Born and raised in East Harlem in Upper Manhattan, New York City, Martinez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, was one of two children raised by his single mother. He attended a Roman Catholic school, Automotive Mechanical High School, and Julia Richman High School before dropping out in his sophomore year. [citation required] [3]
Martinez began selling drugs at the age of 13 in East Harlem. When he met West Side Harlem drug dealer Azie Faison,[4] Martinez began to climb up the Harlem drug dealer chain, eventually becoming one of the largest drug dealers in the city.[5]
Martinez later moved to Washington, D.C. to expand operations, where he quickly became involved with the city’s underworld and increased his drug activities. He met Wayne ‘Silk’ Perry, a notorious mobster and D.C. enforcer who would later become his bodyguard and hitman.[6]

On November 7, 1991, Martinez was arrested in Washington, DC for drug sales. He was charged with conspiracy to murder, various drug offenses and 14 counts of murder, including the murders of D.C. drug dealer Michael Anthony Salters aka Fray[7] and Brooklyn drug dealer Demencio Benson[8].
Faced with the possibility of either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole, Martinez became a whistleblower and testified against members of his organization.[9] Martinez was sentenced to 35 years in prison for testifying against Perry (who received five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole).[10][11]
