Jordan Donica Is Broadway’s Modern Gentleman

The 24-year-old actor is redefining the role of the romantic lead on and off the stage.

Masculinity is in the mind.

GQ’s “Hollywood Star of the Future” Ezra Miller recently outlined his ideal mascot of manhood, the “Rooster-Type Man”; Jane the Virgin heartthrob Justin Baldoni’s series We Are Man Enough explores what it means to ‘be a man’; Former NFL defenseman and Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Terry Crews wrote a book about masculinity; Heck, even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is talking about redefining masculinity.

The ripples of this men’s movement are receding before #MeToo — although it has tidal alongside it — as our culture re-examines how men relate to women, and, more simply, like men.

In other words: what makes a gentleman in 2018?

“Being a gentleman means being a decent human being and treating everyone with equality, respect and love,” says actor Jordan Donica, also weighing the moment of reappraisal on Broadway.

The 24-4 year old is a good match as he seems to have cornered the music market for this guy.

Immediately after graduating from Otterbein University in 2016, Broadway’s longest-running The Phantom of the Opera cast Donica as the romantic Vicomte de Chagny Raoul. No sooner had he made his Broadway debut than a little show called Hamilton came knocking and asked him to play the dual roles of French expat Marquis de Lafayette and fellow France-loving American Thomas Jefferson on the first national tour. Then Broadway withdrew with an offer to play elite British Freddy Eynsford-Hill in the 2018 revival of the classic My Fair Lady – where audiences continue to swoon at his “On the Street Where You Live.”

A French aristocrat, a southern gentleman and an English nobleman. At a time when we’re collectively re-evaluating what it means to be a man, Donica offers a refreshing answer on and off the stage.

It’s no coincidence that directors think of Donica when casting Broadway’s latest incarnations of gentlemen. He illuminates qualities within these characters that are inherent in him. After spending the morning with him while slipping into blazers, sweaters and leather jackets, “gentle” is the first word that springs to mind for the man with such an easy demeanor and reassuring presence.

When clothes make the man, Donica goes through the world in a relaxed manner. (Though his six-foot-five frame prefers a tuxedo or floor-length velvet, he feels like himself in a pair of jeans.) You can tell his priorities just by looking at him; he literally wears them on his sleeve.

On his right wrist: a bracelet from Malawi to remind him of his host family, a gift from parents at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he sang in honor of the victims of the Parkland school massacre, a silicone bracelet for a youth program promoting LGBTQ equality in his hometown of Indianapolis, a ring of Balance beads. He leads with sensitivity and empathy; his comfort comes from rootedness; his strength comes from honesty and vulnerability; his confidence comes from “someone else’s energy”; its depth comes from wonder.

A spirit of generosity and concern for others is at its core. He literally wore a key around his neck on the opening night of My Fair Lady. Today there is a necklace with the inscription “Life is a journey”.

“I asked people, ‘If you could turn your life into a movie, what would it be? Up to date. Not for the future,” he explains. “I asked my mom and her fraternity sisters the name of their film together and they said ‘Journey.’ They sent me this necklace as a thank you.” (His would be called Franklin, for the record. “It’s about my [early] childhood in Franklin, Tennessee.”)

That’s the kind of question Donica is interested in. Personally. Real. “I’m just about asking questions, and I’m about continuing to think about things that people don’t really want to delve into,” he says. He doesn’t enjoy small talk. “Whenever I’m with my friends, they always ask, ‘How long will it be before this conversation turns into small talk? When are we going to dive into philosophy and things that matter and life and love and happiness? And how are we really doing and how are we really feeling?’”

A lover of conversations, Donica is willing to share but also eager to listen. “You don’t lose any of your ‘manhood’ by giving your opinion to someone else — and especially someone you love. In fact, you get more back when you give up a little bit of your own pride,” he says. “That’s something I learned playing Raoul.”

Having started his career with three high-profile roles, Donica has learned a lot from these men – and audiences have learned from his interpretation. “What I love about Raoul is his quiet confidence – at least that’s what I’ve found in him,” he says confidently.

“[Jefferson] was just high spirited and loving everything,” he says, laughing. Like his proud continental congressman, Donica has a zest for life and says he’s willing to try anything. “The way I played him, I found him to be someone who just wanted everyone to have a good time — at least in the context of Hamilton.” Something he also finds in his current Broadway alter ego. “Freddy…” he pauses, “[feels] an endless joy and wonder of life. Maybe that’s just something that reminds me of myself: an openness to joy.”

Openness is the nature of Donica.

He lives by a philosophy of non-judgment, especially when it comes to Freddy, who often has a bad reputation for being simple-minded.

“I think a lot of people misunderstand being nice with naivety and naive with being stupid. You can be naive and not stupid,” he says. “Naivety is knowing that everything is fine.” Donica is always looking for the good.

This penchant for optimism, his open-mindedness, his forgiving nature all come from one place: his family.

Raised by single women — his mother, his aunt, his grandma, his sister, his cousin — Donica grew up in a house with a revolving door and was bursting with vivacity (“We’re small, but we make up for it with energy”) and enveloping welcome (“Countless people would come and go and just stay with us.”). “I hope to be at least half as human as these women,” he says in awe.

His helping impulse and his non-judgmental reflex come from them. It doesn’t seem to come as a surprise that Donica was raised by women, the gender our culture has always allowed – no, expected – to be selfless, altruistic, and welcoming. “I always play my characters without rating. When we practice that as artists, it helps us in life to understand why someone does what they do,” he continues. “I think that’s a really good way to approach life and it’s a good way to approach theatre.”

Underscoring his sincerity and search for hard truths, a playfulness hums. He loves video games and escape rooms, he harbors a fandom for WWE (“It’s world-class acting, the best directed fight on earth”) and – he’s not ashamed of it – the Power Rangers. But he also spends his free time writing screenplays (“practicing the art of storytelling in a different way”) and practicing the Sunday night ritual of having dinner in a new place, always with cuisine from a far-off land, with his two best friends. They’re thinking of turning this into a #FeastWithUs podcast, where they invite a new person each week to “spread their thoughts about the world.”

“Life is about asking questions and looking for answers, but never really coming to full conclusions because the answers are always evolving,” he says.

He, too, is evolving. “I feel like I’m becoming the artist I’m going to be, at least for the next ten years or so: dangerously – in an exciting way – inquiring, open-minded and welcoming.”

As he expresses quiet confidence in Raoul, playfulness in Jefferson, openness in Freddy on stage, he fuses yesterday’s written gentleman with today’s lively. Today’s masculinity is not an extreme, it draws strength from its balance with femininity.

What makes Donica a worthy role model in today’s discussion of masculinity is how he treats others. Respect is this gentleman’s idea of romance.

“A really good friend of mine said it’s our job as humans to fall in love with everyone we meet,” he says. “For me, that is a gentleman, but also a person: to find something in every person to fall in love with.”
