Shortly after joining the ABC-7 network in 2003, Leon became a regular on every Washington television network. His first major work as a presenter came when he joined the CNN network in the early 1980s.
At first he was just an intern in the building, but he soon showed his talent and became an anchor in the 1990s. His major reporting work includes the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and the 2000 presidential election.

Leon Harris (born April 20, 1961 in Akron, Ohio) is an American journalist and news anchor. Harris was born to Leon Sr. and Lorrene Harris in Akron, Ohio. He has three brothers: Marcus, Jerry, and J.J., who still reside in Akron; and a sister, Kimberly, who lives in Houston.[1]
In 1979 he graduated from Buchtel High School and earned a National Merit Scholarship from Ohio University, where he met his wife, Dawn Lomax, whose family is also from Akron. Harris graduated with honors from Ohio University in 1983 with a major in communications. In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate from the university.[2]
Harris began his career in the early 1980s at CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta as an unpaid intern while completing his undergraduate degree. After graduating in 1983, Harris began as an entry-level video journalist and later rose to the rank of associate director of the satellite division as operator and coordinator. In this position, he oversaw and negotiated international and domestic satellite services used to cover emerging events, including the Gulf War and the international trips and summits of President Ronald Reagan and President George HW Bush.[1]
Harris auditioned for an anchor position in the summer of 1991; a few months later he landed a full-time position as an anchor. Harris has received numerous awards from CNN, including multiple Emmy Awards for his coverage of the 2000 presidential election, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the September 11 attacks. However, as competition from Fox News mounted and CNN veterans like Natalie Allen and Lou Waters slipped in favor of Paula Zahn and Aaron Brown, Harris felt less comfortable. His most recent position at CNN was as co-host of CNN Live Today with Daryn Kagan.
In July 2003, Harris signed a deal with ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington, DC to anchor that station’s 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. newscasts. He took up his new post on October 28.[3] In 2006, Harris received the 2006 Local Emmy Award for Best Anchor. On September 2, 2016, WJLA declined to renew his contract and his tenure with the station ended in October of that year.
In 2013, Harris was profiled for surviving twice to death from necrotizing pancreatitis.
In April 2017, Washington, D.C. station WRC-TV, operated by NBC, announced announced that Leon Harris will be joining his news team on April 21.[7] He currently hosts News 4 at 4 alongside Pat Lawson-Muse and reports for News 4 at 11.

Harris currently resides in Avenel, Potomac, Maryland with his wife Dawn, a registered nurse at a local hospital. Leon’s son Darren (a Bucknell University graduate) lives in Seattle, WA while his daughter Lauren (a Temple University graduate) is an early childhood educator living in Atlanta, GA.
In 2013, Harris was charged with driving under the influence in Montgomery County, Maryland, to which he pleaded guilty. He was granted parole prior to sentencing, serving a six-month probation period that ended in September 2014.[8][9]
On January 29, 2022, Harris was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after an accident in Montgomery County.[10] He was off the air for over a month during an investigation before returning in mid-March.[9][11] In June 2022 he was sentenced to one year in prison with up to ten days probation; three-year supervised probationary period; and using a locking device on his vehicle.[12]
