In high school, Odom was named 1997 National Player of the Year by Parade. He played college basketball for the University of Rhode Island and earned all-conference honors in his only season at the Atlantic 10 Conference before turning pro. Despite considering going straight out of high school into the NBA and consulting with Kobe Bryant as a player who had made that leap, Odom eventually decided he wasn’t ready and committed himself to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas instead . However, a Sports Illustrated story questioning the validity of his ACT score and an arrest for soliciting prostitution gave the school reason to revoke his scholarship, and for this reason he never played for the Runnin’ Rebels. To the university’s further embarrassment, an NCAA investigation later revealed that Odom had received $5,600 in illegal payments from one of his boosters,[17] resulting in Coach Bill Bayno being fired and UNLV being placed on probation for four years. 18]

Because he was admitted as an undmatriculated student, Odom had to sit out the 1997–98 season. However, after two semesters and one summer session, Odom earned his eligibility to play intramural basketball. Los Angeles Clippers (1999-2003)
Odom declared his eligibility for the 1999 NBA draft after his freshman year in Rhode Island. He then tried to return to college, thinking he wasn’t ready for the NBA. However, since he had already signed with an agent, he could no longer withdraw from the draft.[8] Odom was selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers. In his first season with the Clippers, Odom averaged 16.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. In the 2000-01 season, Odom increased his points average to 17.2 points per game as he started in 74 games. In March 2001, Odom was suspended for five games for violating the terms of the NBA’s anti-drug policy. The following season, he was suspended in November for another anti-drug policy violation, his second offense in eight months.[26][27] He admitted to using marijuana after the suspension.[28] Odom only played 29 games during the season, and his performance declined.

Miami Heat (2003-2004)
The Heat had won just 25 games last season but drafted young talent like Dwyane Wade and Caron Butler. Odom was signed as the team’s starting power forward. Along with an upstart Wade and veteran Eddie Jones, Odom shared the point load, averaging 17.1 points with a career-high 9.7 rebounds per game. Despite an unfavorable start to the season in which they lost seven straight games, the Heat ended up playing much better and even fighting for a playoff spot. On March 6, Odom hit a triple-double and had 30 points with 19 rebounds and 11 assists in a home win over the Sacramento Kings. The Heat would pick the fourth seed in the playoffs and face the New Orleans Hornets in the first round. Each team won at home, but the Heat would win a crucial game seventh to advance to the second round and face a top-ranked Indiana Pacers team. The Pacers won their first two games in Indiana, but the Heat responded with back-to-back home wins, including a Game 4 win led by Odom’s 22 points. However, the Pacers’ wealth of experience proved too much for the younger Heat as they claimed Games 5 and 6 to win the series. All in all, Odom had a solid season compared to his previous one with the Clippers.[1]

In his freshman year with the Los Angeles Lakers, Odom suffered a left shoulder injury that forced him to miss the end of the 2004-05 season. Though Odom averaged 15.2 points and a career-high 10.2 rebounds, the Lakers only made the playoffs for the fifth time in franchise history. After the 2004–05 season, they rehired former coach Phil Jackson.
During the first half of the 2005–06 season, Odom showed signs of inconsistency. However, as Los Angeles progressed towards the end of the season, his performance steadily improved. Along the way, he made his first consecutive triple-doubles as a Laker in games against the Golden State Warriors[34] and Portland Trail Blazers[35]. The Lakers were eliminated in 7 games in their first round playoff matchup against the Phoenix Suns after losing a 3-1 lead in the series. In 2008/09, Odom came to the training camp out of shape.[44] Jackson later revealed his plan to bench Odom as the sixth man, supporting the Lakers’ frontcourt consisting of Gasol, Bynum and Trevor Ariza. As a postseason free agent, Odom initially balked at the prospect of playing as a reserve for the first time in his career.[45] But he got on the job soon enough after deciding to sacrifice his own numbers to keep his teammates happy and in hopes of securing his first NBA championship. After Bynum was injured in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies in January, Odom returned to the starting XI. In February, he averaged 16.5 points and 13.4 rebounds while playing 36 minutes a night.[46] That February run included a stellar performance at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. The 15 points Odom scored in the third quarter helped the Lakers turn a 12-point deficit into a 10-point win and end Cleveland’s 23-game home winning streak in the process. Odom finished the game with 28 points, 17 rebounds and 2 assists.[48]
When Bynum returned to the hardwood on April 9 for a home game against the Denver Nuggets, Odom readjusted to his sixth man role.[49] Odom finished the season with 11.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.3 blocks with 29.7 minutes per contest.[1] He won his first NBA championship when the Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic in the 2009 NBA Finals.[46]

On December 11, 2011, Odom was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, the defending NBA champion, for a first-round draft pick and an $8.9 million trade exception after NBA Commissioner David Stern vetoed one had made a proposed three-team trade that would have sent Odom and teammates Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and Goran Dragić from the Houston Rockets to the New Orleans Hornets; Chris Paul to the Lakers; and Pau Gasol to the Houston Rockets.[60][61] Odom felt “disrespected” after publicly learning about the Hornets’ trade, and he requested a trade from the Lakers to another competing team. The Lakers were also concerned that Odom’s contract was expensive as he wasn’t needed to initiate the triangle offense with Mike Brown replacing Phil Jackson as Lakers coach.
