Plymouth City Commissioner Alanna Maguire on Why She’s Married to Local Government (and Dana Nessel)
local government affairs. Who sits on your city commission matters because they’re the people who make the decisions closest to your doorstep. Municipal racing doesn’t get the breathless horse racing coverage that, for example, a presidential election has. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful.
Alanna Maguire was definitely paying attention.
Maguire, 36, won one of four open Plymouth City Commission seats on Election Day. While only four candidates ran for the four seats, the top three voters would be elected to four-year terms and the last candidate to a two-year term. Maguire was elected for a four-year term.
“This is where really local decisions are made that really impact you and your neighborhood,” Maguire tells Pride Source. “It’s important to make your voice heard and to understand and help shape the community you live in.”
Maguire says she has championed issues that are important to her, such as protecting the environment and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. “My day job is that I’m a finance manager for a renewable energy company,” she says. “I want there to be a lot more focus on green space development, environmental sustainability practices and composting – things we can do locally.”
Maguire attributes her electoral success to her long-standing ties to the city. “I’m a lifelong resident of Plymouth, so I have really strong roots in the community,” says Maguire. Maguire also has strong roots in the LGBTQ+ community. She is President of Fair Michigan, a group that advocates for the legal protection of LGBTQ+ people. She is also the wife of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
“[Plymouth is] actually a much more progressive community than I think people might believe,” she says, citing a human rights law passed in 2014 that includes protections for LGBTQ people. “I felt my family belonged here; We are accepted,” she says. “We are a welcoming community. We want people to feel safe and accepted.”
Maguire and Nessel are parents to 18-year-old twin sons Zach and Alex, who attend Michigan State University. Maguire says she and Nessel have worked to instill “compassion and empathy” in their sons. “I think that’s how Dana approached her office and cared for other people, especially people who were marginalized,” she says, adding that they also value “integrity and honesty” in their family.
Because Nessel is such a prominent public figure, the current era of political polarization and republican extremism has been difficult for her family. Nessel has received death threats and Maguire herself has been the target of threats and rude comments.
“It’s hard to get used to,” she says. “It’s one thing to disagree with someone and make it about the political disagreement,” even going so far as to call someone an idiot for holding that position. “But to say, ‘I think you’re an idiot and I want to kill you or harm your family,’ is a very scary thing.”
She says she believes her sons will be safer in college because “people know where we live.”
“I’m concerned for the safety of my entire family and I wish that no matter how angry you are about something, you take a step back and try to put yourself in our shoes and think about how it feels to live like this.” , she adds . “It’s not pleasant – I can tell you that.”
Nevertheless, she supports Nessel in her role. “First, I try to remind them that I’m very proud of them,” she says. “I think her heart is always in the right place and in the federal prosecutor’s office she is always concerned about how best to run the state.”
Similarly, recently sworn-in Maguire reflects on how best to run Plymouth and says the negative political climate hasn’t stopped her from running. In fact, the timing finally felt right. “I thought about it for a couple of years, and there were always things that got in my way,” she says. “This time I felt like I could put in the time, energy and effort to make it a success.”
Maguire doesn’t just want to have a seat on the commission, she wants to actually represent Plymouth residents and encourage people to take an active part in their city government.
“[The City Commission meets] every other Monday at City Hall … and there’s always a section for citizen comments,” she says. “It gives you a say in where you live and sets the direction of your community, and it helps us when people participate to know what’s important to our residents.”
Maguire acknowledges that civic engagement is often fueled by government failure to meet the needs of its residents. “People start paying attention on the spot if they are unhappy with something. Then people come to the meetings,” she says, complaining about things like garbage collection. “When your city runs smoothly, you take it for granted.”
Overall, she says, Plymouth seems generally very happy with the city government, a sign “that things are going well in the city”.
The Commission is currently concentrating on long-term planning. “We formulate in writing on paper what our community should look like in the next five years and how we will do it.”
Maguire was raised in Plymouth with her mother, Mary Maguire, her father, Raymond, and two younger brothers, Evin and Ross. Her mother was on the board of the local library for many years and is the founder and current President of the Plymouth Democratic Club.
“She was a huge inspiration to me growing up,” Maguire says, noting that her mother taught her “how to work for the community, how to get involved in causes that are important to me, and stuff like that .”
Mary is also on the Fair Michigan board of directors and works with the National Marriage Challenge, the nonprofit formed to cover the legal costs of DeBoer v. Snyder, the Michigan marriage equality case that made it to the Supreme Court made part of Obergefell v. Hodges, the June 26, 2015 decision that made marriage equality a nationwide reality.
In fact, Maguire and Nessel met while working together on the DeBoer case, Nessel as one of the lead counsel and Maguire as the project manager. “It’s actually a nice way to meet,” says Maguire. “I think part of what I love about my relationship with Dana is that we work really well together and are very supportive of each other. And what we achieve, we create together.”
Maguire and Nessel became engaged on April 28, 2015, the date of Obergefell’s hearing. “She asked me to marry her after she appeared in the Supreme Court after the hearing,” Maguire recalls. “That’s a pretty cool story.”
Another cool story is the order in which the family met Maguire Nessel. “My wife met both of my parents before she even knew me, which is pretty funny,” says Maguire. Nessel worked with Raymond Maguire when the two were both Wayne County prosecutors and also when Nessel was in private practice.
“She actually met my mom because she was looking for community support for the DeBoer vs. Snyder case, and she learned there was a Plymouth Democratic Club,” Maguire recalls. “She went to one of our club meetings and introduced herself to my mom and told her what she was doing with the legal case.”
Mary Maguire organized support for the case and helped run a fundraiser at Affirmations that raised over $20,000.
Maguire remembers the day of the Obergefell decision. “It was just such a happy occasion when the decision was made in June 2015,” she says. “I’ve never seen so many people so happy.” Being a part of it is “so incredible,” she says. “Marriage isn’t just a pretty piece of paper — it’s so much more than that.”
So when asked what her most prized possession is, she says it’s her marriage certificate. “Because I know how hard and how long we had to fight for it,” she says. “Everything it symbolizes. I had it framed. It hangs in my office.”
