The triage center could be real. In fact it is real. The only illusion-breaker is a poster hanging on a nearby wall showing a grid-shaped map of downtown Chicago. It’s not because I’m acutely aware that I’m standing in a sound stage about 2000 miles from the Windy City, nor because of the temperature difference inherent in that 2000 miles, but because the phone number is at the bottom of the map stands has the most fictitious of all prefixes, 555.

Welcome to the world of ER, a world so real it has captivated television viewers for nearly a decade. And meet set designer Tim Colohan, who has been with the multi-award-winning show since the beginning of its sixth season (1999-2000).

In an uncanny and unfortunate irony, Colohan came aboard ER

because of an illness of his colleague Michael Claypool, who soon died of cancer. “It was Ivo Cristante (the production designer) who asked me to fill in temporarily while Michael underwent chemotherapy,” said Colohan. “At first I saw myself as a substitute holding the fort. I didn’t think it would end up being my job and my crew.” Now in his fourth season as ER’s Resident Doctor of Dress, Colohan looks back on the show’s past and future, both of which have contributed to his career .

“The decoration itself hasn’t changed too much, but the

Have logistics and scale,” said Colohan, noting that the scale of each show has also increased over time. “Due to the pacing of the show, there are at least four to five storylines in an episode. Sometimes you only see four or five sets in the teaser now. Most of the show might be in the ER after that, but we used all the sets for just that one episode.”

Colohan emphasized that the longer the show has run, the more the show’s budget has been expanded to include storylines outside of the physical ER itself. “We went from one stage to five stages. The show has grown to 26 stand-up sets, with 10-14 swing sets for each episode.” Luckily, Colohan’s amazing crew, led by lead Tobey Bays and assisted by buyer Dorit Oberman, has the skills of ’emergency’ set dressing refined.

“Over time, the show develops its own visual language,”

Colohan added, “And the producers always wanted this to be as rich and dense as possible. So we increased the levels on the sets. You don’t usually have time for that with TV.”

The world of ER is fully immersive, evidenced by the fact that the shooting style incorporates a full 360 perspective. “In terms of the technology that influences our work,” said Colohan, “the steadicam and 360-degree view of the environment are critical to the show. And the advent of Hi-Def TV means we have to pay more attention to detail.”

ER just aired its 200th episode and is now the most-nominated hour-long drama in Emmys history.

Congratulations to the entire ER crew.
