But what do we know about Leylah’s story and her journey to becoming a professional tennis player? This is her story.

Early life, parents and upbringing

Leylah Fernandez (full name: Leylah Annie Fernandez) was born on September 6, 2002 in Montreal, Quebec. Her father Jorge is from Ecuador and her mother Irene is a Filipino Canadian. Her younger sister Bianca also plays tennis.

She is the second of three children and is fluent in English, French and Spanish. Fernandes, a left-hander, started playing tennis at the age of five and was competing by the age of ten.

Fernandez showed a passion for sports from a young age and played football, volleyball and competed in track and field competitions. However, it was tennis that caught her attention and she spent hours practicing hitting her shots against the basement wall.

Her parents enrolled her in a provincial development program in Montreal (which was in partnership with the national program), but she was expelled from it at a young age.

It was at this point that Fernandez’s father, Jorge – a former soccer player – rose to become their coach, despite not having played tennis himself.

Fernandez’s father Jorge told CBC Sports: “She was crying and I’m looking at this little girl. ‘Honey, is this really important to you?’ She said yes and that she really wanted to play. I said, ‘If you want, I’ll coach you.'”

Fernandez believes her parents’ support during her formative years was key in laying the foundation for later success.

“With the help of my father, who also studied with me and my younger sister, and also my mother, they were all there and just encouraging me and telling me if I want to stop playing tennis, I can,” Fernandez said CBC sport.

“Tennis isn’t the only thing in life that will make you happy, but for me I just kept improving, put my head down and kept working. Over time, a few years later, the results came and I also had more opportunities.”

As she grew up and developed her game, Leylah took inspiration from former world number one Justine Henin, who enjoyed a glittering career with seven Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal.

“She is neither the tallest nor the strongest player, but she always found a solution when playing against bigger players,” Leylah said of Henin in the same interview with CBC Sports. “She had the talent, great hands, slices and drop shots to open up space where not many could and that inspired me that I can do it too and I want to inspire other kids to believe that they can too.”

Career Milestones

Fernandez turned pro in 2017 and earned a total of $3,608 in prize money in both singles and doubles that year.

In 2018, Fernandez played and won the first WTA match of his career by reaching the second round in Quebec City, beating his compatriot Gabriela Dabrowski 6-3, 7-5 in round one after receiving a wild card. In the end, she lost in the next round to Britain’s Heather Watson 6-4, 7-5.

In June 2019, Fernandez reached the Australian Open Girls’ Singles final where she lost to Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-4, 6-3.

Later that year, Fernandez won the Roland Garros junior title, becoming the first Canadian to win a junior Grand Slam singles title since Felix Auger-Aliassime won the US Open for juniors in 2016.

In 2020, Fernandez made her WTA debut when she survived three qualifying rounds and reached the first round of the Australian Open, where she lost to American Lauren Davis in straight sets.

Later that year, in Acapulco, she reached her first WTA Tour-level final. She lost in the final to Heather Watson in straight sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Her impressive run in Mexico came after she reached the quarterfinals of the 2020 Monterrey Open.

In March 2021, Fernandez won her first WTA seniors title at the Monterrey Open, beating Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 6-1, 6-4 in the final. She won the tournament without dropping a single set.

US Open 2021

Fernandez had a spectacular run to the finals at the 2021 US Open. En route to the final, Fernandez became the youngest player to defeat three top-five seeded players in the same major since Serena Williams at the 1999 US Open.

Among the opponents she defeated en route to the final were former US Open champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber.

Fernandez, who turned 19 during the tournament in Flushing Meadows, beat fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals before defeating second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals to stage a showdown with fellow teenage girl Emma Raducanu in the final.

The match between Fernandez and Raducanu was the first all-teen final at the US Open since 1999.

Despite an excellent performance in an exciting match, Fernandez ended up losing in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to Brit Raducanu.

“I think I’ll carry this defeat for a very long time,” Fernandez said at her post-game press conference. “I think it will motivate me to get better at training, better for the next opportunity I get. I’m very happy with myself, with the way I started, with the game I played, with the way I behaved on the pitch over the last two weeks. Not only have I improved my tennis technique, but also emotionally and mentally.”

When asked what she learned about herself during the tournament, she replied: “One thing that really surprised me was that the more outgoing I am on the pitch and try to involve the crowd, the better I play. When I was younger I usually tried to stay as calm as possible, just like [Roger] Federer. I’m glad I found that, I play a lot better when I’m more outgoing and use the crowd to my advantage.”

Fernandez took home a $1,250,000 prize money check for second place in New York. Both Fernandez and Raducanu made their top 30 debuts after the tournament.

Further progress

Leylah won the second WTA title of her career in March 2022 when she triumphed at the Monterrey Open in Mexico. She defeated Camila Osorio of Colombia 6-7(5) 6-4 7-6(3) to win the tournament for the second year in a row.

Life outside the court

Fernandez’s hobbies include taking dance classes – and she’s currently learning salsa with her younger sister.

She loves solving puzzles and Rubik’s Cubes when there are game lags or during her free time at the hotel.

When it comes to food, she loves desserts but is particularly fond of melted lava chocolate cake.

Fernandez revealed in an interview with CBS Sports that her father isn’t too strict with her when it comes to her diet.

“He actually lets me eat whatever I want, which is pretty cool that he’s not too strict outside of court,” Leylah said. “The only thing he’s strict about is my schooling, like all parents, aside from just saying balance your life, you have time to relax and hang out, but when it’s time to work, you work. That.” is all he wants for me and to be independent.”

Fernandez has also revealed that she is a huge admirer of Manchester City and Real Madrid football clubs.

“I love Real Madrid but right now we’re taking a kind of break from them and supporting Manchester City,” said Fernandez. “I like Pep Guardiola, his style is like my tennis game, so I learn from him.”

What have others said?

Emma Raducanu praised Fernandez’s game after the 2021 US Open final. She said: “Right from the start I knew it was going to be an extremely difficult match because Leylah played incredible tennis and won a lot of the top 10 this week. I knew I really had to bring my game.

“I was just trying to focus on one point as much as possible. There were some really great fights. I really had to dig deep to weather some adversity in both sets.”

Former world number one Andy Roddick was quick to praise both players during the 2021 US Open final: “These two young women [Raducanu and Fernandez] are a gift to the sport of tennis. An absolute gift.”

Former world number one Billie Jean King also praised both players after the US Open final. She wrote on Twitter: “What a great display of competition and maturity from two exceptional players. It’s wonderful to see this generation living our dream. I can’t remember a US Open with better crowd support. Thank you NY, the biggest fans in the world.”
