‘Stuntman’ Eddie Braun on attempting Evel Knievel dare — and the touching reason Charlie Sheen once wrote him a $1 million check

When it comes to death defiance in Hollywood, Eddie Braun is on top.

After meeting the legendary daredevil Evil Knievel as a child, Braun was inspired to become a professional stuntman at the age of 17. Since then he has led a great career in Hollywood spanning four decades and more. in 250 films and television series, doubling the stunt for actors such as Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Ashton Kutcher.

In 2016, Braun paid the ultimate tribute to his idol by attempting to complete a stunt that Knievel could never achieve-his 1974 attempt to fly a rocket-powered vehicle over Idaho’s Snake River Canyon. Braun’s efforts are documented in the film Stuntman produced by Dwayne Johnson, which was released last week at Disney+.

“In the’ 70s, everyone wanted to be Evel Knievel, ”Braun told us in a recent video interview (watch above). “I mean, the man is tired. He looks like a superhero rock star from Mars incarnate. Evel Knievel is everything. ”

Eddie Braun (Jason Frank Rothenberg)

When it comes to his long (long) list of Hollywood stunts and the Snake River attempt, Braun quickly dispels the myth that stuntmen are fearless or have a higher threshold for fear than the rest of us.

“I’m scared, I’m scared of a lot of things,” Braun admits. “I’m not the big adrenaline junkie without fear. And there’s nothing wrong with being scared. Hell, I’m scared all the time. It’s how someone deals with their fear that defines them as a person.

As for the actor Braun has had the best working experience since entering show business in the early ’80s, that’s easy. This is Charlie Sheen, whom Braun has doubled over for 30 years and he considers one of his closest friends.

However, Sheen preferred Braun to retire long ago.

Braun told a story about their work together in the 1990 thriller The Rookie, which Sheen co -directed with Clint Eastwood, who also directed.

“After five months of being beaten, blown up, whatever in that movie, on the last day of filming, believe it or not, I had a little accident on a motorcycle and broke my leg in a compound fracture, ”Braun recalled. “That means the bones are coming out.”

The story continues

Sheen visits Braun in the hospital, and the actor is deeply saddened by what he sees.

“Charlie came in furious. I had to calm him down. And then he got frustrated and wrote a check for a million dollars and put it on my hospital bed and said, ‘I want you to stop doing stunts. If this is necessary, I want you to stop. ’He wrote me a check for a million dollars. And back then, that was really big money.

“Of course I didn’t pay the check, I put it somewhere. You never know when you’ll need it. ”

Although Stuntman describes how hard his job has been at the age, Braun still performs stunts today.

“You don’t want to be the last man at the party. You want to always leave while the party is still nice. You want to quietly come out on the left stage,” said Braun, who planned to slowly move into labor. “As a stunt performer, you have to find a way to know when and when is enough.”

Stuntman is now streaming on Disney+.

A Dark Conversation with Stuntman Eddie Braun, Who Is Jumping Across Snake River Canyon on a Rocket

The statement I make is as important as the actions that people see on the outside. In other words, if it’s pathetic, yes, okay, that’s sad, but how pathetic am I chasing something noble? How sad that I came out as a stuntman the biggest stunt one could dream of? How pathetic it is, it’s still pretty honorable that you didn’t die because you ran into something you feared. You see, I can’t help but always think of Todd Beamer. Do you know who that man is?

Not at the top of my head.

He led the charge to take Flight 93 from the terrorists. They flew it to the ground. As tragic as what happened to him, what’s outlasted that physical act, what’s outlasted him, is the impact that he made. In the face of fear, in the face of impossible results, he rose to the occasion. He said, “Let’s roll.” And he came in and led the charge. The statement of what he made went beyond the physical. And this is very tragic. How proud are his children and his family of that statement? Their father was a hero in their eyes. I mean he was faced with insurmountable possibilities, he did it with dignity. right? And he left a legacy: Wow, there’s a real American, doing something almost impossible. In the face of fears, he rose to the occasion. That affects. And he didn’t do it for money. He didn’t do it for fame.

The big difference is he didn’t put himself in that situation, though.

Yes, sure. It just presented. Okay, so how many more statements to my kids will I make for volunteering for these impossible possibilities?

But wait, are you equating your situation with his? Because he is a selfless act.

No no. Are you kidding me? No. He is more noble. Hers is more noble. I would never compare it to that. Not allowed. What I’m doing is stupidity, it’s superficial thing, superficial. And it is more important to me how it was made than what was made.

I have to ask: is receiving that message with your children worth the cost of you possibly not being there for them?

[pause] Yes. If I think about the bigger picture, yes. It’s worth it. Because that’s what stays with them. I never thought this would happen. I never thought it would end in tragedy. But again, not as a fool, you have to think of every possibility. I asked and Gary gave me his solemn promise that if it goes bad and I’m just a puddle at the other edge of the canyon, I asked him [for] two things. I said, “Cover the rocket or me. Just cover it. Because I don’t want people to see the gore, but I want them to see the image.” Another thing I asked him was to please remove my watch from me if there was any left. I want my son to get my watch. I wore this watch through countless stunts. It is also a simple watch. It’s a Rolex, but it’s a plain, really basic one. But it means a lot to me. I’ve worn it to some stunts and I want my son to get it.

When I left home, this might be the last time I would see my children. I make a routine when I go to work. “Okay, I love you. I’ll see you soon. Blah blah blah.” right? There’s one, eh, thing I shared with my son, though. I looked at my son, he’s 17 years old, so he’s in that awkward age. He is a man, but a man. And I looked at him and I said, “Deck, I need you to promise me one thing.” He went, “What, Dad, what?” I said, “You have to promise me that if I don’t come back you’ll take each of your sisters down the aisle when it’s time for them to get married. You have to represent me. Promise me that.” He went, “Aw, dad, come on.” I said, “No, seriously, Deck. Give me two seconds to hear the serious thing. You promised me you would take each of your brothers down the aisle if I didn’t come back.” And he looked at me, he said, “Yeah, dad, I will. Of course I will.” I said, “OK, cool. But I’ll be back.”
