On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, Joyce Rodgers, a prominent evangelist for Church Of God In Christ Inc., died at the age of 65. She reportedly got her wings and “flew” after a season of suffering from pancreatic cancer. Home.” She has fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Now, according to 2 Timothy 4:7-8, “the crown of righteousness is ready for her, which the Lord, the just Judge, hath in him day.”

Rodgers died just days after she was appointed head of the first ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Department of Women’s Texas Northeast First Ecclesiastical. The minister was “installed, appointed and crowned” by General Supervisor Mother Barbara McCoo Lewis on Monday, May 17, 2021. Before taking on this new role, Rodgers served as chair and administrative facilitator of the International Women’s Division.

Rodgers described herself as a wounded healer. She credited her greatest anchor of faith and childhood influence to her grandmother—her mother’s mother, Bessie Currie—whom friends and family affectionately call Big Mama. Rodgers lived for most of her childhood with her late grandmother, who she described as “the spiritual voice of the community” and “the quintessential faith-shifter.” Offshoots of Big Mama’s influence include Rodger’s own mother, Rosie Allen, who is active in the ministry in her East Texas church, and two brothers who grew up under Big Mama’s wing to become COGIC pastors. She said:

God sent me to say to the wounded people I meet that whatever their hurts, He will heal – physical, emotional, spiritual. It’s never about the person now, it’s about understanding how they got to where they are and that this is not the end product… that God not only sees us but is with us. You lived with Big Mama, did church and evangelism. My life revolved around the Church and I was always the youngest person to read the scriptures at the revivals, even if I couldn’t read very well.

Today, the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) is the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States. In 1907, Charles Harrison Mason founded the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) after being cast out by his Baptist congregation. Mason was a member of the late 19th century holiness movement. In 1906 he took part in the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles. After returning to Tennessee, he began teaching the message of Pentecostal holiness. However, Charles Price Jones and J.A. Jeter of the Holiness movement disagreed with Mason’s teachings on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. In 1915 Jones changed the name of his COGIC church to the Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A.

At a conference in Memphis, Tennessee, Mason reorganized the Church of God in Christ as a holiness Pentecostal church. COGIC’s headquarters are in Mason Temple, Memphis. It is also the site of Martin Luther King’s final sermon, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” delivered the day before his assassination.

Armed with over 20 years of preaching the gospel, acclaimed author, coach and philanthropist Evangelist Rodgers has radically impacted the lives of millions of believers. Rodgers became known as “the cheerleader for the Lord” and “the giant slayer” during her time on the job. Prior to her recent promotion, Rodgers served as chair and administrative liaison for the International Women’s Division. She fought a good fight and left a legacy that will continue to influence many.

From birth to reward, the final arrangements for Rodgers are as follows: Tuesday, June 1, 2021: Public viewing from 12pm to 6pm. at the Rising Star Church of God In Christ at 601 S Tyler St. in Gladewater, TX 75647. Wednesday, June 2, 2021: Public viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Saintsville Church of God In Christ at 2200 S Marsalis Ave in Dallas, TX 75216. A court celebration at 7 p.m. follows in the same place. Thursday, June 3, 2021: Public viewing from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. with the National Homegoing Celebration Service beginning immediately after. Both take place at The Potter’s House at 6777 W. Kiest Blvd Dallas, TX 75236.

As one of COGIC’s most compelling speakers, Rodgers made femininity an important part of her brand. Embraced by a denomination that shattered the traditional boundaries that had previously defined front-row evangelists as male players, she was deliberately feminine in dress and demeanor. Rodgers kept her family out of the spotlight, letting fans and viewers focus only on her ministry.

Most important to her ministry was the connection between the young woman and her vital importance to the fabric of the church. Born and raised in Gladewater, Texas, she was a third generation daughter of the Church Of God In Christ. Raised in the COGIC Reformation, this giant slayer will be remembered as an important thread within the church at large. Gone but not forgotten, evangelist Joyce L. Rodgers fought a good fight.
