Liam McAtasney sentenced to life without parole for murdering friend Sarah Stern, dumping her body off NJ bridge

Sarah Stern disappeared in December 2016 and was never seen again.

Liam McAtasney was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his childhood friend Sarah Stern in December 2016 and enlisting the help of his former roommate to throw her body over a bridge in New Jersey.

McAtasney was also sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison for desecrating human remains. This set is executed continuously.

In February, a Monmouth County jury found McAtasney guilty on all seven counts, including first-degree murder, conspiracy, desecration of human remains, tampering with evidence and other charges. He was accused of strangling 19-year-old Stern, his high school classmate, in December 2016 and her prom date and enlisting his former roommate Preston Taylor to help remove her body from a bridge in Belmar, New Jersey. to throw, according to the authorities. Stern’s body was never recovered.

Prosecutors argued McAtasney killed Stern for the thousands of dollars that once belonged to her mother, who died of cancer in 2013. They claimed McAtasney had been planning Stern’s death for six months and that his goal was to get money out of her safe deposit box, which he believed was stuffed with cash.

Sarah’s father, Michael Stern, wore a purple shirt – his daughter’s favorite color – as he read an emotional impact statement on Friday. He said his life had been in turmoil since the day his daughter disappeared.

“I was devastated and numb with shock the day I learned from detectives that Sarah had been murdered. I had horrible dreams and nightmares,” he said. “The horrific act that happened to her body haunts me every day. I will never be able to hug Sarah again.”

Michael Stern spoke of all the people who will miss Sarah but never addressed McAtasney directly. The defendant looked down during his testimony and never made eye contact with Stern. But just moments later, as prosecutors described the details of his crime and pleaded for another conviction, McAtasney wiped tears from his eyes.

Prosecutor Meghan Doyle accused him that his tears in court were fake and that McAtansey showed no remorse.

Defense attorney Carlos Diaz-Cobo argued that McAtasney had no criminal record and other charges should be running concurrently.

Judge Richard English finally sentenced the 21-year-old to life in prison without parole plus 10 years, saying: “This is truly a despicable event as these were two people who had known each other since high school. He came up with this plan six months in advance and convinced someone else to go along with it.”

Also present in the courtroom was Sarah’s classmate and Liam’s good friend, Anthony Curry. In a covert operation with the police, he secretly taped McAtasney and recorded what prosecutors argued McAtasney confessed to the crime. Curry made no comment.

English credited Curry for breaking the case: “Without Mr. Curry, this might have been a cold case.”

Video of Curry’s hidden camera recording was shown to the jury during the trial.

“It took me half an hour to kill her… The worst part is I thought I was walking out [with] $50,000 to $100,000 in my pocket,” McAtasney said on the tape. “She had a safe that she was taking money out of and she only had $10,000.”

“He treated her life like a joke,” English said.

English said: “McAtansey made several mistakes even though he thought he was the smartest person. He didn’t expect [his former roommate and Stern’s prom date] Preston [Taylor] to give up faster than anyone I’ve ever met have seen.”

Taylor earlier this year pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains.

Taylor, who testified against McAtasney, said McAtasney told him Stern had the “kind of money someone would kill for” and that he planned to get her drunk and take the money her mother left.

Taylor will be sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison next week.
