William Pullen

Royal Navy officer

Vice-Admiral William John Samuel Pullen (December 4, 1813 – January 22, 1887)[1] was a Royal Navy officer who was the first European to sail along the north coast of Alaska from the Bering Strait to the Mackenzie River in Canada.[citation needed] His Voyage of 1849 was one of the many unsuccessful expeditions to rescue Sir John Franklin and explore the Northwest Passage.

Early life[edit]

Pullen was born in Devonport, Devon, the son of Royal Navy Lieutenant William Pullen and Amelia Mary Haswell. After training at the Greenwich School, he joined the Royal Navy in 1828.[2]

Career [edit]

South Australia[ edit ]

In 1836 Pullen was enticed to leave the Navy and go to South Australia as one of Colonel William Light’s surveyors, arriving in the colony in August 1836. He was engaged in exploring and surveying the mouth of the Murray River and may be credited with discovering Port Adelaide, entering on September 28, 1836, three months before the arrival of the first governor. He also surveyed part of the Lower Murray, Lake Alexandrina and Port Elliot and did much to elucidate the geography of the South Australian coast.[1] Several landmarks in the area bear his name: Pullen Point (tip of the peninsula west of the Murray Estuary) and Pullen’s Island, a small island off Port Elliot.[3] In late July and early August 1840, Pullen led the first expedition down the Coorong to investigate the murders of the survivors of the shipwreck Maria, and took part in Major O’Halloran’s subsequent punitive expedition. It is likely that the town of Goolwa would have been named after him had he not been associated with the summary justice inflicted by that expedition, which also tarnished Governor Gawler’s reputation.[3]

Arctic [ edit ]

Plovers and meetings of HMS and HMS Herald in the Arctic seas of Alaska

He returned to the Navy in 1842 and was stationed on HMS Columbia to survey the Saint John River and Bay of Fundy, being promoted to lieutenant in 1846. In 1845 he married Abigail Louisa Berton in Saint John, New Brunswick. [2] By 1848 it was clear that Franklin had disappeared in the Arctic. Three expeditions were sent out: John Ross (Arctic explorer) through the Parry Channel, the Rae-Richardson Arctic Expedition down the Mackenzie River and one through the Bering Strait. HMS Plover, under Commander Thomas Moore, was sent from England to join Henry Kellett’s Herald, which was already in the Pacific. The Plover was a poor sailor, failed to meet, and wintered in Providence Bay, Siberia, where William Hulme Hooper made ethnographic observations. The Herald gathered supplies in Panama, proceeded to Kamchatka, waited for the Plover at Kotzebue Sound, and returned south on 29 September. The next year, on July 15, 1849, the two ships met at Kotzebue Sound. What happened to them afterwards is not clear from the sources below.

Pullen was returning from a survey of the Bay of Fundy when Bathurst asked him to join the Plover. He took a mail steamer to Panama, crossed the Isthmus, waited a month for the Plover, and then went on the Asia. In May 1849 he joined the Plover in Honolulu. On July 27, after the boats reached Kotzebue Sound, Moore ordered Pullen, 2 officers, 22 men and 4 boats to scout the coast to the Mackenzie River. At Point Barrow the ice was so bad that he sent back the two largest boats. He now had 13 men, two whale boats and an umiak he had bought. On September 2nd he reached the mouth of the Mackenzie River. (Although Frederick William had reached Beechey Point Barrow from the west by ship and then small boat in 1826, and Thomas Simpson from the east by boat and then foot in 1837, Pullen was the first to sail the entire coast of Alaska in one voyage. ) From the estuary he went upstream, leaving most of his exhausted crew at the Hudson’s Bay Company post at Fort McPherson. In early October he reached Fort Simpson, where he met Scottish explorer John Rae. Rae remarked that they were lucky to have had nice weather as they didn’t have proper winter clothing. He was rejoined by his men the next spring and made his way upriver to the York Factory and England. Near Great Slave Lake he encountered a canoe with a message from the Admiralty promoting him to command and ordering him to return and explore Banks Island and Victoria Island. His men volunteered to join him. That summer he sailed downriver and east along the coast in a York boat called the Try Again and a Halkett boat until, near Cape Bathurst, he filled the sea with an impassable mass of jumbled and broken ice. On August 15 he turned back and on his return observed and named Pullen Island and Hooper Island in the Mackenzie Estuary in the Beaufort Sea. He spent the winter of 1850/51 at Fort Simpson. The next spring he joined the York Factory’s regular HBC brigade, reaching London in October 1851.

On his return to England, Pullen learned that he had been promoted to command and in February 1852 he was given command of the depot ship HMS North Star as part of Edward Belcher’s expedition in search of John Franklin. The North Star was placed on Beechey Island over the next few years, eventually being the only surviving ship from the expedition after Belcher ordered the other four ships to be abandoned in the polar ice. They returned to England in October 1854. Pullen Strait, separating Cornwallis Island from Little Cornwallis Island, was named in his honor, while Pullen Point on east Baffin Island was named for Thomas Charles Pullen, Master of the North Star under his brother William.

Later career[edit]

In 1855, as part of the Crimean War’s operations against Russian forces in the Baltic Sea, Pullen was given command of HMS Falcon and was promoted to captain the next year. His subsequent active commands were mainly surveying: the Red Sea and Ceylon with HMS Cyclops and Bermuda with HMS Terror. After several years in the Coast Guard posts, he was retired in 1870 and promoted to rear admiral, then vice admiral. He received a Greenwich pension in 1886 and died in Torquay the next year.
