David Niven Jr.

British actor

David Niven Jr. is a British film producer, actor[1] and screenwriter who worked as an executive at Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures.[2] He is the son of actor David Niven[3] and Primula Rollo.[4]

Career [edit]

Niven was head of the William Morris Agency in Europe,[2] which he left for Columbia Pictures in 1970.[5] Among his many clients was Robert Woods.[6] He was managing director of Paramount Pictures England until 1975, when he turned to film production.[7]

In 1976 he produced The Eagle Has Landed and in 1979 Escape to Athena, in which his father starred. He was nominated for a 1985 Primetime Emmy Award for executive producing The Night They Saved Christmas,[8] which he co-wrote with James C. Maloney.[9]

Niven was a regular on the 1990 edition of To Tell the Truth, hosted by Gordon Elliott, making 14 appearances.[10]

In the 1990s he was chairman emeritus of the Hollywood group Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes against Drunk Driving (R.A.D.D)[11][12] and founder of the bicycle safety group See a Child, Save a Child.[13] In 2002, he successfully lobbied for a Child Safety Day and Week that was accepted by the City of Los Angeles.[14]

At a Jackie Collins book launch in 1987, Niven was asked if he would ever write a book about his life, to which he replied: “But how can I, when everything, everything I’ve ever done, said or thought is in… Jackie’s novels appear.” ‘There’s nothing left,’ he laments. ‘I don’t know why the headings of some chapters aren’t ‘I want to dedicate this…'”[15]

Niven’s acting credits include Rush Hour 3[16] and The Cool Surface.

Away from the film, in 1972 Niven invested in the Drones restaurant on Pont Street, London,[17] which he recommended naming after Bertie Wooster’s fictional club. At his request, a picture of his father was placed on the wall. The restaurant was later operated by Marco Pierre White’s restaurant group, White Star Group.[18] The location changed hands under new owners and closed in 2007.

Personal life[edit]

Noël Coward was Niven’s godfather and gave him a silver cocktail shaker with the inscription “Because, my dear godson, I think you will turn out more like your father.”[19] Niven knew Jane and Peter Fonda, Mia Farrow, Nancy and Frank Sinatra Jr. and Candice Bergen are growing up.[20]

Niven was married to actress and producer Barbara Niven from 1993 until their divorce in 1998. He had previously been in a relationship with Natalie Wood in the 1960s. He married his second wife Beatrice Anne Reeve, daughter of Annette de la Renta, in 2000,[22] but divorced in 2005.[23] In 2009, he sold his home on Sunset Boulevard for $5 million.[2]

In 1994, Niven and his brother Jamie donated their father’s archive to the Online Archive of California.[24] In 2009, Michael Munn published a biography of his father, David Niven, which horrified Niven Jr. Niven and his brother were close to their father and questioned many of the claims in the book.[25]

Barbara Niven

American actress

Barbara Niven (née Bucholz; born February 26, 1953) is an American actress, writer, and producer best known for her appearances in Hallmark and Lifetime films, as well as television roles on Pensacola: Wings of Gold, One Life to Live, Cedar Cove, and Chesapeake Shores. Niven had the lead role in the independent film A Perfect Ending (2012). She is also a motivational speaker, media trainer, and animal rights activist, and national ambassador for American Humane.

Early life

Barbara Lee Bucholz was born in Portland, Oregon in 1953 to parents George and Edie Bucholz.[2] She has two sisters, Shelley[3] and Kim, and attended David Douglas High School. She has stated that she knew at the age of five that she wanted to be an actress.[4] She grew up hunting and fishing[5] and attended high school before pursuing acting.[6]

After graduating from high school, she attended college for six months,[7] worked as an export coordinator for a foundry, as a general contractor, sold commercial real estate and modeled.[1] She married at twenty-one and ran a business with her husband.[8] Niven became a mother at twenty-six.[9] After a divorce and no child support, she found an apartment with roommates to help with expenses.

Her 10-year high school reunion committee sent out a questionnaire with the final question: “Have you achieved everything in your life that you have set your mind to?” Realizing that she had not yet started acting prompted Niven to pursue acting self-declaring that she would “become an actress” and “kinda be in show business.” Realizing her penchant for being in front of the camera and her love of writing, she decided to seek a job in news reporting.[4]

Career

Started

Niven sought out the news director at KGW in Portland and asked him to make sample stories for him to critique. She promised to pass it on if she had a successful career. He agreed and delivered a typical screenplay. She was later hired as an intern, and her story about the White House Easter Egg Roll made the network news.[4]

She spent hours reading from the drama department of Powell’s Books and memorizing a monologue from Neil Simon’s Chapter Two. In the early 80’s there was a nationwide search to replace the character Tina Lord in One Life to Live. An audition was held in Seattle. Niven drove out of Portland in the freezing rain, taped the monologue, and drove home without telling anyone what she had done. She was one of several people selected to go to New York for a screen test.[10]

In New York, she was told by ABC casting director Mari Lyn Henry[11] that she had no star qualities and that her voice would only lead to victim roles.[12] She returned to Portland determined to work on her voice and her craft. She got a retired radio man to be her voice coach. She was cast in the 1986 Hallmark Hall of Fames Promise, which was filmed in Oregon. She received her SAG card for this film.[13] When her daughter was ten years old,[14] she packed her things into a truck and trailer and moved to Los Angeles.

Others in the squad were also bulimic/anorexic. Niven immediately got help for both of them.
