On April 7, 2021, the State Administrative Council issued arrest warrants under Section 505(a) of the Criminal Code for speaking out against the military coup. A prominent actor and model in Myanmar has been sentenced to three years in prison for taking part in mass protests against junta rule.
Paing Takhon, 25, has been vocal in condemning the military government on social media and has also taken part in several mass protests.
Mr. Takhon was arrested at his home in Yangon by about 50 soldiers who arrived in eight military trucks in April this year, according to his sister.
Khin Maung Myint, the actor’s legal counsel, told AFP news agency he was “imprisoned for three years for forced labour”.
The verdict was announced on the same day that a prosecution witness was scheduled to speak on behalf of the plaintiff.
“The judge and the investigating police officer showed Paing Takhon photos that the police had filed with him and asked him if he had taken part in these protests,” a member of the actor’s legal team told the independent Myanmar Now news agency.
“When he said he did it, they said it was a confession and they were dropping the case there and handed him the verdict,” the unnamed attorney added.
The actor, who has over a million followers, had his Instagram and Facebook accounts shut down by the military following his arrest in April.
Photos on social media showed that the actor frequently attended protests calling for the restoration of democracy.
Writer Than Myint Aung, 67, was also sentenced to three years in prison on Monday for sedition.
The South Asian country has struggled with civil wars since the junta ousted the democratic government in a coup in February after alleging fraud in an election won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s party.
Independent observers had insisted the election was fair.
Shortly after the coup, the junta published a list of around 120 wanted celebrities.
