The COVID-19 crisis may have slowed many people, but not the Rev. Mike McClure Jr., senior pastor of Birmingham’s Rock City Church. Even in the midst of the pandemic, he remains as busy as ever.
Thanks to the success of his debut album “Live Free” and his hit single “Big,” McClure, 36, is not only a pastor but also a chart -topping recording artist — and he is set to perform at Freedom Fest. , the City of Birmingham’s music and empowerment festival, on Saturday, July 25th.
Due to the pandemic, this year’s event will be held rather in person, as in 2019, the inaugural year, but that hasn’t dampened McClure’s excitement about this weekend’s showcase.
“I am extremely humbled and grateful that the city of Birmingham has thought of me enough to include me in [Freedom Fest],” McClure said. “In the midst of a global pandemic, systematic oppression, protests, and civil unrest, what better year to declare independence?”
In January, McClure was nominated for five Stellar Awards, a recognition of achievements in the gospel music industry, and is set to be a feature performer in the 35th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards program. The event, originally scheduled for March 27 in Las Vegas, Nevada, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis and has been rescheduled for later this year.
However, McClure found another way to celebrate his success — by coming back. He partnered with the medical debt collection agency, RIP Medical Debt, and used the proceeds from album sales to pay off nearly $ 1 million of medical debt for residents in the Birmingham area.

“I believe it is our responsibility to play our part and let our voices be heard,” McClure said, adding that he and Rock City Church also sponsored voter registration drives and helped finance the murals. of Black Lives Matter on the Miles College campus.
“We don’t aim to just lightly pavement, but also to get behind them and provide some sort of financial support in this time of need,” he said.

A Big and Busy Life
It was a cold and rainy Tuesday afternoon in February, and McClure was tired. Exhausted.
The pastor traveled from Los Angeles, California, to Atlanta, Georgia, on a nightly flight. After a two-and-a-half hour drive from Atlanta to Birmingham, he returned home around 3 a.m. Today is in the business offices of Rock City Church preparing for meetings and services on Tuesday night.
Evenings and mornings are common for McClure now that he is often asked to perform at events around the country. McClure’s “Live Free” hit No. 1 on the Billboard gospel album chart in late October, just a month after its release; the album features the hit single “Big,” which will last 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel charts.
Next were the Stellar Awards nominations.“It’s surreal,” McClure said once he found out his nominations in categories that include Best Urban/Inspirational Single or Performance of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year. “It was one of those moments where you sat down, and it was like, ‘God, what are you doing?'”
McClure said seeing his name among legendary gospel artists like Kirk Franklin gave him ample reason to celebrate.
“I may be the first person in history to celebrate defeat,” McClure said with a laugh. “For me, just to be with those people, that was a win.”
This afternoon, McClure got another reason to celebrate — he found out that his single “Big” just hit No. 1. But he wasn’t sure what to do with this news. “Am I going? Am I lit up? What is my lit version? Communion for all! Give it back! ” McClure said jokingly.
“But, seriously, I don’t think it’s hit me yet because I’m still at work,” he said.
And there is always a lot of work to be done.
Before the pandemic, McClure’s days were filled with meetings and ministries — meetings with Rock City staff; meetings with Central Park Christian School staff, which Rock City took over in 2018; trips to hospitals to visit sick patrons; and impromptu meetings with members who need prayer for problems or want promotion for projects. Her days often start at 6 a.m., and there are nights she doesn’t come home until 10 p.m. or later.
McClure said some of his critics told social media that he had to decide if he was going to be a pastor or an actor. Meanwhile, McClure proved he could be both.

“To win at Stellar, that’s just bait,” McClure said in a series of interviews with the Birmingham Times.
He wanted his music to lead people to his message — and, for now, it works. Her Stellar nominations are for Best Urban/Inspirational Single or Performance of the Year for “Big,” New Artist of the Year for “Live Free” album, Song of the Year for “Big,” Music Video of the Year for “Big,” and Rap Hip Hop Gospel Album of the Year for “Live Free.”

Meanwhile, McClure wants people to see his success as evidence of what God can do with their lives.
“It’s just proof that if you stay faithful God will bless you,” McClure said. “It says to the person who wants to start a business: If you are honest, God will bless it.”
Tiffany Samuels has been a member of Rock City Church since 2010. She first visited when conducting services at L.R. Hall Auditorium in downtown Birmingham. He said McClure spent so much time chatting with the congregation before the service began that he thought he was an usher or greeter. Samuels brought his son and nephew to the service, and McClure talked to them about school and the importance of getting high grades. He did not know he was the pastor until he started preaching. This warm reception won Samuel over. He joined the church and soon began volunteering as well. In 2011, he quit his job in corporate America and began working full-time in the church — for free.
“My faith went to another level,” he said.
In 2012, he became a salaried church employee and now serves as Executive Director of Rock City Inc. Seeing the growth of Rock City Church and the success of McClure’s music career has only strengthened his faith, Samuels said.
“It reminds me that God can fulfill every promise He has given me,” he said. “My dreams aren’t too big.”
Big PraiseRock City Church holds its midweek service every Tuesday instead of Wednesday, like most churches. It provides an opportunity for people interested in the church to view Rock City without missing out on their home-church services, McClure explains.
This service on a Tuesday night in February is different, though. McClure called it “Freedom Night,” and there was no sermon — only praise and worship.
“What God wants to do is bigger than my message. It’s so proud to think that God can only move when I’m speaking, ”said McClure, who eventually wanted to have special services on Tuesday nights once every quarter.
This first Freedom Night was also a live recording of an album for Curtiss Glenn and Freedom Movement. Glenn is the pastor of worship in Rock City.
It was still raining, but that didn’t deter people. The sanctuary is full. Glenn and the Freedom Movement singers on stage wore jeans and a T-shirt featuring Bible verse Romans 8:28. In the New International Version (NIV), that verse reads, “And we know that in all things God worketh for the good of them that love him, who are called according to his purpose.” All the songs sung seem to be centered on this idea.
Most singers have towels hanging in their back pockets, and they will need them. Everyone goes to a worship service in Rock City, and your Fitbit (wearable fitness tracker) will think you’re in the gym. The singers and most of the congregation stepped and swayed from one side, jumped, and waved their hands in the air as they sang songs about praising God in any situation. For most of the night, McClure stood in the crowd, seeming to amaze everyone. At one point he pulled out his phone and was recording like a proud father in a recital.
Later, Glenn invited McClure to the stage and thanked him for being one of his biggest supporters.
“The greatest joy I have is to watch you become what God calls you,” McClure told Glenn and the congregation. “I still can’t imagine what we did as a church to get it.”
Large family
You could say that ministry is in McClure’s blood. The desire to serve others seemed to run in his family. McClure, a 2001 graduate of Minor High School, is the son of the Rev. Michael D. McClure Sr., pastor of Revelation Church Ministries in Irondale and a former police officer. His grandfather was Civil Rights chief Bishop Calvin Woods. The Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard is named for McClure’s great uncle, also a local legend for his work during the Civil Rights Movement.
McClure, who plays under the name Pastor Mike Jr., began campus ministry at Miles College before launching Rock Church in 2009. The church met at the Fairfield Civic Center, then L.R. Hall. In 2010, the congregation purchased the 12-acre former school campus at 1120 Apricot Avenue in Forestdale. For four years, Rock City held services at the Boutwell Auditorium, drawing thousands each Sunday. Today, with 10,605 members, the church has a branch campus in the Central Park area of Birmingham and a campus in Tuscaloosa.
McClure said he almost titled his album “Therapy” because that was what became the music for the self-taught singer and musician. A few years ago, an educator asked him, “How do you rinse?” She wanted to know what McClure had done to relieve loneliness and stress after a day of listening and trying to help other people’s problems. Music has been his way of doing that. He built a makeshift studio in the basement of his home and began writing and recording songs as a way to relax and release work tensions. At a church service in late 2018, McClure, supported by the Rock City praise group, began saying to the congregation, “The next time you get discouraged, I just want you to do it,” while waving he had his arms out. “‘Because your bank account may not look like this. With the help of church leaders and producers Curtiss Glenn and Rod Turner, who serve as the church’s musical director, “Big” became a complete song. McClure, however, only planned to perform the song at church and perhaps try to play it on local gospel radio, but nationally recognized music promoter Kerry Douglas urged McClure to think bigger. He knew “Big” was going to be a big hit.

The rest of the staff are in the control room going through slides showing the lyrics for today’s songs and the scripture for today’s sermon on the big screen at the sanctuary. Volunteers are rearranging seats in the sanctuary trying to provide space for as many people as possible. For today’s sermon, McClure reviewed Philippians 3: 13–14 (NIV) “Brethren, I do not yet consider myself to have touched this. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and pressuring what is ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ”
“[The Apostle] Paul was a specialist,” McClure told his congregation, reminding people that they were more likely to be good if they were experts. “If you are busy chasing after all the things you want to do, you will not be special in what God wants you to do.” “We should all focus on pleasing God,” he added.
A Happy Giver
McClure wanted to be a preacher since he was a child growing up in Birmingham’s Central Park neighborhood with his parents and his siblings Darius and Angelique. As a child he put on his bathrobe and walked around the house while delivering sermons.
“The only thing that inspired me was God and helping people,” McClure said.
When he was young he collected change from the deacons in the church just to give the money to people in need. The same generosity led him to acquire Central Park Christian School when it was about to close.
“This is the only Black-owned, fully recognized K-12 Christian school in Alabama,” McClure said.
Managing this school cost him a large portion of his family’s personal savings. And when he was paid for musical performances, he returned that money to Central Park Christian, buying books and offering scholarships to students in need. But finding a way to bring back the neighborhood he once called home has always been his dream.
McClure and Rock City Church often help members and other Birmingham residents pay utility bills, rent, mortgage payments, and more. The church held gas giveaways. He used proceeds from album sales to pay off nearly $ 1 million of medical debt for residents in the Birmingham area. However, McClure was criticized for his success and even for wearing expensive athletic shoes.“I’m in the only profession where I can be very good, and it’s wrong for me to take any of the credit,” McClure said. “People are attacking, and those I’ve helped keep quiet.”

In 2013, McClure and the church put up a billboard just behind the sign of The Palace Gentlemen’s Club on Third Avenue West that said, “Strip for me.” The sign was inspired by a verse in Hebrews (New Living Translation): “Let us lay aside every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that drives us so easily.”
“When you’re young, you do dumb things like that or get too wild sometimes,” McClure said.
However, the billboard hit the men who often go to the club and the women who work there; there are still those who join the church, he said.
Finally, in the sermon, McClure encouraged his congregation to reach forward and continue toward the mark. He then showed a video clip of Olympic runners preparing for a race. He showed the runners their scores and hitting the blocks. Christians should be prepared to be blocks, helping to push others into their race, he says.
Also, McClure said one of the perks of his success in music is bringing others for the ride. He was able to introduce Glenn and other emerging artists to big names in the music industry. Before postponing the show, McClure planned to bring his team to Las Vegas for the Stellar Awards program. Today, they’re in place for McClure’s performance at Saturday’s Freedom Fest.
After 9 a.m. service earlier this year, McClure went down the aisle to greet church attendees who had already lined up for the next service. He then exited the parking lot to help direct traffic. Yes, he has a group of volunteers to do this, but he wants to give them help, because it helps him get to know Rock City members better.
“I like that dress,” he told an attendee.
“How are the grades?” he asked a young member.
Others stop by to share good news about having a new home or increasing business income.
“If you serve very well, you can’t lead,” McClure said.
