Halyna Hutchins’ Husband Speaks Out on Wife’s Death, Says Alec Baldwin Did Not “Accept Any Responsibility”
Matt Hutchins, the husband of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died in October after she was shot by actor Alec Baldwin with a prop gun bullet on the set of Rust, speaks about his wife’s death in his first public interview.
In a preview of a meeting with Today co-host Hoda Kotb that was scheduled to air in its entirety on Thursday, Hutchins blamed Baldwin for his wife’s death and “industry standards that were not practiced” on set.
During an interview with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos in December, Baldwin gave a detailed timeline of exactly what he claims happened on Oct. 21 and said he was handed a “cold” prop gun. He also explained that Hutchins guided him “how to hold the gun” for camera angle and told him to cock the hammer for a specific shot, but said he didn’t pull the trigger.
“I pulled the hammer back as far as I could without cocking the gun,” Baldwin said. “I release the hammer and bang, the gun goes off.” He later added, “Someone is responsible for what happened and I can’t say who it is, but I know I’m not .”
In addition to the bullet that hit Hutchins, the film’s director, Joel Souza, was also shot in the shoulder.
Matt Hutchins commented on Baldwin’s account, sharing that he “was just so angry” when he saw the actor’s interview. “I was just so angry to see him speak so publicly and in such detail about her death and then take no responsibility after he just described killing her,” he said.
He also noted: “The idea that the person holding the gun that causes the discharge is not responsible is preposterous to me. But gun safety wasn’t the only issue on this set. There have been a number of industry standards that have not been practiced and there are multiple culprits.”

Family attorney Brian Panish claimed at least 15 industry standards were violated on set. The Hutchins family is seeking compensatory and punitive damages of an amount to be determined in court.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.
