117th bishop in the AME Church and was the first woman to be elevated to the episcopacy .[12][15]
In her first office as bishop, she was called to serve in the 18th District, which has oversight of DMD churches in Africa, primarily in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Swaziland.[16] She later served as Prelate Prelate for the 13th District AME, covering Tennessee and Kentucky. While in that capacity, she was invited by President Barack Obama to join the Inaugural Presidential Advisory Council on Faith and Neighborhood Partnerships at the White House.[17] In 2012 she moved to the Tenth Episcopal District in Texas, where she still presides.[18][19]
In 2005 she became the nominal head of the AME church and once again made history, this time as the first woman to lead the denomination.[20] She hosted the 2016 AME General Conference.[21]
She has written several books on leadership for women in ministry, including Not Without A Struggle and Strength in the Struggle.[22] She is also the national chaplain of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie is the 117th elected and ordained bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her historic election in 2000 marks the first time in the more than 200-year history of the DAME Church that a woman has been elected bishop. The firsts continue as she served as the first woman President of the Council of Bishops, Chair of the General Conference Commission and the first female host of the 49th Session of the DMD Church General Conference in June 2012 with more than 30,000. her husband, dr. Stanley McKenzie, serves with her as Episcopal Supervisor.
She is currently honored to serve as Presiding Prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, where she will lead all DAM churches throughout the state of Texas. She carries out spiritual and administrative tasks for over 200 churches. These include Paul Quinn College, a 140-year-old historically black liberal arts college, where she serves as vice chair. Over the past four years, $8.5 million has been raised from philanthropic donors to support the Work College program, We Over Me Farm and a new residential home. She is also the Founder and Chair of 10th Future Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to students and grants for local church and community service projects. The 10th Annual Future Inc. Golf Tournament has raised over $200,000 for special causes in Texas.
Bishop McKenzie was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the Inaugural Presidential Advisory Council on the White House’s Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Recently, at the invitation of President Obama, she was invited to preach at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast.

It contains 22 pearls of wisdom sermons by nationally known preachers who happen to be women.
