Cowboys owner Jerry Jones target of lawsuit over alleged secret daughter
A 25-year-old Washington DC woman has filed a lawsuit against Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, claiming he is her father, the Dallas Morning News and ESPN reported Wednesday.
Alexandra Davis, an assistant to US Congressman Ronny Jackson, claims Jones paid her mother $375,000 in 1996 to keep quiet about the child’s paternity, although Jones did not admit to being the father. Jones also allegedly set up two trust funds for Alexandra Davis through an attorney in Arkansas, where Cynthia Davis, her mother, lived.
Alexandra Davis is asking the Dallas County Court to rule that her mother’s agreement with Jones is unenforceable in Texas and to confirm that Jones is her father. According to Morning News, a hearing is scheduled for March 31.
“It’s hard to imagine what could be less in a child’s best interest than enforcing agreements that leave a child fatherless and prevent or legally penalize a child from even disclosing who their father is,” the lawsuit reads .
A spokesman for Jones, 79, declined to comment. Cynthia Davis also declined to comment to the Morning News.
Jones has been married to his wife Gene since 1963. They have three children together: Stephen, Jerry Jr. and Charlotte, all of whom work for the Cowboys. Cynthia Davis was also married at the time of the alleged affair, but was estranged from her then-husband.
The Morning News reported that Alexandra Davis and her mother were starring in the final season of a Dallas-area reality show called Big Rich Texas. Cynthia Davis’ representatives at the time said she was living on a trust fund. Alexandra Davis grew up in the Dallas area and graduated from Southern Methodist University. Jones was in contact with Cynthia Davis, but he and Alexandra Davis never met, the lawsuit says.
This isn’t the first time in recent months that the Cowboys have been in the news for non-football matters. In February, ESPN documents revealed that the Cowboys had paid members of their cheerleading team a multimillion-dollar settlement after they claimed a senior team leader filmed them in the AT&T Stadium locker room.
Jones has a net worth of $10.7 billion, according to Forbes, with his holdings being led by the Cowboys. The NFL team is valued at $5.7 billion by Forbes, making it the most valuable sports team in the world, with only the New York Yankees ($5.2 billion) and Knicks ($5 billion) also worth at least $5 billion .
