Leaving aside the notorious murderer, as Rubenhold does, the author creates a three-dimensional picture of the times and places in which these women moved, loved, lived, had children and finally died. It is an incredibly fascinating account that stirs both the intellect and the emotions. A haunting journey into the history of 19th-century England, particularly the life of the working class and poor, Rubenhold leaves no stone unturned as he fleshes out these stories. Some of this is speculative, as it has to be given the scant information available, but using primary sources and in-depth research into jobs, skills required, and people who lived parallel lives, the narrative feels intuitive, detailed, and accurate. I could easily follow and believe in the conclusions she made.
It is an interesting beginning that she makes in her introduction, the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s fiftieth reign, celebrated on June 20, 1887, exactly fifty years after the Queen’s accession to the throne. The splendor of the dignitaries present and all the celebrations are the stories reported in the newspaper, Rubenhold writes, while the other story is underreported and largely unrecognized. This is the story of a poor agricultural season and a surge in unemployment that has led to an influx of homeless people. It is the story of the discouraged poor and the marginalized where those living on the margins face unimaginable hardships. Polly Nichols is among the homeless in an open-air camp in Trafalgar Square. Her assassination will take place just over twelve months later. The poor are the easiest to turn away from; we could turn to the Queen’s celebration, the glittering lights of money, prosperity and security. But look, Rubenhold says from the side. Look at these people.
One of Rubenhold’s central themes is that the statement that the five women killed by Jack the Ripper were prostitutes is a false statement. She goes to great lengths to show every woman’s steps through troubled marriages and troubled relationships. Desperation often led to the pitfalls of alcohol abuse. The cost of climbing down the bottom rung of the socioeconomic ladder is no nice thing. A woman without a husband during this period was without protection and mostly without recourse to a means of earning a living. Undereducated, often illiterate, they were not trained in skills or occupations like men. Expected of women to keep the house and supplement their finances by doing the laundry or doing low-paid jobs around the house, women are clearly disadvantaged. While society during the Victorian era accepted that men were promiscuous, women were expected to remain chaste. So when a man left a woman and she was forced to find another protector to keep her from going to the workhouse, she was judged a failure as a woman, wife and mother.
Rubenhold posits that the ease with which women were viewed as prostitutes and the ease with which the villainous Jack the Ripper is glorified says a lot about society then and now. Are we still invested in the madonna/whore mythology? I think we’ve made great strides, but there are times when these antiquated notions are amazingly still alive and well. Women are complex and don’t fall into either/or categories. I felt heartbreak learning these stories. Polly Nichols, whose husband is leaving her for another woman, begins a cascade of irrevocable rejections. Annie Chapman, who once lived on a Berkshire estate, becomes an alcoholic and ends up in the Whitechapel slums. 25-year-old Elisabeth Gustafsdotter, from Torslanda, Sweden, follows an opportunity and a chance at a new life in London, where she meets and marries 47-year-old carpenter John Stride. Kate Eddowes begins an uncertain life when she falls in love with peddler and singer Thomas Conway. And finally Mary Jane Kelly, a woman with a mysterious identity who recreates herself according to the occasion. I’m glad to have learned so much more about them than just how they died.
While I found this book compelling, there were times when I got stuck. A lot of information is presented and for those who, like me, are not used to reading a lot of non-fiction, it can be a bit challenging. I think it is well worth seeing Rubenhold writing so expertly about an always fascinating, often sad chapter of 19th-century English history.
