American political activist and convicted murderer

Edward Bernard Peter Buck (née Buckmelter; born August 24, 1954) is a United States convicted felon and businessman. A former model and actor, he made a significant amount of money operating and selling data services company Gopher Courier. He became involved in politics after Evan Mecham was elected governor of Arizona in 1986; Buck, an Arizona resident, led efforts to remove him from office, accusing him of racism and corruption. The experience prompted Buck to change his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat, and he has donated heavily to Democratic politicians since. In 2007, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for West Hollywood, California City Council.

Two African-American men, the first in 2017 and the second in 2019, were found dead at Buck’s West Hollywood home, later determined to be the result of a drug overdose. Multiple reports have suggested that in the past Buck had brought African American men to his home where he reportedly injected them with high doses of crystal methamphetamine for sexual gratification.[1] He drugged the men and then sexually assaulted them while they were unconscious or motionless.[2]

In January 2019, a coalition of 50 civil rights organizations called on law enforcement to investigate the matter. On September 17, 2019, Buck was arrested and charged with causing three counts of serious injury, administering methamphetamine and running a drug house. He was convicted in 2021 on nine counts of federal charges; On April 14, 2022, Buck was sentenced to 30 years in prison.[2]

Early life[edit]

Edward Bernard Peter Buckmelter was born in Steubenville, Ohio.[3][4] He grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was educated at North High School and graduated from Phoenix College.

Career [edit]

Buck began his career as a model in Europe,[4][5] where he also acted in television commercials and two films.[3] He worked for a friend’s company, Rapid Information Services, before buying it out of bankruptcy for $250,000 and renaming it Gopher Courier. Buck became a millionaire when he sold it after five years.[4]

Buck led the 1987 campaign to impeach Arizona Republican Gov. Evan Mecham by founding the Mecham Watchdog Committee. He announced the campaign on December 21, 1986, before Mecham was even sworn in,[7] and was the “leader” of a protest on the day of Mecham’s inauguration.[8] Buck specifically highlighted Mecham’s “objection to a King’s holiday, his proposal for voluntary drug testing, and his plan to reduce state police by up to 300 officers.”[9] Buck gave out bumper stickers that read “Mecham for Ex-Governor,” and Arizona Attorney General Robert K. Corbin ruled that state employees could use them on their cars.[6] The anti-Mecham campaign “made Buck a household name in Arizona,” according to The Arizona Republic.[5] In retaliation, Buck was attacked for his homosexuality by Julian Sanders, chairman of the Arizonans for Traditional Family Values.[10][11] Buck changed his registration from Republican to Democrat in 1988.[4]

After moving to West Hollywood, California, Buck ran unsuccessfully for city council in 2007.[4] He formerly served on the steering committee of the Stonewall Democratic Club.[4][12][13] He has collectively donated more than $500,000 to political candidates and causes, almost all of which are affiliated with the Democratic Party, including donations to candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Ted Lieu, Pete Aguilar, Adam B. Schiff, and Raja Krishnamoorthi as well as the Getting Things Done PAC.[4][14]

Criminal investigations[edit]

On July 27, 2017, a young African American man named Gemmel Moore died at Buck’s home.[12][13][15] Paramedics found Moore, who had been working as an escort, naked on a mattress in the living room while a “male porn movie” was playing on television, according to a Los Angeles County coroner’s report.[15] A spokesman for the coroner’s office, Ed Winter, said Buck was at his Laurel Avenue home at the time of Moore’s death and that drug paraphernalia was recovered from the scene.[16] Police found sex toys, syringes and “clear plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine in a toolbox rolling cabinet in the living room”, 24 syringes with brown residue, five glass pipes with white residue and burn marks, a plastic straw with possible white residue, clear plastic bags with white powdery residue and a clear plastic bag containing a “piece of crystal-like substance.”[15] The death was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey declined to charge Buck on July 26, 2018. Jasmyne Cannick, a local writer, activist and political candidate who was investigating Moore’s death, criticized Lacey’s decision and wrote on Twitter that any further deaths at Ed’s home would be Lacey’s responsibility.[18]

Since Gemmel Moore’s death, multiple reports have indicated that in the past Buck has lured young black gay men to his home where he has injected them with crystal methamphetamine for sexual gratification.[18]

On January 7, 2019, another African American man, 55-year-old Timothy Michael Dean (a part-time adult film actor known professionally as Hole Hunter[19][20]), died at Buck’s home.[21] After Dean’s death, a coalition of 50 civil rights organizations released a statement urging local law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation into Buck’s role in the incident and elected officials to return any donations Buck received.[22]

Buck was arrested on September 17, 2019 and charged with triple battery, causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He is accused of injecting methamphetamine into a 37-year-old man on September 11 who survived an overdose.[23]

On September 19, 2019, a federal indictment was added by the United States for “one count of fatal methamphetamine distribution” in the death of Gemmel Moore, who died on July 27, 2017. This death was originally ruled an accidental methamphetamine overdose by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.[24][25]

On August 4, 2020, a federal grand jury indicted Buck on four additional felonies, bringing the total federal count to nine counts. Buck was due to appear in court on January 19, 2021,[26] but the date was pushed back to April 20, 2021 due to COVID-19-related considerations.[27]

On July 27, 2021, Buck was found guilty of nine federal charges, including the deaths of Gemmel Moore and Timothy Dean, running a drug den, distributing methamphetamines, and soliciting prostitutes. On April 14, 2022, Buck was sentenced to 30 years in prison.[2]

Personal life[edit]

Buck came out as gay to his parents at the age of 16.[4] In 1981[3] or 1983[4] he changed his surname from Buckmelter to Buck. He was the Grand Marshal of the 1989 International Gay Rodeo.[4][5] Buck used to live near Piestewa Peak in Phoenix, Arizona.[5] He moved to West Hollywood in 1991.[4]

Wealthy donor Ed Buck gets 30 years in prison for drugging gay men, two fatally

Wealthy political activist and Democratic donor Ed Buck has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for supplying and personally injecting methamphetamine into gay men in exchange for sex, resulting in two deaths and several other overdoses.

Buck, 67, was found guilty by a federal jury in July on all nine counts, including owning a drug store, distributing methamphetamine and luring men to travel for prostitution.

Thursday’s sentencing concludes a long saga involving Buck, who prosecutors said used his wealth and influence to exploit and exploit mostly vulnerable black men for “party and play” encounters at his West Hollywood apartment. At the encounters, Buck paid men to use drugs, injected large amounts, and performed sexual acts on them. Officials said Buck would inject methamphetamine with or without the men’s consent and sometimes when they were unconscious.

“Buck used his money and privileges to exploit the imbalances in wealth and power between him and his victims, who were homeless, destitute and/or struggling with addiction,” said Chelsea Norell, a U.S. Assistant Attorney, in a court act. “He spent thousands of dollars on drugs and partying and gaming sessions that destroyed lives and spawned insidious addictions.”

Gemmel Moore, 26, fatally overdosed at Buck’s West Hollywood home in July 2017. A second man, Timothy Dean, 55, died almost two years later in 2019 from a fatal methamphetamine overdose at Buck’s home. It wasn’t until a third man in the home twice overdosed that Buck was arrested and charged. All three men were black.

Relatives and activists had been pushing for Buck’s arrest since Moore’s death. They have said that Buck escaped criminal charges for years because of his wealth, political connections and race.

Buck, who went by the nickname “Doctor Kevorkian,” had at least 10 victims, according to court records, and sometimes drugged them while they were unconscious. One victim said he was “unable to move” after Buck injected him with a sedative. He added that later, when Buck wanted him out of his house, “became frustrated and took a chainsaw out of a closet, turned it on, and approached the victim with it.”

Prosecutors urged the judge to sentence Buck to life in prison, saying he “used people as toys and destroyed their lives just to fulfill his own sexual gratification.” Buck’s attorneys asked for a 10-year sentence instead of “sending him to death in prison.” They asked the judge to consider Buck’s drug addiction, which he allegedly developed as a result of an illness, and the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of his father and several priests.

LaTisha Nixon, Moore’s mother, said in a letter to the court that she hoped Buck would receive the maximum sentence. Nixon, a board-certified nursing assistant, said she couldn’t comfort her son the way she’s done for countless dying people.

“All I can think about is how my son died naked on a mattress with no love around him,” Nixon said. “No one to hold his hand or tell him good things.”

Buck pleaded for leniency before he was sentenced, telling the court, “I ask the court to look at my life as a whole,” he said, according to the Los Angeles Times, rather than “being the horrific caricature that the government portrayed me : a meth-fueled ax killer.”

Buck, a wealthy white man involved in gay causes and animal rights causes, has given more than $500,000 since 2000, mostly to Democratic politicians and causes.

Black LGBTQ+ activists in California have campaigned for years for Buck to be brought to justice, accusing police of ignoring their concerns and allowing Buck to continue hurting people. Buck continued to hunt down gay men after Moore’s death, even complaining about the investigation to Dean, who later died at his home.

“Buck’s lack of remorse is aptly captured in one image: while hiding in a hotel to avoid arrest over Gemmel Moore’s death, he injected Dane Brown, another young black man, with methamphetamine in a row,” Norell said.

Brown, who was homeless, moved into Buck’s apartment, where Buck frequently injected him with meth, often multiple times a day. He was hospitalized in September 2019 after Buck shot him three times with consecutive doses and put five times as much meth into his system as Moore and Dean did when they died, prosecutors said.

Brown returned to Buck’s home weeks later, where Buck again injected him with a methamphetamine overdose and refused to help him, he said.

“Brown was sitting on the couch resigning himself to the same fate as Moore and Dean when he heard his late mother call out to him, ‘Get up, Dane,'” Norell said.

He fled Buck’s house and made it to a nearby gas station, where he called for help and was taken to a hospital. His harrowing account of being resuscitated twice eventually led to Buck’s arrest.
