American aviator and Mercury 13 astronaut (born 1939)

Mary Wallace Funk (born February 1, 1939) is an American aviator, commercial astronaut[1][2] and goodwill ambassador. She was the first female aviation safety investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, the first female civilian flight instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the first female inspector for the Federal Aviation Agency, as well as one of the Mercury 13. [3] [4]

Funk became the oldest person to fly in space on July 20, 2021 at the age of 82. He flew on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft during its suborbital flight, breaking a record John Glenn had held for 23 years.[5] Her record would stand until later that year when William Shatner’s flight took place on October 13; Shatner was 90 years old at the time. Funk continues to hold the record for the oldest woman to have traveled to space.

Along with Gene Nora Jessen, Funk is one of the last two surviving members of the Mercury 13 group.[6] She is also the only one of the thirteen to have traveled into space.

Early life[edit]

Funk was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1939[7] and grew up in Taos, New Mexico. Her parents owned a variety store. The family had a collection of artworks by artists from the Taos Artists’ Colony, as the artists traded artworks to pay their debts in the shop.[3]

As a child, Funk was fascinated by airplanes. When she was one year old, her parents took her to an airport near where she lived in New Mexico, and she got up close and personal with a Douglas DC-3, an early airliner. “I go straight to the wheel and try to spin the nut,” she says. “Mother said, ‘She’ll fly.'”[4][8] She became interested in mechanics and built model airplanes and ships.[9] At the age of seven she was making airplanes out of balsa wood.[4] She had her first flying lesson at the age of nine.[4]

Funk was also an accomplished outdoor woman who spent time biking, horseback riding, skiing, hunting, and fishing. At age 14, she became a skilled marksman and received the Distinguished Rifleman’s Award. The National Rifle Association sent their incredible shooting results to President Dwight Eisenhower, and he wrote back to her.[4] At the same time, she represented the Southwest United States as the top female skier, slalom and downhill race in United States competition.

Funk became a member of the “Flying Susies” and placed first in their class of 24 aviators.[10] She graduated in 1958 with her pilot’s license and an associate of arts degree.[9]

Funk then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Oklahoma State University. While at OSU, Funk was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega, Gamma Epsilon chapter. Funk was primarily drawn to OSU by its famous “Flying Aggies” program.[4] At OSU, Funk earned a large number of aviation certifications and ratings, including her commercial, single-engine land, multi-engine land, single-engine sea, instrument, flight instructor, and all ground instructor ratings. Funk was elected officer of the “Flying Aggies” and flew for them at the International Collegiate Air Meets. She received the Outstanding Female Pilot, Flying Aggie Top Pilot and Alfred Alder Memorial Trophy two years in a row.[9]

In 1971, Funk received flight inspector certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), becoming the first woman to complete the FAA’s General Aviation Operations Inspector Academy course, which covers pilot certification and flight testing procedures, accident and violation handling. 12][15] She served as a field examiner with the FAA for four years, the first woman to do so. In 1973, she was promoted to the FAA SWAP (Systems Worthiness Analysis Program) as a specialist, the first woman in the United States to hold the position. In late November 1973, Wally re-entered the FAA Academy to take courses for air taxi, charter and aircraft rental companies.

In 1974, Funk was hired by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as the first female aviation safety investigator.[12] Funk examined 450 accidents, ranging from a probable mob attack to a fatal accident in a morgue.[13] She made the discovery that people who die in light aircraft crashes often have their jewelry, shoes and clothing stripped from the impact.[3]

At the same time, Funk took part in many air races.[13][14] She finished eighth in the 25th Annual Powder Puff Derby race, sixth in the Pacific Air Race, and eighth in the Palms to Pines Air Race.
